***** Starting in September of 1997, we began reviewing and learning the alphabet letters in a different sort of way. Each week we worked on one letter of the alphabet. One of the days of the week, I drew a large shape of the letter we were working on in block style. Then depending on what letter it was, we glued on object(s) starting with that letter. Example cotton on "C", seeds on "S" etc. Most of them I put on heavy paper or cardboard so it would be sturdier, and then added them to a 3 ring binder for each child to take home at the end of the school year. Here are the rest: A = apple stickers B = buttons C = cotton D = dandelions (if available) or dirt E = eggshells F = feathers &/or felt scraps G = gummy bears and worms H = hearts I = ice cream cone stickers (I found them at a hallmark store) J = jelly beans K = kisses (put on lipstick and kiss away!! but ask parents first in case of allergies) L = lace M = money (play bills, of course) N = noodles O = oak leaves (if available) or orange peelings P = peanut shells Q = quilt scraps (fabric inch squares) R = rice S = seeds T = magazine pictures of toys U = unicorn stickers V = valentine hearts W = wax paper &/or wrapping paper scraps X = That's a tough one! I had a picture of an x-ray for them to color Y = color the letter yellow Z = zippers (taken from old kids-sized jeans) An idea from Kristin - Thanks!! I take a big piece of poster board and draw the letter of the week in the middle. We talk about the letter and it's sound. Then we go around the playroom looking for items that start with that letter. When we have gathered as many items as we can find I either glue them or tape them onto the posterboard and hang it on the wall. Each day while the kids are waiting for lunch we talk about the letter and what things we put on the poster, Sometime there aren't many things in the playroom that start with the letter so we draw pictures of things to put on our poster or cut pics out of magazines/catalogs. And I am always looking for idea's to help them learn. Watching them play one day, I thought "Why not cut out the Letter or Number or Shape etc. that we are working on and hide it?" So I took the Letter "C" cut it out of Purple construction paper, asked the daycare kids to have a seat facing the wall looking at me. We talked about the letter "C" and the color Purple. Then I asked them to cover their eyes and I proceeded to hide the Letter "C" (not too hard of a place) Each time one of the children found it they would yell out "I found the Purple C"!!!!
