Flatheads- The realm of hairy knuckled brutes
forcing the monsters from the deep with tackle
meant for deep sea fishing.
A new breed of flathead chaser is emerging.
Smaller and prettier and better smelling than flathead
legends of the past, these anglers do battle with the brutes.
With catches rivalling top Catmen these ladies go toe to toe
with mean nasty flatheads and endure the agonizing wait that
is routine for flathead fishermen everywhere.
Meet Emily. New to flathead fishing in the summer
of 2002, she was encouraged to try flathead fishing by her boyfriend.
After 3 fruitless outings, she was beginning to suspect she had been
tricked into some sort of wet muddy snipe hunt.
Emily's boyfriend Rick hooked the first flathead and
let Emily reel it in. Knowing her lack of experience
and the fact that new fishermen often miss flatheads
often before learning when to set the hook, Rick was
prepared to set the hook again when a flathead ran.
Evidently an eager fast learner Emily took the rod and
following Ricks advice, hooked her flathead herself!
Here you see the results of her
effort with this big cat being subdued.
The happy angler and her prize! I am certain
this won't be her last flathead.
Even after the battle Emily insisted on being able to
do what needed to be done. She insisted that she was the one to
release this big flathead to grow-spawn-and fight again.
Congratulations Emily and Rick! We will be looking forward
to more fine flathead adventures in the future.
