  • To make the casting mixture, pour the water and casting material directly into a bucket or empty milk jug and stir, shake or knead until the mixture is consistent.
  • The consistency will need to be different, depending on the soil conditions. If the soil is dry, the print detail will probably be fragile. If the soil doesn't have any moisture it won't hold together very well, so the weight of your casting material may crush or damage the track detail. So because of this, you want to make the mix more watery in dry soil.
  • This will make the mixture easier to pour into the fragile track and more likely to fill in small cracks that are usually present with dry soil.
  • If you are unsure of the soil and how consistent to make your mix, your mixture should be on the watery side.

  • The best material for casting tracks is Dental Stone. The second best choice would be "Quik Roc". Other good casting materials are "Ultracal 30" and Hydrocal Gypsum Cement. Plaster of Paris should never be used, as it crumbles and cracks very easily. Although if your only option is Plater of Paris, then use it to get that rare track!
