We are all aware of the discrepancy between expectations and fulfillment in controlling our environment. We track the weather, paths of animals, diseases, pestilence, natural disasters, and space in the hope of learning more about protecting ourselves from whatever may happen next. The main goal of Geographic Information System or GIS as a developing technology is to reduce this discrepancy.

Geographic Information System or GIS, in this context, offers an incredibly useful way to deal with many of the complex decisions required of today's professionals. It has the ability to analyze and manipulate all kinds of data for a variety of purposes, and to study a wide range of implications, such as, if we put the dam there, we shall be able to determine that villages X and Y will be flooded and decide not to put up the dam there.
