What is Shock Treatment?
Shock Treatment is the "sort of" sequel to RHPS. The only returning characters are Brad, Janet, Ralph, and Betty - and out of those, only Ralph is played by the same actor. Most of the RHPS cast features in the movie, though. For instance, the roles of Drs. Cosmo and Nation McKinley, an incestuous brother and sister, are portrayed by Richard O'Brien and Patricia Quinn, the Riff Raff and Magenta of RHPS. Other familliar faces include Little Nell and Charles Gray.
Not all RHPS fans are fond of Shock Treatment, mainly because it's nothing like Rocky. There is less sex (though "Lullaby" is, in my opinion, one of the most sensual scenes in cinematic history) and no Tim Curry. The film's plot isn't easy to explain. It is a bizarre satire on the influence of the media, especially television, on our morals and beliefs. Supposedly "real life" elements such as marriage and sanity are all part of an elaborate television line-up. In order to understand the plot, it's best to watch Shock Treatment more than once. Even if you don't understand it, the music alone makes repeat viewings worthwhile. |
