GREAT WHITE TROPHY CASE




Hoser Cup: Awarded to the GWHL Champions immediately following the playoffs. The cup was donated by honourary league co-presidents Bob and Doug MacKenzie after they sent away for and received new mugs through a promotion sponsered by a local brewery.

Gordie Howe Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL’s outstanding player as selected by members of the GWHL Players' Association. The award is named after the legendary Detroit Red Wing player Gordie Howe, multiple trophy winner (MVP, Scoring), All-Star, and Hall of Famer.

762 Esposito Trophy: Awarded to the player who leads the GWHL in total points for the regular season. This trophy is named after 5 time scoring champion Phil Esposito. The 762 refers to Espo’s 1971 season record of 76 goals and 76 assists. Phil Esposito was a 6 time 1st team All-Star and is in the Hall of Fame.

Bobby Hull Trophy: Awarded to the player scoring the highest number of goals during the GWHL regular season. The award is named after the great goal-scorer Bobby Hull, who led the league in goals 7 out of 10 seasons. This Black Hawk is in the Hall of Fame.

Stan Mikita Trophy: Awarded to the player scoring the highest number of assists during the GWHL regular season. The award is named after the great Chicago Black Hawks playmaker Stan Mikita who recorded the highest number of assists for three consecutive seasons. Mikita was also the first player to win 3 major awards (MVP, scoring, gentlemanly player) in one season.

#4 Bobby Orr Trophy: Awarded to the best offensive defenseman in the GWHL regular season. Arguably the best player of all-time, Orr set numerous scoring records (only defenseman to win a scoring title – TWICE) and won an unheard of 8 straight best defenseman awards with the Boston Bruins. Knee injuries deprived this Hall of Famer a chance to put the defenseman scoring records out of reach to all who followed him.

Rod Langway Trophy: Awarded to the league’s best defensive defenseman as selected by a vote of hockey writers and sportscasters. The award is named after Washington Capitals great Rod Langway, a multiple award winner and All-Star.

Bob Gainey Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL’s top defensive forward as selected by the coaches’ association. Gainey was the original ‘smothering’ forward and won this award 4 straight seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. The Soviet Union’s coach, Viktor Tikhonov, called this Hall of Famer, "technically the best player in the world".

Terry Sawchuk Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL’s most outstanding goaltender, as selected by a vote of the Hall of Fame goalies. The award is named after the Detroit Red Wings record setting goalie Terry Sawchuk, a multiple award winner, All-Star and Hall of Famer.

Tony-"O" Trophy: This trophy is given to the goalie(s), whose team lead the GWHL in goals against average for the regular season. This award is named after the Chicago Black Hawk legend Tony Esposito, who set league records for shutouts in a season (15) and GAA (1.77). Tony-O was the league’s rookie of the year and top goaltender in the 1970 season.

Gilbert Perreault Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL’s top rookie, this trophy is named after the Buffalo Sabres greatest player, Gilbert Perreault. Perreault set a league rookie scoring record (38 goals, 72 points) in 1971 and was a 7 time All-Star. This Hall of Famer lead the Sabres to the Stanley Cup finals in only their 5th year of existence.

Marcel Dionne Trophy: Awarded to the player combining the highest type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct plus a high standard of playing ability, as selected by a vote of hockey writers and sportscasters. The award is named after Los Angeles Kings center Marcel Dionne, a multiple award winner, All-Star and Hall of Famer.

The Big "M" Trophy: Awarded to the Most Valuable Player in the GWHL Cup playoffs as selected in a vote of the GWHL governors. The award is named after the BIG M - Frank Mahovlich of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This Hall of Famer was a 15 time All-Star and won 6 Stanley Cups during his career.

Dave Keon Trophy: Awarded to the player who exhibits true leadership, drive and a never say die attitude for their GWHL team. This trophy is given to the player selected by the general managers of the league. It is named after Toronto Maple Leaf Hall of Famer Dave Keon, who lead the Leafs to 4 (yes 4) Stanley Cups in the early/mid 1960s.

Ken Dryden Trophy: Awarded to the player receiving the highest number of three star points during the GWHL regular. The award is named after Montreal Hab great Ken Dryden, who won or shared this trophy for five seasons during a six season period. Dryden is a multiple award winner and a Hall of Fame member.

Mike Bossy Trophy: Awarded to the All-Star Game MVP. Bossy, a sniper extraordinaire was overshadowed only by Wayne Gretzky when it came to putting the puck in the net. During his 10 year career, he failed to score 50 goals only in his last season when he totaled 38 tallies in 63 matches.

The "Jethro" Trophy: Awarded to the top power forward of the GWHL by combining the highest number of goals and the most penalty minutes together (2 x goals + PIMs). The award is named after Clark "Jethro" Gilles, the power forward on the NY Islanders famed 'Trio Grande' line along with Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy. Note: A player MUST score a minimum of 20 goals and earn 200+ PIMs to be awarded this trophy.

Al Arbour Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL coach of the year, who is best able to get the most from his players during the regular season and selected by the general managers’ association. The award is named after the famed coach of the NY Islanders dynasty that was only halted by the emergence of the Edmonton Oilers in the early 80's.

Sam Pollock Trophy: Awarded to the GWHL GM who completes his league duties with diligence, care and responsibility. In addition, the Pollock winner should make the league better by providing leadership and helpful suggestions. This trophy is awarded by the commissioner's office in consultation with the league’s committee chairpersons. It is named after Montreal’s legendary GM Sam Pollock who guided "Les Habitant" to 9 Stanley Cups in 14 years.

Howie Meeker Trophy: Awarded to the team which has the best press coverage throughout the season as voted on by the GWHL Hockey Writer's Association. The Award is named after Howie Meeker who was a staple of hockey broadcasts throughout the 70's and 80's.
