| Race and Racialism: Q&A |
A: Harvard Professor John McWhorter made this argument in his controversial book Losing the Race. He said, "Yet at the end of the day, it must always be remembered that even though blacks do commit more crimes than whites, most blacks don't commit crimes." (italics in original) (p. 20) But this argument is ridiculous on its face. Who in their right mind would want to work and live and raise children in an area where 49% of blacks (roughly 1 in 2, but still a minority of blacks) are indecent and unlawful? Obviously, the proportion of criminally-minded blacks is not that large; but the point is made that it is not whether a majority of blacks are decent or not, but rather it is the size of the unlawful minority that counts. Current statistics show that one-third of all black men in their twenties are either on probation, on parole or in prison. In Washington, D.C. the situation is worse with half of all black men, 18-35, under correctional supervision. And while these proportions do not constitute a majority, they do make up a very sizable minority. |
