Consonant Pronunciation Guide
When a consonant is written double (such as in tell
or confess), it is pronounced longer.
NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, the
letter is pronounced exactly as in common
English words.
C - pronounced as English k, never
pronounced as s.
Example: (English) car, (Elvish) calma.
H - pronounced much the same. See hy and hw in
Consonant Clusters for further information.
J - there is no record of J in the Quenyan or Sindarin
alphabet or used in any of the words.
Q - is pronounced much the same, but is not
always followed by u.
R - Many different (debatable) pronunciations.
Can be trilled, tapped, or continued, but for the
most part, it's assumed they are hard.
Z - it is believed that z merged with
s, and that is why there is no further record
of it being used in the alphabet or any of the words.
zh - pronounced as the s in pleasure.
th - not present in Quenya, as it merged
with s.
hy - pronounced as in English. Example: huge.
hw - when present after a vowel, the h
is silent, so only the w is voiced.
ng - pronounced in the back of the throat, as
nya, as in some Spanish words.
nw - pronounced much like ng, in the back
of the throat, as nyaw.
