Vampire Crimes: Vampire of Teheran
A TAXI driver known as the "Teheran Vampire" was hanged from a crane yesterday, watched by thousands of people including relatives of the nine passengers he raped and murdered. Several of the victims' male relatives took turns at whipping Gholamreza Kordieh, 28, before he was tied to the yellow mobile crane and lifted, legs kicking, high into the air. The location of the hanging had not been announced, but had leaked out. Many in the crowd of some 10,000 cursed the convicted killer, whose body was left hanging for more than an hour at the site in western Teheran. About 1,000 police in riot gear were positioned around the site and police closed streets for several miles. Photos were not allowed. Nasser Parchami, father of 25-year-old Parvand, one of the victims, said:"I have no life or future left, but I'm still not satisfied with the punishment this killer is getting for killing my daughter." Kordieh was accused of killing 11 women. But a court found that he had murdered nine women and girls aged 10 to 47. Two of the victims were a mother and daughter. Kordieh was sentenced to 214 lashes and well as life imprisonment and death 10 times. His whipping began on Monday. Kordieh's last words were: "I borrowed money from no one and I owe none to anyone. I ask God for forgiveness for what I did." He terrorised women in Teheran during a three-month spree of kidnap, rape and murder.
