Descendants of John Barney Stagner
Generation No. 1
1. John Barney1 Stagner was born 1714 in Zweibrucken Co, Oberauerbach, Rhineland-Pfalz, and died 22 Jun 1777 in Boonesborough, Ky. He md Anna Elisabetha Findler. She was born 1715 in Germany.
Notes for John Barney Stagner:
The Stagner's arrived in Philadelphia aboard the small merchant ship Thistle on Oct 28, 1738. The Stagner's whereabouts between their arrival and about 1753 is not known, but they were among the earliest settlers in Rowan County, North Carolina. On July 13, 1763, John became a naturalized subject of the British Crown and was also appointed one of the commissioners with Daniel Boone to lay off a road from Shallow Ford on the Yadkin River to Salisbury. RICHARD P. STAGNER FAMILY Johann Bernhardt Steigner, or John Barney Stagner as he came to be known, was born in he Palatinate region of Germany in 1714. He was married about 1732. Due to religious wars and famine, John Barney Stagner,
his wife Elizabeth and at least one child, decided to come to the American Colonies. They sailed from Rotterdam aboard the ship Brillander Thistle and arrived in Philadelphia in the winter of 1738.By 1753, the Stagner's were residing in Rowan Co, NC. He was a planter. They were among the earliest settlers of that area. John Barney Stagner's name is found among the court records of Rowan Co as early as 1757 when he was appointed tax collector. Two items appear in the court minutes which greatly determined his future. July 13, 1763 proved to be a fateful day for John Barney Stagner, for on that day he became a naturalized subject of the British Crown. Also on that day, he was appointed one of the commissioners with Daniel Boone to lay off a road from Shallow Ford on the Yadkin River to Salisbury. Because he refused to pledge allegiance to the colony and because of his close friendship for Daniel Boone, his neighbors became hostile toward him. In 1775, the Stagner's with a few settlers went with Daniel Boone and family through the Cumberland Pass into Ky. John Barney Stagner was beheaded by Indians June 22, 1777, and his head stuck up on a pole above the big springs. Richard P Stagner (10/3/1800-12/26/1878), son of James Barney Stagner, and grandson of John Barney Stagner, married Elizabeth Harris June 21, 1821 in KY There were eight children. Elizabeth died and he married Mary Catherine Snavely, December 31, 1844. Eight children were born to this marriage. This family lived in Howard Co, MS for a while before settling one mile south and four and Three-fourths miles east of Dawn, MS. Children of Richmond and Elizabeth Harris Stagner were Jefferson, James, Thomas, Nancy, Sally, Mary, Dianah, and David.
The children of Mary Cathern Snavely and Richmond Stagner were Robert, Byrd, Susan, Richard, William, Albert, Alimeade, and Charley. Jefferson Stagner (1/17/1822 - 3/27/1874), married Nancy Allen Shrewsbury (5/6/1823-8/29/1862) on July 22, 1841. Their children were: Margaret Ann, John James, born
in Kentucky and Sarah Bell, Speed Richmond, Lytle Jasper, Amanda Catherine, Armilda P. Allie Jane, Marandaville (Rannie), and an infant son, all of whom were born in Livingston County, near Blue Mound. Jefferson md Emily F A Martin May 15, 1864. They had one daughter, Mariah. Margaret Ann Stagner md Charles McAlear about 1862. The Blue Mound post office was located in the McAlear home.
On June 10, 1883 a destructive tornado swept through the community leveling the McAlear farmstead as well as others. The McAlear's gave three-fourths of an acre in north east corner of their farm for the purpose of building a church. (see churches).Speed Richmond Stagner (12/25/1847 -4/19/1903) went to SD, and md an Indian girl and became a rancher. Lytle Jasper Stagner (8/21/1850 - 1/24/1913), went to St. Joseph, MS at age fourteen, got a job with a freight company. He made two round trips to Denver, Colorado walking all the way. WILMETH STAGNER BROWN In the last half of the 1760's interest was increasing in the hunting and farming lands beyond the Alleghany Mountains in Ky. Daniel Boone was one of the early pioneers to follow Indian trails through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky in 1769.
After two years, he returned to Rowan Co to make plans to move his family to Ky. Barney, as he was called, was impressed with Boone's stories and in 1774 refused to take the oath of allegiance to the colony. He traveled with Boone to KY, arriving about Sep 26, 1775. Captain James Harrod named Barney "keeper of the fort springs" at Boonesborough. The Indians were frequently shooting at the fort, and Harrod warned people to remain inside the fort. Barney left the fort
against these warnings to graze his horse and was killed at the big spring, one half mile from the fort. The Indians cut off his head and stuck it on a pole outside the fort.

Christiana married first, Hugh Wilson. After he was killed and scalped by the Indians, on 18 March 1777, she married, at Harrodsburg, four weeks later, 19 April 1777, James Berry. One of Christiana's descendants has suggested she died about 1804 or 1805 in either Mercer or Garrard Co, Ky.
Regarding Christiania1s second marriage to James Berry, Mrs. Maria T. Daviess wrote in the 1880s:
She had neither protection nor help, and was forced by the need of both and sense of Propriety to secure it in this repugnant way, and it is probable the young man married as much from compassion and a rude, chivalrous sense of honor as from tendered motives.

Notes for William Stagner:
Wiliam Stagner may have been the first of his brothers who moved to Tennessee. He served as a scout and spy during the Indians Wars of Tennessee, 1787-1791.
His range of duty extended from Lindsey`s Bluff in Sumner County to Barton`s Creek, in what is now Wilson County, Tennessee. Spies usually worked in pairs. During this period of service, William worked with Bishop in tour with Nat Parker and William Wilmouth. William Stagner and Bishop was from North Carolina, and after their service, Bishop returned to North Carolina to see his father. William may have returned also, but if so he returned to Sumner County, TN before 1794 where he was recorded on the Tax Records for that year.

It`s not known how many family members accompanied Nathan when they emigrated from North Carolina to Kentucky in the late 1780`s. Nathan and his brothers, John, William, Baranbas and Andrew crossed thru the Cumberland Gap, and most likley worked their way to Warren County, Kentucky. It is unknown how many was in this party, but due to Indian hostilities, there would have been others for their own protection from hostile Indians. Nathan emigrated to Sumner Co, Tn ca1805, Stewart Co, Tn 1806 and Benton Co, TN 1837
The first record found related to Nathan Stagner was 1806, Sumner Co, TN; other than the 1850 Census Record that recorded his birth as being born in North Carolina in 1770 was recorded on 4 Jan 1806: Sumner Co., TN., Deed Book 4, page 148, January 4, 1806; James Denny of Barren Co, Ky to Nathan Stagner, 100 acres on Paten`s Fork of Drake`s Creek, and on page 141 with the date 22 Oct 1806, Nathan Stagner sold this land to Luellan Phipps.
The next entry was found in Stewart Co, TN, Deed Book 3. page 236, Land Records; dated 25 Oct 1808, James Womack of Stewart County to Nathan Stagner of Stewart County, part of 640 acres tract...Witness: Thomas McGee and Aaron Fletcher. Page 212, 24 Jan 1809; James Womack to William Haggard, 540 acres on Hickman Creek, land of Nathan Stagner mentioned, Witness: James People, Noah Haggard.
It is unknown for sure the wife of Nathan Stagner because she died after the 1840 and before the 1850 Census. There is a entry in the Stewart Co, TN Deed Book 4, 1810-1813, page 441: Isaac Brunson to Nathan Ross, 8 acres on Spring Branch at Cumberland River, Witness...John Acree, Sally X Stagner, John Perry, 12 May 1812. The above Sally who left her mark "X" may have been the wife of Nathan Stagner, because he was the only "Stagner" with a entry in the Stewart Co, TN Tax Records for 1812. (Sally cannot be documented; will not include her as Nathan`s wife)
In 1837 Nathan moved to Benton Co, TN where he was first counted on the Tax Books, January 1836 - September 1855, Roll #59. From Deed Book A, 1821 - 1847 Page 417, a entry for Nathan Stagner dated 31 March 1842, 66-3/20 acres bordered on the corner of 125 acres in the name of James Stagner (his son). Ownership of this land was from a Occupancy Deed. James born 1804 in North Carolina was the oldest son of Nathan and Unknown. Nathan paid Taxes, 1837 - 1857. Nathan died during the year of 1857 at the age of 87 years, and most likely was buried in the Crooked Creek Cem, Big Sandy, Benton Co, TN.

There is a discrepancy as to where James Stagner was born! From the 1850 Federal Census, Benton Co, TN, he is listed as being born in NC, and from the 1860 Federal Census, Benton Co, TN he is listed as being born in Kentucky. I am of the opinion that he may have been born in Kentucky, were after the death of John Barney Stagner, at Fort Harrod, Ky on 22 June 1777, some of his children moved to Warren Co, Ky. James C. Stagner`s father; Nathan Stagner, son of John Stagner, II, may have lived in Kentucky for a brief time before emigrating to Sumner Co, TN in ca1806. At this time, the boundaries of the States and Counties were changing. It is best told by and old timer! He said, that you would go to bed at night and wake up in the morning and wonder what State you were in, then you could set out on your porch and watch the Counties go by! From this, you will understand the problems that confronted these early settlers during this period when it came time to give their statements as to where they were born.
On Feb. 7, 1836 the Tennessee State Legislature took a small portion of the southeast corner of Henry County, and added to Benton County, creating it`s 9th Civil District.
James Stagner was in this section of Henry County in February 1836 when district nine was created. What was to become the 9th Civil District, Benton Co, TN. It was in 1836 in District Nine, Benton Co., TN., were James started paying Taxes, in 1836 thru 1867. James died that year and his wife Ziliann paid the taxes for 1868. Ziliann died in 1869, living with the oldest son; William Oscar
Stagner now living on the James C. Stagner`s homestead, also known as the old widows house were Lavina lived after the passing of her husband, William Oscar in 1885 and also were Ziliann lived after the passing of her husband, James in 1867.
From Roll #59, Benton County Clerk of Miscellaneous Records, Vol: 1-2 May 1836- Sept. 1859, found the following: District #9 was created from a small section of Southeast corner of Henry Co, TN on 6 Jan 1836:
District No. 9 begins at the bank of the Tennessee River, at the lower corner of No. 8 under the river to the lower bank of Lick Creek then comes between Benton & Henry County, then west to Sandy River, then up Sandy River, leading from Paris to Point Mason and with that road to the old county line and then with the same to the beginning. And say the elections in said District shall be held at the house of: James Stagner. Given unto our hands as the 6th. day of January 1836.
Signed:
G.W.L. Hudson
E. Perkins
Amos Brull
Nickalus Brewer
James did not obtain ownership on this 125 acres until after the passage of the Tennessee Settler`s Act. of 1842, and from Benton County, Deed Records, March 31 1842, Vol: EB, Page 260, he proved ownership from a Occupancy Deed.
James Stagner was appointed a School Commissioner for the School Years 1844-1845, Page 145 alone with William Wright. There were 214 Pupils on the Scholastic population between the ages of 6 and 21 years of age for Benton Co, TN.
James Stagner`s Hires, sold to Mrs. William Lindsey ( Eliza Stagner),daughter of William Oscar Stagner and wife of William H. Lindsey 75 acres, part of the James Stagner Homestead. All of James`s sons had a interest in this 75 acres, and all the sons signed the Deed. This transaction took place shortly after the passing of their father, James. They sold this land for what James would have had to pay taxes for that year and also a transfer fee, all toll less than five dollars. Vol: H Page 735, Deed Records, Benton Co, TN. William Oscar and wife and their children lived on the other 75 acres, up to the time of his passing in 1885.

58. James Marion4 Stagner (Andrew3, John Barney2, John Barney1) was born 13 Mar 1833 in Warren Co, KY, and died 11 Jul 1869 in Oak Hill, TX. He md Pauline James Thurston 16 Oct 1855 in Warren Co, KY. She was born 12 Apr 1833 in Ky, and died 21 Jan 1916 in Bastrop Co, TX.
James Marion Stagner was the third son and fifth child of Andrew and Mary Miers Stagner. He was born on 13 March 1833 in Warren County (Bowling Green) Kentucky. The 1850 census for Warren county lists his occupation as "laborer" and indicates that he had attended school within that year. He marriedPauline Thurston on 12 April 1855 and a deed dated 19 December 1855 shows thatthey purchased 160 acres of land (known as the Thurston tract of land upon which Rueben Thurston died) in Warren County. James and Pauline later emigrated toTexas. They traveled by boat down the Green river to the Ohio river to the Mississippi river to New Orleans. They traveled by steamboat to Galveston, then toIndianola on the Texas coast. They traveled from there to Lockhart by stagecoach and after a short stay moved to Bastrop where James made his living as a tanner and shoemaker. James enlisted in the Confederate service on 22 March 1862. He joined Capt. J.Z. Millers Company, Allen's Regiment, Texas Infantry at Camp Terry. Allen's Regiment (17th Regiment) completed its organization by election of field officers on 9 June 1862. The 17th was composed of 10 Companies that had been formed during March, April and May. On 27 October 1862 James was sent ondetached duty to the Tan Yard in Little Rock Arkansas where shoes, saddles andother leather goods were made for the Confederate army. James served there until the war was over in April of 1865. After the war James moved his family to Piney Creek near where the Oak Hill Church was built and the cemetary is now located. Notes for John Green Clark:
From "The Family and Descendants of William and Sophia Clark Dawson" by J. Algene Steele:
"Information for John Green and Mary Ann Stagner Clark's children comes from Tennessee Census 1850, 1860, and 1870. They moved to Tennessee with Mary Ann parents in the 1840's and lived near them in Henry County, Tennessee, at least through 1870 (house number-census page no.: 126-721; 219-440; and -386).
"The 1870 Census adds the children Alice, Harriet, James and Julia. It is assumed that James and Julia are twins as their ages are so close.
"Additionally, the 1870 census notes the presence of Julia Cummings, b. ca 1805 (Va.), a black cook, and Silas Erwin, b. ca 1792 (NC).
"The 1880 Census lists John R., Andrew T., Barbery A., Josephine M., James L. and Julia B. (noted as twins), and Wesley A. As Wesley is 8 years old in 1880 it is presumed that there were not any other children born to this family. Leonard is married and living nearby. Amanda must be married also.
"John Green Clark died of throat cancer.
"It was after 1847 that the John Green Clark family moved to Henry Co, TN, from Trigg Co, Ky. John G. Clark married Mary Ann Stagner on 25 Jul 1842 in Trigg County. John's middle name was Green according to Huey Osbron, grandson of John Robert Clark. The John G. Clark family has been located in the census returns of Henry Co, TN, as follows:
1850 Census: 13th District, page 721, no. 126
1860 Census: 13th District, page 440, no. 1522
1870 Census: 13th District, page 131, P.O. Crossland
1880 Census: 14th District, page 226, no. 95
"From these census returns it is known that John G. Clark was born about 1823 in Kentucky. The death dates for John G. Clark and his wife were provided from family papers in the possession of Garlon Clar, grandson of John Robert Clark. According to older family member, John G. Clark died of throat cancer, which was verified in a brief report of his death in a Paris, Tennessee newspaper.
"The identity of the parents of John Green Clark has not yet been determined by direct evidence. However, there are several reasons for believing that his parents were William Clark and Sophia Dawson Clark of Trigg County, Kentucky.
"Sophia Dawson Clark had a brother named Greenup Dawson proven by the will of their father, John Dawson, who died in 1834 in Trigg Co, Ky. Thus John Green Clark could have been named from his maternal grandfather and maternal uncle (if Green can be considered a shortened form of Greenup).
"John G. Clark's oldest son was named William, probably thus preserving the name of John G. Clark's father.
"In the 1880 census there are columns indicating the place of birth of the parents of each person. It is there indicated that John G. Clark's father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in Kentucky. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses listing of William and Sophia Clark of Trigg County consistently list their places of birth as Virginia and Kentucky.
"The 1830 census of Trigg County shows only one Clark family in the entire county: William Clark. John G. Clark fits nicely into this family in the age grouping of 5-10.
William Clark's Household
1 male aged 30-40 (William)
1 male aged 5-10 (John G.)
1 male aged less than five (Samuel)
1 female aged 20-30 (Sophia)
3 females aged less than 5 (Mary, Susan, Elizabeth)
"The 1840 census of Trigg County shows only one Clark family in the entire county: William Clark. Except for a minor discrepancy (common in census returns) John G. Clark could fit nicely into this listing in the age grouping 10-15 (he was actually 17 years old according to all other census returns).
William Clark's Houshold
1 male aged 40-50 (William
2 males aged 10-15 (John G. and Samuel)
1 male aged 5-10 (William J.)
1 male less than 5 (Andrew J.)
1 female aged 30-40 (Sophia)
2 female aged 10-15 (Mary E. and Susan)
1 female aged 5-10 (Elizabeth)
1 female less than 5 (Martha)
"John G. Clark's youngest son was named Wesley. This name appears among the children of Samuel Clark, son of William and Sophia Dawson Clark.
"For these reasons it is believed that William and Sophia were the parents of John G. Clark who moved to Henry Co, TN.
"By the time of the 1850 census, another Clark family had moved into Trigg County. Warren Clark was born about 1793 in Virginia. He was married in Trigg County on 5 Jan 1843 to Rebecca Faughn. Since John was born about 1823 he could not have been a son of this couple. He might have been a son of Warren and a previous wife but this seems unlikely since in 1840 and 1830 Warren did not live in Trigg County.
"Another Clark family in Trigg County after 1850 was the family of Charles Robinson Clark who was born about 1828 and married Amanda Susan Cherry. C.R. Clark was the son of Fredrick H. Clark from Sussex County, VA. Frederick H. Clark came to Stewart County, Tennessee about 1840 and also lived in Christian and Trigg counties in Kentucky but no connection has yet been found to William Clark or to John G. Clark.
John Green Clark married Mary Ann Stagner, daughter of Talbert or Talbot Stagner and Melinda Mathis, 25 Jul 1842 in Trigg Co, Ky. Born about 1829 in Trigg Co, Ky. Died 6 Jul 1889 in Henry Co, TN

137. John William5 Stagner (James C.4, Nathan3, John Barney2, John Barney1) was born 1846 in District Nine, Benton Co, Tn, and died Bet. 1878 - 1879 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma City, Ok. He md Mary Jane McPherson 8 Oct 1868 in Benton Co, Tn, J.F.L. Melton, JP. She was born 1845 in Tn, and died Bet. 1878 - 1879 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma City, Ok.
Because of the early passing of my g-grandfather; John William Stagner and his wife, Mary Stagner (McPherson), not a whole lot is known about them! John was born 1846, in Tennessee. Mary was also born in Tennessee, 1845. John & Mary Jane McPherson where married 8 Oct 1868 in Benton Co., TN.
Mary J. McPherson was enumerated with her father, mother and her four brothers in the 1850 Fulton Co, Ky Federal Census; page 146B: #510/512. The census showed that their daughter, Mary age five years old. A very through search of the 1860 Federal Census for the McPherson Family was found in Camden, Benton Co, TN.
Mary McPherson (Griffin) may have died sometime between 1861 & 1862, because Cornelius McPherson was back in Benton Co, TN (1853). On Oct. 28, 1862 he married: Lidia Ann Akers; Elijah Alsup, JP. Cornelius was next located in Red River Co, TX on the 1870 Federal Census, Clarksville P.O., page 19B: #135/135. He arrived in Red River Co, TX in 1869 (Tax Roll, Reel #119401) and lived in that county until 1876 when he and Lidia moved to adjoining Delta County, Texas that borders Red River Co., to the South (Tax Roll,Reel #106002).
According to the 1900 Federal Census Records, Delta County, Texas James C. (Cornelius) Stagner, their first son was born Dec 1869, Benton Co, TN. John William & Mary moved from Benton Co., TN to Red River Co, TX in 1871 to be near Mary`s father; Cornelius McPherson (Tax Roll, Reel #119401; 1838-1881) who was living in Dist. No 1, and James William and family was also living in Dist. No 1, near Mary`s Parents.
John paid taxes on one horse, valued at $20.00 and $75.00 on miscellaneous items, for a total of value of $95.00. The following year (1872),John William was living in Dist. No. 1. near his father-in-law, Cornelius McPherson, under the name of Wm. Stagner, were he paid taxes on two horses, valued at $80.00 and in 1873 he was listed on the Tax Roll as; J.W. Stagner, were no taxes on personal property. On the 1874 Tax Roll his name was listed as; Wm. Stagner. Their son; Newton Edward Stagner was born in Red River County, Texas, March 1874. Newton and family was enumerated in the 1900 Clay Co, TX Federal Census (E.D. Dist. No. 15, sheet 18) where his age is listed as being born 1874, Texas. From the Tax Roll, Reel 106002, 1886-1902, Delta Co, TX (1890) Newton Edward was included on the tax records for that year; this would indicate that he would have been born in 1874 because you had to have been sixteen years old to be included on the Tax Rolls. It`s believed that John`s wife; Mary was staying with her father, Cornelius and her stepmother, Lidia when Newton Edward was born. Later on in 1874 John moved his family to adjoining Lamar County, Texas in Dist. No. 3. where he paid
taxes on two horses valued again at $80.00, and personal property valued at $37.00.
John William was not listed on the Tax Rolls for the years; 1875, 1876 and 1877, but was listed on the Tax Roll for 1878, Lamar Co., TX., (Reel #113902, 1878-1884 where he paid taxes on one horse and mule, valued at $10.00, two hogs valued at $3.00, and $22.00 on miscellaneous property.
Late in 1878 or early 1879, John William and wife, Mary left on a trip to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, left their two sons, James C. & Newton Edward with their grandfather; Cornelius McPherson, who moved from Red River Co, TX to Delta Co., Texas in 1876. John William and wife both died while on this trip to Oklahoma, while they were occupants in a Oklahoma City Hotel Fire.
From the 1880 Federal Census for Lamar Co., Texas, James C., the oldest son, born in 1870 was enumerated with the W.J. Howard household, E.D. No. 77, sheet 62., and John William was employed by Mr. Howard, who owned a number of acres and other property for that period.

Notes for Isaac Newton 'Newt' Stagner:
According to family history, sometime after their marriage on April 15, 1884, Belle and Newt left Benton Co, TN under questionable circumstances. Issac Newton is said to have "waylaid" and murdered Belle`s husband Mando on the James Know Wheatley home place in Big Sandy, TN.
In 1982, Deborah Faye Burdick (Baker) great-granddaughter of Issac Newton visited the old Wheatley home place. The late Griscol Wheatley, grandson of James Know Wheatley and then-resident of the home place confirmed family stories of the murder by indicating a large boulder by the side of the road leading into the property as the place where the killing had occurred.
A search of county circuit court records indicates that although Newt was fined repeatedly for packing a gun, no arrest for the Butler murder was ever made. Records do indicate that Newt had borrowed money from Butler.
In 1884/1885 Issac Newton and Belle left baby Claudia behind in Benton Co, TN with Bell Hawkins, a relative and journeyed to McKinney, TX where they joined Hall cousins from Benton Co. They were warned to never again return to TN.
For the past fifty years of their lives, Newt and Belle Stagner farmed peacefully outside the town of Celina, in Collin Co, TX. There, untouched by scandal, they were well-loved and respected members of their church and community.
Belle as remembered by her daughter-in-law as tight fisted and Newt was a gentle, lovable old man by his granddaughter, and mother, Faye Stagner Baker. Deborah Faye Contributed this information, taken from Family History.
In June, 2000 Ramon Lindsy and I went out to this Large Rock, located on th Morris/ Wheatley Road and looked where the shooting alleged to have happened. This large boulder was almost covered with soil that washed down from the cliffs above.

A Brief History Of Belle Stagner
By Nell Morisette, Corespondent and News Tribune Special Columnist, Family History
As told by Linda Stockdale and Capt. Roy Hall
Linda Stockdale is a distant relative of Belle
Belle Donia Wheatley was a daughter of Judge and State Legislator James Knox Wheatley and Mahulda Jane Hall.
Belle first married James Butler. Her second marriage was to Isaac Newton Stagner, who had been married to Belle`s sister. They lived in Big Sandy.
In 1884/1885 Belle and Newt left Benton County and went of McKinney, TX. Newt and Belle had one daughter and four sons. Their daughter, Claudia was born in February 1883 and was too young to make the trip to Texas so Newt & Belle left Claudia with Bell Hawkins, a close relative of Belle`s.
The boys helped their father doing a full man`s work every day on the farm. They were good people, hard working, and fun loving, which are attributes of nearly all people who came from Tennessee in the old day. Belle was a rather smallish woman, but like all pioneer women, she had iron in her Vines. The whole family was always pulling pranks on each other.
In those days everyone on the farm cooked on wood stoves, so it was customary to haul wood from the woods in long poles and then cut it into stove length as needed. This was usually done in the early morning, by the men, before going to the field.
Belle, like many women, had a problem getting dinner when the men went off and forgot to cut the wood. She would have to pick up chips and gather up corn cobs from the farm yard to cook dinner.
One day she rung the bell, calling the men from the field for their mid-day meal. Then she went back and sat down by the kitchen stove. Newt and the boys William, Scott, Webb and Porter stormed in on the back porch, washing their hands and faces with good nature kidding, looking forward to the good dinner Belle always had ready for them. It was ready but when they sat down at the table a silence spread over the room.
The whole dinner was on the table uncooked. The biscuits were in the dough stage, the dry beans were in their big bowl, a chunk of raw beef was on the platter, a dewberry cobbler was in its regular dish with the ripe berries showing through the dough dumplings, and a pan of cornbread ready for baking was on the stove. Not a word was said. Finally Newt picked up his cut, went to the stove and poured out some coffie from the pot. It came out almost a clear liquid. He looked down at Belle, who was darning a sock. "What`s the matter Belle?" he asked, his eyes crinkling.
"No corn cobs, no, chips. no wood. no cooked dinner." She went on working on the socks. Newt and the boys, shouting and laughing, hustled out and got wood. This ended one problem in the Stagner household.
Belle Stagner had another problem which had to do with her men folks. In those days every good housekeeper prided herself that she could keep a spotlessly clean house and perfectly made-up beds. The feather beds and folster pillows were made up just so, so and not to be wallowed on.
Belle`s men folks tired and full of dinner, and catching her out of the bedrooms, would flop down on the beds for a brief rest before going back out to the fields. She would berate and chase them off. and being good natured folks they`d go of laughing at her ranting. Finally she decided to end this for once and all. And she did!
One morning, when they were all in the field, she went down on the branch and cut a dozen or so of long switches that were full of thorns. She stripped the bed and spread the switches evenly over the beds. Placing a quilt on top of them , she spread the counterpanes over the quilt, and went on gitting dinner.
When Newt and the boys had finished dinner she told them she had to go up to Frank Hunn`s for a minute, but would be back about the time they went back to the fields. Belle had planned her strategy carefully. For several days before this she had not bothered the men about lolling oh her beds, and in going away from the house this would give them the opportunity to loll as much as they wished.
Newt went out and stretched on the Porch, but not the boys. They made for the beds. Newt said afterward that so many bad words, yauling, and moans had never before echoed through the Stagner household. The quilt prevented the thorns from penetrating so far to cause serious injuries, but deep enough to let the boys know, for all time, that the beds were for sleeping on at night, and not for wallowing on in Belle Stagner`s house.
Issac Newton Stagner died in 2 January 1941. Belle Donia Stagner died 26 September 1934 in Celina, Collin Co, TX.
