SLEEPING GIANT. The crater lake of Mt. Pinatubo
|
In 1991, Mt. Pinatubo surprised the world when it unleashed its fury, in what would be become one of the worst natural disasters in world history. Considered as a sacred mountain by the native Aetas who used to dwell on its slopes, Mt. Pinatubo spewed tons of volcanic debris. The ashfall travelled across continents , and until now, the surrounding provinces of Pampanga, Zambales and Tarlac are denuded by lahar flows, virtually changing the landscape. Today, the threat of lahar has diminished. An artificial breach was created to let out some water and thus, prevent the water from the crater lake from reaching critical levels. Mount Pinatubo has become a tourist attraction. Its landscape is still forever changing. The pictures below will show you my trek to Pinatubo last January 29-30, 2000, on a Friendship Climb sponsored by Pilipinas Sierra which was participated by about 200 people. |
