As the Pack wraps up a highly successful Popcorn Sale, I'd like to thank the Scouts and their families for their enthusiasm and drive to make this our most rewarding sales ever. My hats off to you!

I'd also like to take a moment to talk about a few of the underlying purposes of the Popcorn Sale. Sure, it's the Packs main source of income for the year. But beyond that it's a lesson in financial responsibility for the boys. One of the goals is to teach the Scouts salesmanship, money handling skills, and the idea of “pay-as-you-go”.

This idea of learning financial responsibility and “pay-as-you-go” extends far beyond just the Popcorn Sale. It should remain an on going lesson throughout the year. There are many opportunities to continue this principle. The weekly Den dues are a prime example. Have your Scout pay his own dues weekly. It doesn't teach him much when Mom or Dad just writes a check for the next month or two. Find an odd job or two around the house so he can earn his dues money and have him “pay his own way”.

Another idea is his uniform. They're not cheap and by having your Scout help to buy his own he'll come to realize that. It might even help him to take better care of it and have more pride in it.

There are other ways such as school lunch or book club money, sports fees, and so on.

These are just a couple of ideas. I'm sure you can think of many more. Use your imagination!

Cub Scouting is fun, but it's also a chance to learn and develop strong character traits.

Yours in Scouting...
