These are just a few of the search-sites, to get you started. I've separated the sites into four major categories:
Search Sites - sites that will let you do a search for ancestor information
Link Sites - sites that are listings to other sites (much like this page)
Reference Sites - sites that, in and of themselves, usually contain no family information, but can provide information on a variety of "how do I do this?" topics
Share Sites - sites that allow you to share your research or "brick-wall", or to post or answer queries
My Searches - Sites associated with my research (Stark's, Childer's, and counties they've lived in)
What you will also find, as you look through the tables, that some sites are listed several times. For example, FamilySearch is listed as a Search site, a Surname site, and a Share site. That's because the site provides all of those services.
These sites are search sites for, or associated with, genealogy. These are not your "typical" search engine sites, like Yahoo.com or About.com. Some will do surname searches, some will do a person search, others will let you search other things. If, however, you just want search engines, try this site.
These sites consist of: 1) mainly links to other sites where you can find more information, or 2) sites that are very large with a lot of links on their pages. Some of the link sites, such as Cyndi's List, are REALLY BIG. Take your time going through the big ones, and don't get intimidated by the size of the site. If the size does intimidate you (for now), try the other ones, and get used to trying the links. Enjoy.
These are sites, that in and of themselves, may not be directly related to genealogy, but they can provide either information on how to get information, or can point you in the direction you need to go. The genealogical sites listed, though, do provide information for the genealogist. Also, if you're someone who is looking to prove North American Native Indian ancestry, check out the Cherokee site at RootsWeb.
This is the one you've been waiting for!! These sites will allow you to share your information or brick-walls with other people. These sites will help you meet new family members, who have also taken advantage of the opportunity to share their information. These links will also take you to sites where other people, who are researching the same family you are, have run into a temporary brick-wall, and they're just waiting for you to help them out.
