Russian Czarina Necklace

This necklace is hand woven using a Ukrainian gerdan technique. I imagine gerdany translates as 'beadweaving', but it could well mean 'long tangled thread', since the weaver has a choice of adding new threads (I prefer not to do this, since I feel it can weaken a piece or affect its drape) or else start with multiple meters of thread (you must be very zen while beading and careful when you set the work down). This is a traditional netting stitch where each motif is worked top to bottom and then back again for the length of the necklace. The concept for the stitching is uncomplicated, but it requires uniform tension. For some designs, multiple thread paths are possible, so different beaders may use subtly different approaches.

Each motif in this necklace is 5/8" (15 mm). The length (from 14" to 20") and colors (ruby, sapphire, or emerald with gold or silver) are your choice. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in other colors or variations on the pattern. The beads are silver-lined Japanese Matsuno glass. The closure is a Czech glass druk with beaded loop. The beadwork consists of beads and beading cord only - no glue, solder, or metal - so the piece is suitable for persons with sensitivity to metal or other chemicals. As always, I've reinforced the stitching, so the necklace is strong and flexible, with a substantial 'hand' in keeping with the fine fabric nature of the work. The actual necklace is larger than the photograph.
