Sagpulon Springs and Waterfalls |
Ever been stuck in an out-of-town assignment, with no plans for the weekend? I have, and I woke up in bed one weekend, only to realize I'm far from home, away from my comfort zone. Alone in Cagayan de Oro City, and bored at the mere thought of strolling along Limketkai, I headed to Sagpulon Springs and Waterfalls, which I first saw on the cover of the local telephone directory. Hidden in the pineapple plantation valleys and coconut-covered hills on the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City, Baranggay San Isidro (Municipality of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental) contains one of the most enchanting waterfalls I had ever seen. |

Sagpulon is nestled in the middle of a verdant forest, lush with vegetation. The waterfalls cascade by about 100 feet to an icy but refreshing basin below. Spring water pour out in rivulets from the wall of the sheer cliff. As I gaze up at the blue sky, a lone eagle peacefully glides back and forth on top of the gorge, guarding its beautiful realm. THE WAY: The trailhead, at the main highway going to Jasaan, is an hour's drive away from Cagayan de Oro City. By jeepney, take one going to Agora Market, and then take a connecting jeep going to Jasaan. Remind the driver to drop you off at the trailhead. You can take a motorela (carriages smaller than jeepneys but larger than tricycles) to take you to the waterfalls. But the best way to experience Sagpulon is to hike into it (for about one and a half-hours) on a dusty 6-kilometer road that will take you through a scenic countryside. At one point, you will see streams flowing on both sides of the road. How idyllic! |
