[Question provided by Lea]
Paul Leyden: Well when I first got the sides from my agent in Australia, the role at the time was called "Dylan." The scene at the time was when he was going to see Lily and it was after the Atlantic City thing and he kisses her, and he's like, "I felt something, you felt something, don't fight it," and then they kiss. It was a lot earlier getting those two together than it was on the air. But the name was Dylan, and I thought it was Dylan right up until I got to New York. My first day on the set I got "Simon Frasier."
Chelsea: Hey Paul! Do you want Simon and Katie to have a baby on the show anytime soon?
Leyden: <laughs> Well, apparently to have a baby, you gotta have sex, right? And I think they're having a lot of sex offscreen. They're gettin' it on all the time offscreen. But onscreen, there ain't a huge amount happenin'. So unless there's an immaculate conception or divine intervention& It'd be fun, but I don't think it's gonna happen. I think the writers are too obsessed with that rabbit.
Cheryl: Hi Paul I'm so happy and excited to get this chance to talk with you online. You are an amazing actor. I love the ad-libs you throw in on ATWT whenever possible. All of those moments are truly priceless. :-) Here's my question. If ATWT was ever moved to HBO and had the opportunity to loosen its boundaries like Sex and the City, Oz, and The Sopranos, what would you like to see happen with Katie and Simon?
Leyden: That's a good question, Cheryl. Well, trust me, Simon and Katie as portrayed by the actors are both potty-mouths. If any of our language could get onscreen, that'd be pretty cool, because both of us can swear like soldiers. And Kim Cattrall <http://us.imdb.com/Name?Cattrall,%20Kim> gets herself into some pretty interesting situations on Sex and the City, I'd like to see Katie and Simon get into some of those situations, too. I think they oughta put a swing in the cottage, too. Not like a playground swing, one of those leather varieties.
Deedle: Hi Paul! I remember reading that you are also a writer. Can we look forward to seeing any of your work soon? I'm lifting my martini (made with Bombay Sapphire Gin in honor of Henry, of course) to your portrayal of Donovan. Hope we haven't seen the last of him!
Leyden: I write prolifically, I've got four features sitting upstairs on my desk, I've got about five short films I finished recently. It's one of my hobbies, it's as much of a passion to me as acting. At the moment I'm about to work with Artie (Terri's husband, Arthur Colombino) to shoot a couple of short films for some festivals, and I'm going to try to raise some of the funds over the next few years to shoot one of the features. As for Donovan, I don't know if we've seen the last of him or not ... but if he does come back again, I think he'll be nastier than ever and smoke more. If that's possible!
Deni: What will you and Terri be doing for Soaps Alive in Atlantic City?
Leyden: I'm not sure as yet ... Maybe they'll just whack me on a blackjack table and people will just come and fund my dirty gambling habit. But apart from that, I think we have a lunch.
Donna: Hi, Paul. Wanted to say that I love you and Terri on the show and I so hope you do not leave anytime soon! My question is silly but wondering ... Do you have a private dressing room at the studio or do you share, if so with whom? Besides Terri and Martha, who are your friends from the show? Do you hang out with anyone else from the show?
Leyden: Yes, we have our own private dressing rooms. I think that mine is the most undecorated out of every person there. Whatever I bring that day I walk out with. Whereas a lot of people have candles, aromatherapy, clean sheets ... I've got the same skanky blanket that I've had since I moved into the room. I travel light that way. Terri and Martha are definitely my closest friends not only on the show, but also in real life. Apart from them, I get along with everyone. I have great little conversations with Hunt, which are always rewarding. He's a really terrific, smart, funny, witty guy. Outside of the show, I don't really see too many other people. Most of my close friends are outside of the ATWT family.
Leisa: Paul can we come and decorate?
Leyden: As long as it doesn't involve potpourri, decorating is most welcome.
EJ: Ok, well let me just say how much I loved today's show. My question Paul is what has been your favorite KnS storyline so far and what do you like most about living in America?
Leyden: Honestly, my favorite KnS storyline has been working with Terri overall. Whatever we do I just love working with her. However, some storylines can be frustrating because sometimes we feel we can be underutilized. If I had to pick a favorite day of shooting, it's the Malta Opera house basement. It involved a really interesting dynamic between the two characters. That and when they first got married and the James Bond fantasy scenes. What do I like most about America? The Americans!! And every single person in this chat room.
Frances: I am loving the interaction with so many cast members. Is there still someone on the show you would like to work with and haven't?
Leyden: I love working with the usual suspects I'm generally in scenes with like Terri, Martha, Trent, and Liz Hubbard, that always makes for a great day. And I would love to do more scenes with Hunt, Benjamin Hendrikson and Ellen Dolan.
Guest2: Well, my question was about how much Paul liked working with Trent because I loved the two of them together, but I think he answered that already. You two just look like you are about to crack up in your scenes together.
Leyden: Yeah, definitely. I love working with Trent because we both like to play within the scene. We like to give it a different energy than is on the page; we amuse ourselves. And if we amuse ourselves, hopefully the audience finds it interesting.
Guest4: Keep up the great work Paul!
Leyden: Thanks, Guest4! I'll try.
Irishsis79: Thanks for chatting with us Paul& Has Jack and Carly's wedding been shot yet? Are Katie and Simon going to be there? Is everyone in costume? Also, are Katie and Simon going to be honouring Halloween this year?
Leyden: We shot that today, yesterday, the day before, and I think tomorrow ... but I'm not working tomorrow. It's one of those frustrating days where it's long, and you're there for two lines& and in the meantime me and Terri get in trouble because we're off pulling focus on the side. And crazy Julia came back to ruin the whole extravaganza. It's always great to have Annie back ... she is awesome. Not so much costume, I guess the wardrobe budget got blown on fancy duds they must've hired ... so it's very formal. In other words, all the chicks look great, and all the guys get shoved in suits that fit. (Re: Honoring H'ween): In a very small way ... and I'm not talking about what's in Simon's trousers.
Jan: What are our aspirations as an actor and/or a writer and where would you like your career to take you? Of course we'd love to see you stay on ATWT, but you're such an awesome actor I can see you moving on to bigger and better things.
Leyden: Ultimately as an actor, I want stuff that challenges me every single day ... wherever that is, whatever great scripts are out there, whatever I'm right for as an actor. Whether that's in Australia or America or doing street theatre with pygmies in the heart of the Peruvian jungle. Maybe in five or ten years I might not even be acting, I might just want to write or direct my own stuff.
JenniferH: Paul, did you ever watch American Idol? And please don't dis Justin [Guarini, American Idol Finalist], or we'll have to hurt you!
Leyden: I'm sorry but I do have to dis him. The guy looks like Sideshow Bob from "The Simpsons." He's the cheesiest person to ever grace American television.
JenniferH: Oh, I'm so taking you down.
(Malynda, in background:) What do you think of Kelly?
Leyden: Kelly's a great singer ... but she's gotta get a stylist.
[Argument between Paul and Jennifer-still stuck on Justin-ensues.]
Kavi: I have the feeling she may be yelling at him right now.
JenniferH: Yes, I yelled at him.
Judy: It seems in soaps writers feel couples have to have conflict in a relationship to be interesting, yet Katie and Simon are very happy together and remain a lot of fun to watch. Any ideas why it works for them and not others? Is it just a different attitude from the writers or do you and Terri have input? And I agree you and both underutilized and not allowed to show enough range.
Leyden: I think the reason why Simon and Katie get along really well is that deep down in their hearts they're both huge Justin Guarini fans. That moppet head alone changed them. No, seriously, I don't think the audience would believe a huge amount of conflict between them. They've got nothing to be in conflict about. They honestly and sincerely get along, they respect each others' opinions, and they each care how the other feels. Which is why the Dahlia storyline might not have worked. They trust each other already. It didn't make sense; the two of them rise above it very quickly.
Kathy: Hi Paul! It's great to talk to you. Just have to tell you that I love ya' and that smile of yours! My question is: Are you surprised at how popular the love story of Katie and Simon has become and why do you think their particular love story has struck such a chord with so many fans? Oh yeah, BTW, Paul, will you marry me? LOL!
Leyden: I think because they started out as friends who needed each other and the feelings developed quite quickly, that it was a relationship that was more like real life, where you really like someone but you don't want to express it because you think it's going to change the core of the relaitionship. So that when they got together, they knew each other very well, on kind of a deeper level. And yes, I will marry you, if you can keep me in the lifestyle that I'm accustomed to.
Kavi: How exactly does one go from a degree in econ to NIDA (The National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney& that is Drama school)
Leyden: Just by realizing what I didn't want to do, which was wear a suit every day, a tie, sit behind a desk& The whole time I was working at Price-Waterhouse, I basically just sat at the computer and pretended to work while I wrote little short films all day. I had a really great secretary who would tell that I was at a client's, while I was at the cinema.
Kavi: I've always wondered ... my econ class makes me want to put a pencil thru my eye!
Leyden: Well, I did. That's what no one really knows, I have one glass eye.
Kayla: Hey Paul!! Well I'm 16 years old and I met you at the luncheon this year (my 1st time to New York!!), and I just wanted to know how you feel about meeting the younger fans like me! PS: YOU ROCK MY SOCKS =P
Leyden: Meeting younger fans is great, because it shows that the audience is quite diverse.
Lala: Hi Paul ... first of all I just want to make a comment on behalf of Lea who wanted to be here but had a class& she just wanted to say that she loves the character of Simon and Frasier and loved watching you as Donovan ... oh also she has a crush on you. (Meh ... who doesn't?) Ok on to me ... I think you're totally awesome Paul (and not too hard on the eyes) ... what's your fav KnS moment?
Leyden: Probably the one I mentioned before. (Opera house basement.)
Igreen61: Hi Paul. Being that you're from Australia, does Paul the person live on the wild side as your character Simon?
Leyden: I think Paul the person makes Simon look like a bit of a wuss. Simon the character and me as a person are very different. Our need for adventure and challenge are quite similar though.
Leisa: Hey Paul. This is such a pleasure!! You and Terri are the ONLY reason I am watching daytime. You both are just terrific together! I live in Tennessee. Have you had the chance to visit the southern part of the US yet? If not, come on down ... we would love the chance to show you some "Southern Hospitality"! O.K. to my question ... Simon I can't ask what I "really" want to know, I will stick with a safe one. Is there any actor or actress on another daytime drama that Paul and or Terri would like the chance to work with on their show?
Leyden: I have been to Memphis. My first public appearance in this country was in Memphis, I loved going to Graceland ... and going up the main street, it was around Halloween, and the main street was closed down ... it was a blast. (Regarding other actors) Honestly? I have never watched another one of the other shows so I couldn't tell you ... I rarely catch our show!
Nikki: Hi Paul! If you could play any other character on ATWT which role would you want?
Leyden: It'd be Snickers. 'Cause Snickers gets paid to get felt up, and sit in a cage, and force-fed carrots. If I had to pick a dream role, out of any movie/TV, that is it. To be felt up and force-fed carrots.
Nona: Hey Paul- Simon has a great wardrobe of shirts and jeans. Are they designers and do you have any say about what to wear? Thanks- Jean
Leyden: Sometimes we have say in what we wear. Overall I like what Simon wears except when they put him in brightly colored clothing which clashes with the character a bit.
Sheri: My name is Sheri and my sister, Kelly, and I want to thank you so much for coming to Meridan, Connecticut on September 21st. (We know you had something better to do that day!) It was so great to meet you and talk to you about the show. Here's our question. Do you have any guilty pleasures? (No, we're not being fresh.) Anything you would be embarrassed for others to know?
Leyden: Most of my guilty pleasures probably aren't suitable for spilling on a PG site if you know what I mean. And it was great to meet you guys-I do remember, and it was really lovely to talk to you.
Sporty_Chicken: Hi Paul ... just wanted to say you rock. If you could change one thing about your character what would it be?
Leyden: If I could change one thing about him ... well, to begin with, I would need to change more than one thing, because over the time that I have played this character on the show, I am completely at the mercy of the writers. And along with the great writing and story directions that they have given Simon, there have been other times that have changed this character almost overnight. You become loyal to how you play that character and when you get writing that changes that, it becomes difficult to know where that character stands anymore.
Theresa: Okay my question is unrelated to ATWT, but here goes, I am going to Sydney for vacation next year and I want to know the one sight I should not miss seeing?
Leyden: Well my favorite thing to do in Sydney, which I used to do every single day, was the Bondi to Bronte walk along the ocean. You start at a great surf beach and run to Bronte along the clifftops and finish with breakfast at my favorite café. Just saying all this is making me very homesick and very nostalgic. Have a great time.
Kayla1: What has been the most exciting thing that you've been able to do because you've had this job on ATWT that you wouldn't have been able to do otherwise?
Leyden: The most exciting thing, and one of the reasons I took the job in the first place-I had a great job offer back home-was the opportunity to live in New York City. The opportunity to live in one of the greatest cities in the world for three years or so is just awesome. And that experience alone is one that I wouldn't trade for anything.
Leyden: To all of you guys, thank you so, so much for all your ongoing and unrelenting support. The fact that you guys hang in there through thick and thin means a lot to me and Terri. Even the things like voting in the polls means so much to us. You all rock!

Go To Top

Some Fans Confuse the Actor and the Character (Soaps in Depth, July 30, 2002)

Together, Terri Colombino (Katie) and Paul Leyden (Simon) can recall mailed missives which took issue with Simon's taste in women. "I've had lots of letters calling Katie a snake in the grass," shares Leyden, who then as an aside to his leading lady, "I never showed you those letters. This guy wrote me every week for months."
"Oh, I know who he is," responds Colombino. "He used to write me all the time. Sometimes he was a 'woman,' sometimes a man. Thanks to recent slip-ups, they've been able to discover the identity of Nick's murderer (in the closing credits), and that the character who looked like Simon was, in fact, "Faux Simon," as he was identified on the closed captioning on June 21. And that's a plot point that wasn't technically revealed until this week.
How did this happen? "As The World Turns is done in what we call 'live display,' so the script is prepared beforehand, but is sent out live," explains Laura Doty, marketing manager for VITAC, the company that provides the captions for ATWT, Days of Our Lives, Young and the Restless and Bold and the Beautiful. "In those cases, things can change when the script is done, like some of the minor details."
Unlike on Days, where captioners actually watch a tape of the show beforehand, says Doty, "We get a script from As The World Turns. We'll put speaker Ids and things that captioning requires. Sometimes things are edited here, but often we keep what they have given us. So, if the script said 'Faux Simon,' then that's what goes on-screen, just as when an actor ad libs, it's not likely to show up on captioning.
What is the response to all of this from ATWT's production company, Procter & Gamble? "Oops," chuckles a spokesperson.
Go To Top

Katie and Simon Face Trouble in Paradise (Soaps in Depth, July 16, 2002)

After surviving Dahlia's murderous machinations, As the World Turns' Frasiers seem to have gone from the frying pan straight into the fire with this latest adventure on the island of Avanya. "Well, Simon's the international man of mystery," sighs Terri Colombino (Katie), "and Katie's not too happy about it. They just got happy again, and she wants to settle down a bit, fix up their new place and just be happy. And he's just not that kind of guy." When Katie was stranded on an island before, it led Simon to admit his feelings for her. And their adventure in Malta only brought the couple closer together. But will this tropical paradise be the death of them? "Oh God," Colombino groans, smiling. "We started writing a story to get Rose off the canvas (Martha Bryne is pregnant), and it became something else. The Simon and Katie story [with Dahlia] was ending, and I didn't have anything for them this summer."
Enter faux Simon. "Paul Leyden gets to do a dual role and have some fun with it," adds Sheffer.
"The character is very different from Simon," asserts Leyden. "He's obviously trying to get the diamond, and he won't let anything stand in his way. Fake Simon is fun. He's able to do awful things with a smile on his face. He's a sociopath. He's loud. He's obnoxious. He he's sexist. He smokes. He drinks."
But he can't fool Katie, who realizes this week that the man she is kissing his not her husband. "They all think he's Simon, but Katie quickly discovers he's not," Leyden previews. "He thinks that because he looks like Simon he s going to get away with it. The fact that he doesn t sound like him or act like him is going to pose a problem."
Leyden got tips from co-start Byrne on playing a dual role. "Now I know what Martha has been going through," he sighs. "Whatever character you do first, always remember what you did on what line, because that's what you're going to be reacting to later on." Follow? "And you've got to keep it fairly simple. You can't be gesturing too much, because you're not going to remember that later. For some reason, for Simon's stories, the setup seems to be so long. The fact that Dahlia is missing is an interesting plot point as it unfolds. It does bring up the whole idea of trust in a relationship. How far will you trust someone? And it's a good question to consider when you remember Simon s past. I'm trying to play both (did or didn't Simon kill Monique, Dahlia's sister). I like, too, that this story is allowing Simon to get more of his edge back-he needs it. Simon lost his edge back in the early days.
And if truth were known, Simon is the absolute opposite of me in so many ways. I have a funny and sick sense of humor and I make people laugh all the time on and off the set."

Go To Top

Holding Out Hope (Soap Opera Digest, May 07, 2002)

It's hard to say exactly where things went wrong, or even to admit that anything has gone awry with Katie and Simon. We've done nothing but gush about the charming, quirky, sexy couple since they were basically a twinkle in Head Writer Hogan Sheffer's eye. Obviously, they couldn't be happy forever. And it makes sense that Katie, despite her obsession with Simon, never got the whole story on his life. It also stands to reason that his past would be murky and might even include murder.
The problems began with Dahlia, and Katie's Butt-Busting Workout. Put aside the implausibility of "Katie's suddenly famous!" and you still have the overused mystery-woman-plants-doubts-in- gullible-wife's-head plot. While we adore actors Terri Colombino (Katie) and Paul Leyden (Simon), who have proven that they can make the best of a banal situation, wouldn't it have been convincing if Katie had rekindler her journalism career and stumbled upon the incriminating evidence herself? Or if Simon had, in the two years he's been town, displayed any sort of real temper until recently?
Of course, Dahlia had an agenda. Of course, it involved one of Simon's ex-wives. Of course, Simon is really the victim. Of course, we also shouldn't jump to conclusions. He claims that that simply isn t the case, and we re inclined to believe him. His better half should trust him, too, because while he s a reluctant hero, he s a hero all the same. Check it out &
1) Simon refused to let Lily die.
While on the run from Simon s twisted sister, Celia, Lily fell ill, and he remained by her side to nurse her back to health. And when they later were stranded on a desert island, he kept them alive until they could be rescued.
2) Simon supported Katie when he believed she was pregnant.
Even though it was just a scheme to make sure he didn t run back to Lily, Simon proved his loyalty to his new bride by accepting his unlikely role as a father. And even when her lie was revealed, Simon still stuck around.
3) Simon traveled to Italy to help Lily rescue Holden and Luke.
Although a suspicious Katie followed him all the way to Malta, she needn t have worried, because her husband was too busy risking his life to reheat his old flame.
4) Simon saved Katie from the island.
When her harebrained scheme left Katie stranded with her partner in crime Henry and sex-crazed hermit Cooley, Simon flew to her aid. Luckily, the plane had only two seats, so the Frasiers rode into the sunset together, leaving the misfits behind.
5) Katie s no saint herself!
When she wasn t scheming to win Holden from Lily, Katie was busy poisoning Molly to steal the WOAK anchor chair. Most of her family still doesn t trust her as far as they can throw her, so Mrs. Frasier should cut her mate a little more slack.

Go To Top

Did Katie Marry a Murderer? But this week, just as Simon is struggling to regain his wife s trust, Katie learns that he still may not be telling her the whole truth. What else is he keeping from her?
Although Katie accepted Simon s explanation that the murder charges had been dropped due to insufficient evidence, she s still puzzled by Dahlia s attempts to come between them. Simon insists he has no idea, but a suspicious Katie decides to spend the night at Craig s.
Determined, Simon asks Margo to run a check on Dahlia and immediately goes to Katie with the truth: Dahlia is his late wife s sister! Simon assumes that she must hold him responsible for Monique s accident. While Katie agrees to confront Dahlia, she wstill refuses to go home with her husband.
Later the Frasiers approach Dahlia, who insists she s trying to save Katie s life. The exercise tape was meant to raise enough money for Katie to be independent, and Dahlia goes so far as to offer to step away from the project or anything else Katie wishes, just so long as she leaves Simon.
When Katie dismisses the idea that she s in danger, Dahlia drops another bombshell. The oft-married man shrugged off the benign calls with little, if no, concern& that is, until Dahlia provided town folk with much deadlier ammunition. According to Dahlia, Simon is not only a gigolo, he is the murderer of her sister Monique!
Pause for Thought
Although never officially charged with the death of his ex-wife, Dahlia s knowledge of Simon s previous antics raise many an eyebrow, including Katie s. These new, horrific accusations, vehemently denied by Simon, are worrisome to Katie, who is beginning to believe that her true beloved could actually be a true deathtrap intent on swallowing her up whole. Simon s situation deteriorates even further when Katie steps out of their one-room bedroom and into Craig s luxurious suite to take time to weed out the seeds of doubt Dahlia managed to plant in her head.
Turn of Events
The Frasiers are discouraged, yet resilient, which proves to be a necessary asset in the battle that faces them. Simon s background check identifies Dahlia as Monique s embittered sister. She has never completely recovered from her sibling s loss and holds Simon accountable for Monique s untimely death. Simon and Katie confront Dahlia, but Simon s plan to exonerate himself backfires when Dahlia protests that her only intent is to save, not harm, Katie. She proceeds to inform the young bride that a legal technicality is the only reason that Simon didn t lose his freedom. When Simon attempts to elaborate, Dahlia rants Simon got away with murder! Katie s thinking grows increasingly more negative when, during Dahlia s mimic of Simon s seduction dance, she recognizes many a familiar move.
Doubting Katie
A livid Simon throws Dahlia out of their home. All the while, she taunts: What are you going to do? Kill me? When Simon asks if Katie believes in his innocence, she stalls. On the evening of the cocktail party for the release of Katie s video Butt-Bustin Work Out, Dahlia delivers a direct threat, for which Simon demands a direct answer from his beloved bride: Does she believe in his innocence or not?

Go To Top

The Newlywed Game (Soap Opera Digest, April 02, 2002)
We challenge ATWT's Terri Colombino and Paul Leyden to a relationship test, '70s-TV style.

Technically, Katie and Simon's marriage began more than a year ago in a quickie, green-card ceremony at the courthouse. I don t know how he continues to play straight man to her, but he does. I think they re a great couple. We have a long story.
Digest: It s harder once they re finally together, though. Sheffer: this is the dilemma of the head writer. Carly, as a character, is fantastic. I love Maura West; all my writers love writing for her. I never want her to be with anyone. Because the whole thing with Carly is her being caught between two men. If you settle her in Milltown with Jack and they re holding hands and watching TV, I don t know what that is. I don t want to make her happy. Terri is great happy that s the kind of story she generates.
Read The Entire Hogan Sheffer Interview.

Go To Top

Love and Marriage (Soap Opera Update, January 29, 2002)

Love was bursting out all over on the soaps this year as wedding and proposals filled our screens. But it wasn't until the two came to accept that Holden and Lily were never going to leave each other for another that their rendezvous kicked into full gear. Why dwell on your fifth divorce when you can recall your first wedding night, right? When we asked the readers of Soaps in Depth to visit our Website and vote for the happy occasion which left them crying tears of joy, we couldn't help but smile at your enthusiasm.
October 2001, Once More With Feeling
Desperate to reunite with the woman he finally was able to admit to loving, Simon searched heaven (or a convent, at least) and hell for Katie, only to discover that she'd wound up sticking close to home. In fact, the runaway bride wound up trading God's sisters for her own sib by hiding out in Margo's attic! At long last, Simon found his wife and declared his life.
"Say it again," Katie begged, thrilled that her husband had come to realize what she'd known from the beginning: that they were destined to be together. Although brutish Bruno threw a temporary wrench into the festivities by swinging in and making off with the object of his infatuation, Simon used guerilla warfare tactics by threatening bodily harm if his rival didn't knock off the cavement routine. In the end, true love won the day as Simon gave up fighting his feelings and surrendered his heart.

Go To Top

"A Second Chance" (Soaps in Depth, January 29, 2002)
AnUnlikely Duo Says, "I Do!" Once More, With Feeling

It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience. Simon needed a green card, and lovestruck Katie was more than happy to help by becoming his bride. But something strange happened along the way: The As the World Turns duo fell in love for real. And almost one year to the day later, the Frasiers renewed their vows in an intimate ceremony that lived up to all of the bride's dream (complete with livestock and indoor snow!). Family and friends joined the happy couple to help them celebrate thier newfound love for each other and begin their journey to happily ever after.

The Vows:

Priest: The bride and the groom have chosen to write their own vows, which they will signify to each other at this time. Simon?
Simon: Katie, you are a treasure above all treasures. And I promise I will always treat you that way -- with love, kindness and understanding. Especially because there's a lot I don't understand. With you, life is always an adventure and I can't wait to spend eery single second with you. By virtue of being you, you have changed my life and set me free. I love you with all my heart. (Katie kisses him.)
Priest: Katie, that part comes later. Would you like to say your vows now?
Katie: Yes, I would. Actually, I wrote a poem. It's not a very good poem. I kind of messed up sometimes with the rhyming, and not all the words fit. Sometimes I had problems fitting them where they should ...
Priest: Nonetheless, we're all anxious to hear it. Very, very anxious.
Katie: Okay.
Dear Simon, today's the day we get married for real.
No one can imagine the way that I feel.
It started in a car, though it stood very still --
a magical night, a wonderful thrill.
And then we got married, kind of quick, one, two, three.
You wanted your green card, but I wished you'd want me.
You weren't always nice, but I wasn't discouraged.
We still found some fun, and my love was encouraged.
I searched for your diamond, got plane wrecked instead.
Then I missed you so much, nearly wished I was dead.
Then you came to my rescue over the sea.
On the way home, you said you loved me.
e've been through a lot, things both funny and sad.
But when we're together, things never were bad.
It's such a great feeling to be sharing your life.
So I'll sign off with from Katie, your wife.

Okay, I have a couple of other things to say, but they don't rhyme. I was a child when I dreamed about what my wedding day would be like, and when we married the first time, I was a child, but I've grown up. I guess what happens when you love someone more than you love yourself and I do. I love you with my whole heart, Simon, and I know that you are the reason behind every good thing that will ever happen in my life. Priest: I don't believe there's anything left for me to say. So by the power vested in me by the State of Illinois, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Simon, you may kiss the bride.

The Dress:

Katie's dress was meant to be Carly's gown form her aborted nuptials with Jack, but in reality, it was an original creation by Monique Lhuillier Beverly Hills. "We did find one dress," reveals ATWT costume designer Charles Schoonmaker, "a Calvin Klein dress which was totally adorable on Terri Colombino, but we didn't do it because we thought this is no way something that Carly would wear."
Insteady, they chose this strapless gown with boned bodice, beaded waist, and full skirt with petticoats. "[Lhuillier] does really nice wedding dresses," he says. "Her stuff is gorgeous. Really nice attention to detail." In a remarkable coincidence, when the actress wed her real-life husband, Arthur Colombino, in September of 2001, she also wore a dress by Lhuillier.

Go To Top

Editor's Choice: Twice the Love (Soap Opera Digest, January 15, 2002)

If you're not an ATWT fan, you're probably wondering what's up with us and the Jack/Carly, Simon/Katie romances - it seems like every other "Editors' Choice" is about one couple or another. Well, get ready, because this one's about BOTH.
For Jack and Carly, the recent goodbye scenes were tender, familiar and, as usual, bittersweet. Jack had come over before Carly left for Paris to confess his true feelings - which hadn't changed. "No matter who you love, no matter where you go in the world, no man will ever love you as much as I do, EVER," he said, and, within an instant, her heart was his for the taking again. It was a triumphant, told-you-so moment for fans, proof positive of the old adage about nothing stopping the course of true love.
It's only fitting that just as Carly recalled the last time she went to Paris (but was actually kidnapped to Hong Kong) and "missed the wedding of a lifetime" to Jack, Katie was putting on the same gown that Carly had intended to wear before her own (re) wedding of a lifetime to Simon.
If Carly and Jack had the time-tested weariness that comes from a couple who knows the road ahead will be rocky, and therefore ground themselves in preparation, then giddy, goofy Katie and Simon were the exact opposite: floating on air, their heads in the clouds. The only downside for Katie was the fear that no one would show up to share her perfect day. "Do you have any idea how unbelievable you are? Katie, you turned my world around, you perplex and amaze me, and I love you for it so much," Simon said to reassure her before begging the heavens to shine on his wife. Sure enough, it worked: Katie's day was all about miracles in the form of two lambs, a few snowflakes and some last-minute guests. It was her dream come true, a sentiment Katie gushed in the sweetly amateurish poem she recited in lieu of vows while the show flashed back on some of our favorite moments between the two. The Frasier wedding was exactly what it should have been - part wackiness, part wonder, with a dash of sheer sex appeal thrown in at the end.
We loved how uncomfortable Lily looked while trying to be a good sport throughout, as well as the glances exchanged by the other participants, who seemed as seduced by the romance of it all as we were. Craig, a component in both couples, is also worth a note: His devastation upon overhearing Carly and Jack carried over to the wedding, where he shared in his sister's bliss, but tempered it with a sadness that made our hearts ache for him (even though we can't help but hope Carly and Jack get that - what is it now, 15th? - chance at a happy ending.)
So, while the two couples couldn't be more different - Jack and Carly define tortured yearning, while Simon and Katie represent unabashed whimsy - ATWT's decision to overlap their milestones shows that both are about that heart-thumping, can't-stand-to-be-apart kind of grand passion we just don't get enough of these days. It goes without saying that Maura West plus Michael Park and Terri Colombino plus Paul Leyden equals chemistry to spare. Just watch the way Park's Jack and Leyden's Simon hold those worshipful looks when the women are turned away, or how West's Carly and Colombino's Katie let their eyes well up with adoration and relief in knowing they're truly loved.
Of course, all this praise probably still seems excessive if you're not watching ATWT. But, right now, these two couples are the reason YOU SHOULD BE."

Go To Top

Daytime's Romantic Couples (Soaps in Depth, January 15, 2002)

When Soaps in Depth asked you, our readers, to select daytime's most romantic twosomes, your picks reminded us of an age-old adage: Love comes in all shapes and sizes, all textures and colors. In other words, while not every couple that you chose to be featured in this special section celebrates amour in a traditional fashion, they all certainly still thrill to the sting of Cupid's arrow in their hearts.
Trick or Treat: Katie Peretti Fraser and Simon Frasier ... Had Katie believed the adage about it taking two people to make a marriage work, she wouldn't be the happiest bride in Oakdale today. You see, when she wed Simon, it was only to keep her Aussie crush from being deported -- at the time, he was smitted with another woman! But, against all odds, Katie's determination to prove to him that she was his Mrs. Right paid off. After faking a pregnancy, flirting with a dangerous hunk and setting off on a hutn for her hubby's lost family jewel, Katie got her man. Faced with the prospect of losing her, Simon finally was forced to admit, to himself as well as her, that he had fallen hard for his wife.

Go To Top

Press 2000 | Press 2001 | Letters | Tidbits | Other Beautiful Things Press Page
