Valentine's Day is celebrated by giving candy, flowers or other
gifts to someone we love and to people we cherish. It is a day
to give thanks to God for our friends and all those who are
close to our hearts.
St. Valentine was a priest in Rome arrested under Claudius the
Goth for practicing Christianity. He was committed to a
magistrate named Asterius , who had a daughter who was blind.
Valentine cured her and later converted her and the family.
The emporer upon learning of this had him beaten, and then
beheaded. His sentence was carried out the next day, February 14, 270 A.D., near a gate that was later named Porta Valenti in his memory.
He was buried at what is now the Chruch of Praxedes in Rome.
There are several stories regarding the tradition of exchanging Valentine's cards and presents. One of them says that St. Valentine, while imprisoned, was sending messages to the daughter of Asterius and his friends. Today St. Valentine is the patron of engaged couples and those wishing to marry.
Valentine's Day is a special day of love! It is day to celebrate friendship and love. Share a story and a smile with someone you like. It is a time to give little gifts to special people.
