Members of the Phillippi Baptist Church. This church, erected about
1830, still stands. Of course the building has been updated with vinyl
siding. Across the road is an abandoned cemetary that was called the
Phillippi Baptist Church Cemetary.

Anthony was a Revolutionary War soldier attached to the Georgia militia.
He was also a slave owner.

Notes for FERDINAND CRUMBLEY:


Ferdinand enlisted in the Confederate Army at Griffin, Georgia serving as
a private in Companby G, 63rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry.
Ferdinand was home on sick leave and was captured by Sherman's army at
his home on November 17, 1864.

Ferdinand learned that the army was down the road from his home. To
escape being captured, he hastily hid in the cotton barn, placing himself
very close th the wall where there was a crack. His face was covered
with some type of cloth and a hollow cane allowed him to breathe through
the crack. Then he was covered with cotton.

Everything possible was done to hide him but he was found and taken
prisoner. Not only did the family lose Ferdinand, but they lost a mule,
a mare, a young horse, a buggy, 17 hogs, 2 cows, 6 sheep, and $7 in
silver. 10 bales of cotton were burned in the yard.

Ferdinand died while at Point Lookout Confederate Prison of diarrhea. A
marker in his memory has been placed in Beersheba Cemetary.
