Who we are . . .
The Latin American Community Association [LACA] was established in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in September of 2000 in response to a plea from Salvadoran national, now a Canadian citizen, Juan Melendez who suffered a severe beating during and following arrest by Calgary Police Service plainclothes and uniformed officers. LACA sees this case as the flash point for advocating accountability into the hands of police forces and judicial systems.
What we do . . .
LACA's mandate is to advocate and protect the best interests of Latin American nationals living in Calgary, Alberta regardless of their place of birth, political, or religious beliefs. To do so we directly confront ultimate decision makers to account for abuse of power by their underlings. We do so in the full glare of media publicity with the full intent of effecting fundamental change directed from the high political level .
Our Affiliates . . .
The Latin American Community Association is affiliated with the Calgary Coalition for Social Justice made up of several organizations, including the Calgary & District Labour Council, advocating changes to Alberta's criminal justice system.
