The househould before John R. Mitchell's, there is a James D. Mitchell, age 55, could he be a son we've missed? The earliest census I have for James and Lucinda Mitchell is the 1850 census.
The oldest son at that time is John R. Mitchell age 18 but they had at least one daughter, Sarah A. Mitchell born in 1824....there is room between Sarah and John R. for another child...What do you think?

I see that this James D. Mitchell age 55, was married to a Caroline and she was born in NC, this is probably Alvin's parents, the nephew living with John R. Mitchell.

James D. Mitchell was also born in VA and both parents were born in VA.

Subject: James A. MITCHELL in VA

Hi Joe, I started searching the earlier census in Halifax Co, Va for 1820-1840. That Keating/Mitchell book states that our Mitchell's came from that area and that it was possible for James A. Mitchell to be the son of Benjamin Mitchell.

I found James A. Mitchell on the 1830 and 1840 census. On the 1840 I found one in North District, Halifax Co, VA, Benjamin Mitchell was listed on the same page. They had them grouped by
the letter of their last name so all M's were in one grouping so it's hard to tell if they were neighbor's.

Anyway look at 1840:

3 males under age 5
George W.
Thomas J.
Francis

2 males 5 to under 10
William T.
John R.

1 male 10 to under 15
could this be James D. ?

then they had one male 30-40 - we have that James A. Mitchell would have been born about 1792, so in that case he would have been 48....all the census I've seen in VA show him to be 10 years younger than what they show in TN.

But then check out the daughters:

1 female 5 to under 10
??? not sure on this one - I saw a Martha Mitchell living near them in Carroll Co. - she married Isaac Barker - says she was born in TN...so this may not be her...

2 females ages 10 to under 15
Sarah Ann
Lucinda

1 female 30 to under 40
Lucinda Petty Mitchell.

This same family was also listed in the same county in 1830 - kid's still match and again shows James A. Mitchell 10 years younger than what we have in TN - Benjamin Mitchell still in the area

In 1820, only Benjamin Mitchell shows up - at that time he had a son age 10-16 which again would show James A. Mitchell 10 years younger and a daughter 10-16 years old...remember me telling you that I have this feeling that Nancy Mitchell Throgmorton could be his sister - she would have been 15 years old in 1820.

James Petty is also on the 1820 census, same area as Benjamin Mitchell, he has one daughter age 10 to under 16 which would fit Lucinda.

In 1840 I have Richard Throckmorton, in Halifax Co, North District (same area where James A. and Benjamin Mitchell are) This is my Richard that married Nancy Mitchell.

Alot of if's and maybe's...but all are good possibilities.

You thought the James A. Mitchell in 1880 could be the other James A. Mitchell. I remember hearing that he had gone back to VA and died there - also I checked on the net last night, James A. Mitchell's wife Sarah Phillpot was born in MD I believe. So their children should show up as the mom being born in MD and not VA.

James D. and John R. Mitchell show both their parents being born in VA. I still think that is our James A. Mitchell - I know the age is off by 10 years in the VA census but I have done searches just in VA and this is the closest I've come to matching his children.

Subject: NC Mitchell's

Hi Joe, Guess where I found James D. Mitchell in 1860? In Benton
County, TN.

Guess who is neighbor was at that time? William and Sarah Mitchell of NC....guess who their daughter is? Minerva Mitchell, WIFE of Francis Mitchell. They were married in 1867 in Benton Co. TN.

So is there a connection between the NC and the VA Mitchell's???

This is the census info on Minerva's parents:

1850 Census Benton Co., TN, handwritten page 96:
Mitchell, Wm./43/farmer/NC
Mitchell, Sarah/57/NC
Mitchell, James/17/NC
Mitchell, Robert/15/NC
Mitchell, Parker/13/male/NC
Mitchell, Mary/11/NC
Mitchell, Caroline/10/NC
Mitchell, Malissa/8/NC
Mitchell, Louisa/6/NC
Mitchell, Henry/4/NC
Mitchell, William/3/NC
Mitchell, Manerva/1/TN
*******************
1860 Census, Benton Co., TN, District 3, Camden P.O, handwritten
page 47:
Mitchel, William/54/male/farmer/NC
Mitchel, Sara/46/NC
Mitchel, Melissa/18/NC
Mitchel, Louisa/16/NC
Mitchel, Minervy/11/TN
Mitchel, Wingfield/13/TN
Mitchel, John/9/TN
Mitchel, Catherine/4/TN
Mitchel, George/3/TN

In 1860, the next household is:

J.D. Mitchell age 33 male farmer, personal value $100 and pob VA
Caroline age 20 female pob NC
Calvin age 2 male pob Tennessee...

Do you see what I see? I bet J.D. Mitchell married Caroline Mitchell, daughter of William and Sarah! She's 10 in the 1850 census.

In 1880 James D. and Caroline are still married and living in Carroll County. Remember the 1880 census I sent you on John R. Mitchell where his father James Mitchell is living with him...remember ALVIN L. Mitchell, age 21 who is listed as a NEPHEW....That's CALVIN!!!!!!

I guess I'll look in 1870 and see what else I find in Benton County.

So I would say that Minerva and sister Caroline Mitchell (Minerva) was born in TN and Caroline in NC) married brothers - James D. Mitchell and Francis Mitchell and James D. Mitchell's son is living with his brother John R. Mitchell...I think we have a missing son here.

Subject: Mitchell marriages

I've been finding some marriage records that piece together a few more things for us:

LDS-IGI Marriage info:
LUCINDA MITCHEL Female Spouse: ELCONY PAFFORD
Event(s): Marriage: 05 JUL 1857, Benton, Tennessee
Source Information: Batch No.: M519021 Dates: 1838 - 1873
Source Call No.: 0557642 Type: Film

I see where you had Henry Francis Stout as her husband but on the LDS that was just a file someone submitted -this record above is an actual transcription of the marriage records.

I found a marriage of James Daniel Mitchell to Caroline Elizabeth Mitchell in Benton Co, TN...this was in 1857. It doesn't have an actual transcription, just someone's submitted file - I think this is correct though because I've seen the census recrord in 1860 and it shows them living next to her parents - later they are in Weakley County. Also - this record shows that James Daniel Mitchell died in 1890. Have not confirmed this finding. There is an earlier marriage to Mary Maxter - I found them on the
census - no children at that time.
**********

F. M. MITCHELL Male Spouse: MARY E. MITCHELL
Event(s): Marriage: 10 FEB 1867, Benton, Tennessee
Source Information: Batch No.: M519021 Dates: 1838 - 1873
Source Call No.: 0557642 Type: Film

This is Francis Marion Mitchell and Manirva E. Mitchell

I think this is our Lucinda - Nathan and William's sister. She would be the THIRD sibling to have married in Benton Co, TN - why where they there???? Later she in 1880 she is living in MO. - I
checked the 1880 census and she is there, born in VA, parents born in VA. I'm sure this is her.
*************
Next:

L. W. BARLOW Female Spouse: E. M. ELLSBERRY Event(s): Marriage: 13 JUL 1864, Carroll, Tennessee Source Information: Batch No.: M519075 Dates: 1861 - 1873 Source Call No.: 0944055 Type: Film

This is Lucretia W. Barlow, daughter of John H. Barlow - she would have been Robert Barlow's sister - Lula's aunt. I knew it had to be her...I have more census info I can send later if you
are interested.

I found a marriage for John H. Barlow in 1864 as well - he married a Mary Scoby. Probably didn't want to be alone - Lucretia was the last one to marry and move out.
*************
And this last marriage - I believe this is my William Mitchell:

WM. MITCHELL Male Spouse: SUSAN THOGMARTIN
Event(s): Marriage: 18 MAR 1856, Carroll, Tennessee

Source Information: Batch No.: M519071 Dates: 1838 - 1860
Source Call No.: 0944055

I believe this because he didn't marry Mary Angeline Morris til 1868 - he should have married sooner than that. AND I think that he had at least one child from his first marriage:

I think this is William and his wife Mary in 1870 with his father James Mitchell.

From the 1870 Federal Census, Dist. #3, McKenzie Post Office,
Carroll Co., Tennessee, page 10, house #68, census done on 12 July 1870 (need to confirm this is the correct William and James Mitchell - looks like a very probable match)
Mitchell, William 40 M W Farm pob Virginia
Jane 30 F W keeping house pob Tennessee
Salina 12 F W pob Tennessee
Charles 1 M W pob Tennessee
James 70 M W pob Virginia

I just have to find William Mitchell in 1860 on the Carroll County census. In 1850 he's living with James...1860 haven't found, 1870 and 1880 he's on the census, 1890 is missing - 1900 he's dead by then.

MO. She md James R. Keating 26 Nov 1846 in TN. He was born 1827 in Carroll Co, McKenzie,
TN, and died Abt. 1855 in MO. From Kathy Clark;

Sarah Keating lived on for several years. It is tradition in our family that she became very old for the time and was remembered as the oldest person in the community. My grandmother Young always said that Grandma Sally died at the age of 79. That would put her death at circa 1903. She was born in Halifax County, Virginia in 1824. Her family headed west but stopped in Carroll County, Tennessee in about 1845. Sally was three years older than James.

Sally Keaton, as she pronounced the name, was nearly blind at her death and was said to smoke a little pipe. She was known as an excellent story teller and was on call for that purpose most of the time. She often told her grandchildren stories of life in early Virginia and of the Civil War. We do know that the Mitchell family was a land owning family in Tennessee as well as Virginia.

Notes for James R. Keating:
From the book "The Keating/Mitchell Family and Related Lines" by Luna Young Girvin and Jerry Young, published 1990 - copy in my possesion.

James R. Keating was born in Carroll County, Tennessee, in 1827. On 26 November 1846, he married Miss Sarah A. Mitchell, the daughter of James and Lucinda Petty Mitchell of Carroll County, formerly of Halifax County, Virginia. James R. and Sarah are known to have had six children. There is a big gap of nine years between records of their second and third children so it is probable that there were other children between who died young. Five of their children were born in Tennessee before 1865, and only the youngest, Annie, was born in Missouri. Annie also is thought to have died young.

James and Sarah owned land in Tennessee. It would seem that they sold their land or at least most of it in 1861 and remained in Carroll County for three more years before they followed James's brother Nicholas to Stoddard County, Missouri. We know that William J. was born in Tennessee in 1864 and Annie in Missouri in
1865.

James and Sarah Keating lived next door to their daughter Lydia Pirtle in 1870 according to the census. The family lived very poorly in Missouri.

It is my guess that James died in Stoddard County circa 1885. There is no record of death during that period for him although that county was keeping records at the time

Children of Sarah Mitchell and James Keating are: 13 i. William J.3 Keating, born 1864 in TN. 14 ii. Annie Keating, born 1865 in Stoddard Co, MO. 3. James Daniel2 Mitchell (James Allen1) was born Abt. 1827 in VA, and died 1890. He md (1)
Mary Baxter Dec 1849. He md (2) Caroline Elizabeth Mitchell 1857 in Benton Co, TN, daughter
of William Mitchell and Sara Ross. She was born May 1841 in NC. This from Kathy Clark about the 1880 Weakley County Census:

Notes for Margaret Lee Tate:
Margaret married Joe in 1962. Since he was playing in a band on weekends
she would go along and with her sister Joyce sing a few songs at each
performance. She later learned to play the keyboards on her own just from
having a natural ear for music. Shortly thereafter she became a regular
member of the band. In 1967 they made a record album featuring her on
vocals and keyboard. Around this time she began to be known as "Maggie
Lee", from Joe giving her the nickname Maggie when he met her and taking
her middle name Lee. Due to her popularity the band which had been called
the Percussion's the band became "Maggie Lee and The Percussions". This
album came to the attention of Sam Phillips who was the founder of Sun
Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Sam gave the start to Elvis Presley, Jerry
Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Bill Justis, Carl Perkins, Carl Mann and others.
Mr. Phillips was a large stockholder in the Holiday Inn Corporation and
arranged through their talent agency to book Maggie and the group to a 3
week engagement at the military base in Thule Greenland, the northernmost
post in the world. The group made such a hit they were held over an
additional 3 weeks at Thule and then another 3 weeks at Sondestrom
Greenland. This began the traveling of the group to 21 states and 3
foreign countries over a period of 4 years.

Becoming tired of the rigors of traveling Maggie and Joe decided to try to
stay locally in the West Tennessee area. In 1973 they purchased a Night
Club called the "Kings Den". They renamed it "Maggie Lee's" and operated
this club from 1973 until they retired in 1991. Maggie was the main
attraction at this club during this entire period.
