District Governors Month

Editorial

In this editorial I would like to bring up three items.

1.     would like to thank  all  those members who either called or contacted myself or other members of my family to inquire as to my health in the last month or so. I am presently on the mend and feeling better and stronger every day. As was mentioned to me by a member who is now on vacation in Portugal as we get older we are more inclined to get sick and once we are sick to suffer for a longer period of time. I would like to remind that member of his age. Yes, it is true, that some of us are no longer spring chickens.

2.     Recently  while reading the Times Journal I noticed that the St. Thomas Lions Club was also submitting their club bulletin to the Times Journal. All that I can  say  is  the more information that is supplied the greater the chance that Lionism on the  whole  will benefit by having articles printed. As a result the population will see just what we Lions are all about and why our motto is 'We Serve'

3.     One  afternoon while listening to a local  radio  talk show a blind person called in and was inquiring if it was true that a blind person could obtain a pension and other benefits from Lions Clubs. Before I could get to the phone to answer the question  a  member from the Kitchener Lions Club was explaining that no the Lions Clubs do not provide pensions to the blind but do help these individuals in various ways. He suggested that the person  who  had called contact his local Lions Club for help. As can be seen  the  Lions message is getting out.

A Night of Cards

Well we did it again!   On February 7th. We were off to Lambeth to carry out one of our favorite pastimes, Euchre. Those attending were, Lions Walt, Butch, Claire, Peter, Wayne, George, Ron Chalk, Terry, Mike G., Don (Breezy) and Heather. Lion Mike seemed to prefer Cribbage but always had someone to play with.

Lion Duncan seemed to have a fondness for Table Number 7. Lions Terry, Don (Breezy) and Heather were awarded prizes because they all have anniversaries in February.    Lion Terry won high hand Male. Drivers were Lion Peter with a van load from Cowal and Lawrence Station. Lion George who also had a carlull and Lions Wayne and Mike G.

It was good to see such a turnout from our club. We had the most players from a club.

Next year Highgate should be the host, although Port Stanley kept saying that they were going to host it.

A good time was had by all.

Dutton & District Lions Club

35th. Anniversary Night

Our MC for the evening was Lion Mike Gardiner who called the members and guest to order at 7:00 P.M. after a Social hour.

The  evening was started with the singing of 0 Canada led by Lion Ron C. on the piano. Toast and Lions Grace by charter member Terry Heeney then followed.

A  delicious meal of roast beef with all the trimmings once again was prepared by the ladies of the St. John's United Church Social  Club.  Lion Terry Heeney thanked the ladies for another splendid meal and for preparing the meals for the Lions club since it obtained  its  charter thirty five years ago.

Entertainment was provided by the Circle of Friends a very talented group of young ladies from the St. Thomas area. Normally four in number this evening they were only three due to illness. They entertained those present with a multitude of religious songs from their repertoire.

The  guest speaker for the evening was Lion Peter Best a visually  impaired member from the Windsor New Vision Lions Club. He explained the many facets of being visually impaired or blind and of the obstacles that the blind have to overcome. He in-formed those present that his vision had been impaired since birth.

. Lion His recommendation was that if and where Lions clubs have blind members blind  interested  in a service club, and also the club membership  in  a greater understanding of the blind and of their needs. Many related questions were asked of Lion Peter at the end of his presentation

Acknowledgements to the Dutton & District Lions Club were presented by  District A-1 Governor Dale Taylor and Mayor  Rein  Van Brenk.  Members of the Kiwanis Club of West Lorne also acknowledged the many projects of the Dutton Lions Club.  They presented the Lions Club with a cheque for $50.00 towards the Lake Joseph Centre.

Recognition of the Dutton and District Lions Clubs Past Presidents was made and Lion Claire while recognition of other clubs  present  was made by Lion Mike.

Charter member Lion Terry Heeney spoke of the  1967 Charter Night, of the clubs history and of the many of the many accomplishments by the club during the past thirty five years.   He recognized Charter members or  their spouses who were present.

Attendance awards were then presented to various club members followed by the  annual  awards presentation.   Lion member receiving the Helen  Keller award was  Lion Claire Oldham. The Judge Brian  Recognition Stevenson Fellowship award was presented to Walt Thibodeau and Lion of the Year award was presented to Lion Ron Poisson.

The fun filled and entertaining evening was then  adjourned.

Although the evening had adjourned many of those present stayed   and chatted with past members, guests  and  present members.  Many an old memory was renewed by past members or members who gazed through the well maintained club historical binders kept Lion Terry  Heeney.
