Learn Elvish! Newsletter Beginning Quenya (October 2002) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Tina, Hi all and welcome to the second issue of Beginning Quenya. If you missed the first, have no fear -- the first issue has been posted on the webpage, and as each one is sent out, I will post them as well. This issue will deal with some more basics of the Quenyan language, add to your vocabulary, and have a little bit of a review of the last newsletter, for those who newly-joined. I hope you enjoy it and learn lots! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ in this issue ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Festivities * Review of Prefixes & Suffixes * Making Words "Full" * Pluralizing Festivities ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy Halloween for all of you who celebrate it. In keeping with the autumn theme, I've decided that will be the word list for today. This might be a bit of a review, but it's applicable for now, so your word list will be the months of the year and the seasons. MONTHS January - Narvinyė February - Nénimė March - Sulimė April - Viressė May - Lotessė June - Nariė July - Cermiė August - Urimė September - Yavanniė October - Narqueliė November - Hisimė December - Ringare SEASONS The Elvish seasons are more specific than our own - for example, there are two sections of both spring and autumn (early and late). Early Spring - Tuilė Late Spring - Coirė Summer - Lairė Early Autumn - Yaviė Late Autumn - Quellė Winter - Hrģvė For all you who already have or will be celebrating Thanksgiving, there is a Quenyan word for it - "Hantallė". Some more seasonal words are "ornė"- tree, "lossė"-fallen snow (also means white), "lassė"-leaf (pl. "lasser" or "lassi"). Review of Prefixes & Suffixes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All those who did not receive the first issue of Beginning Quenya, this article is for you. Now, as in the English language, there are suffixes (semi-words that attach themselves to the end of other words) and prefixes (semi-words that attach themselves to the beginning of words) in Quenya, though Quenya has a lot more and more frequently used. For example, for verb conjugation (ex. I jump, you jump, they jump), the words "I", "you" and "they" are suffixes and therefore attach them to the end of the verb root. So roughly, 'I cover' in English would translate to "cover I" in Quenya. Here are some verb roots: "tup"-to cover; "avant"-to forgive; "ea"-to be (permanently);"na"-to be (temporarily); "ohtar"-to war; "anta"-to give; For all these verb roots, I want you to conjugate them accordingly: singular (I), plural (we), past tense, and future tense. These will be explained in the next paragraph, and this is not a hand-in assignment, though I encourage you to do it, as it will give you a better grasp on the language. 'I (verb)' is made by simply adding an 'a' onto the end of the word. I've found this is an anomaly because the Quenyan word 'I' is not a suffix. However, for conjugation they merely add 'a' when 'I' is implied. If there is already an 'a' on the end, don't add another one. So, for example (I'll do the first one for you) "Tup" would be "tupa" for 'I cover'. Go ahead and do the rest. 'We' is the suffix -elme which is used in the same way. For verb conjugations excluding pronoun use, there is a resource on the main page to help you. To make something in the future tense (ex. I will jump) simply add -uva to your word. If you add it to the base verb root it will be "will jump" but if you add 'I' to it, such as "tupa" and then add -uva, it will be "I will jump" (ex. "Tupauva"). Unlike in the English language, Quenya doesn't mind if many vowels are around each other, because they are said separately anyway. Past tense is just as easy: simply add either -e or - ie to the word, which will make it "I had carried". The link for the page on Verb Conjugations is listed below in the newsletter for easy reference. Don't be afraid to look at it if you need help. Verb Conjugation >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/verbs.html Making Words "Full" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This article is how to make adjectives out of nouns. Sounds hard, but it really isn't! As soon as you understand in English how to do it, Quenya will come that much easier. My first example (which will make things so easy) is beautiful. That's my example - 'beautiful'. To take a noun (such as 'beauty') and turn it into 'beautiful' you simply need to add the '-ful' part. That '-ful' translates into "-ima", so just take the Quenyan word for 'beauty' ("van") and add "-ima" and you have "vanima" - 'beautiful'! It's that easy! Here are some words that can end in '-ful'. For your assignment today, add the "-ima" ending to make the appropriate word. It would be helpful to write the English equivent of the new word made to help you understand better. Have fun. -approach (tul) -dread (gaya) -hope (estel) -fist (quaare) -fruit (yave) This is not a hand-in assignment, however if you're having trouble with it, please feel free to hand it in for help. Hand-in Email address >> mailto:freedombelle@hotmail.com Pluralizing ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Making plural nouns out of singular nouns by simply adding a letter onto the end of the word or replacing it with another letter. For this section, I want you to get out a piece of paper and pen and do the work so it sticks in your head. Here are the rules: -if a word ends with a, add '-i' to make it plural; -if a word ends with o, replace it with '-i' to make it plural; -if a word ends with any other vowel, add '-r' to make it plural. Your assignment is to pluralize these Quenyan words (the English equivalent is in brackets): -norno (oak tree) -sģrė (river) -toopa (roof) -pio (cherry) -tyuru (cheese) -anta (face) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quick Links... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Learn Elvish webpage >> http://www.learnelvish.com Learn Elvish Chatroom >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/chatroom.html English-Quenya Dictionaries >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/english.html Quenya-English Dictionaries >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/quenya.html Feedback Form >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/feedback.html Last Month's Newsletter >> http://www.stormpages.com/axana/misc/bquenya1.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ email: freedombelle@hotmail.com voice: (204)365-0385 web: http://www.learnelvish.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
