Donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur, Lord
Stanley of Preston the Stanley Cup would become the oldest professional sports
award in North America. Lord Stanley, who at the time was Governor General of
Canada, purchased the trophy for 10 Guineas ($50.00 at that time). Originally
the cup was awarded to the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada
and from 1893 to 1926 it was subject to challenges by rival championship teams
throughout Canada. In 1910 the National Hockey Association took possession of
the cup and since then it has represented the pinnacle of excellence in hockey.
Since 1926 only NHL teams have competed for the cup and in 1946 the National
Hockey League made it official by taking official control of it.
Throughout its history there have been many alterations to the cup?s structure.
These alterations were required to accommodate the names of every player and
coach who won the award. In order to make room for new championship teams areas
of the cups surface (bands) have been removed and replaced. The Stanley Cup and
its removed bands are stored at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada.
