The Conn Smythe Trophy was presented to the league in 1964 by Maple Leaf Gardens Limited. The award was created in honor of Conn Smythe, the former coach, president and owner-governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Conn Smythe trophy is awarded annually to the most valuable player to their team during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The winner is chosen by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers? Association immediately following the final game of the Stanley Cup finals. The award is presented to the winner at the conclusion of the final playoff game. In addition to the trophy the winner also receives $10,000.
