Bruno: Hey, is pouting any way to celebrate your rescue from the county
Katie: I think I told you thank you, Bruno. About ten times last night and ten times today and -- thank you so much for helping me with the plane situation.
Bruno: Hey. Where's that Tuscan smile? You know, the charm that made me fall head over heels with you the first night I met you?
Katie: In your money clip, I suppose, now that you "own" me.
Bruno: Katie, I shouldn't have said "own." I didn't mean it literally.
Katie: How would I know that, Bruno? I don't know you at all.
Bruno: Well, that's what St. Maarten was supposed to be for. Look, if you're gonna sit there with that face, everybody's gonna wonder why I can't make my woman happy. That does bad things for a man's ego. So could you please make an effort?
Katie: I'm trying. But there's only one man in this entire world that I have loved enough to turn myself inside out for.
Bruno: Hey, I thought we agreed that you weren't gonna get moody over Simon anymore he's gone, Katie.
Katie: Yeah. Forever, probably. So please forgive me if it takes me a little time to get used to the fact that my life is being flushed down the tubes.
Craig's Suite
Craig:Well, no sooner do I pry them from the nest than back they fly.
Simon: Where's Katie? I need to talk to her.
Craig: What? Not even a "hello, Craig. Thanks for not changing the lock"?
Simon: I need to see her, Craig.
Craig: Well, I hate to be the one to tell you like this, Simon. But you're too late.
Java Underground
Bruno: My uncle just came over from Italy, visiting the rest of the family back in jersey. And you know what he likes to say? "If life tosses you lemons, you make limonata."
Katie: What?
Bruno: Lemonade.
Katie: What does that have to do with me?
Bruno: Katie, you're not making the best of a bad situation. So your circumstances have changed. Change can be a good thing, right? Listen -- you know how many show girls slipped me their numbers the night I met you?
Katie: Dozens, I'm sure.
Bruno: Yeah. They follow me from Atlantic City to Vegas, begging --begging -- for a piece of what I'm giving you. My attention.
Katie: I am sure you are just like catnip for all those ladies. I'm just not one of them.
Bonnie: Okay, drinks? Food? Attitude adjustment?
Bruno: I'll have a scotch on the rocks. And not in a wine glass, if you will, please.
Bonnie: Of course. I can tell you're the discriminating type. And what about you, bright eyes?
Katie: She will have a champagne cocktail, please.
Bonnie: I wasn't asking the discriminating gentleman. I was asking the lady.
Katie: I'll have a ginger ale, please.
Bruno: Only a ginger ale? Come on, Katie. Live a little.
Katie: Okay. Two ginger ales. Thanks.
Bonnie: Sure!
Bruno: Look -- your old man walked out on you. I understand you're blue. All right? But from what I can see, he wasn't making you very happy, anyway. Am I right?
Katie: Yeah, I guess you're right.
Bruno: In fact, he never even said he loved you. So let's stop playing games.
Katie: What games?
Bruno: Stop acting like I am some second-rate stand-in or -
Katie: Or? Or what? Or you'll kill me?
[Bonnie returns with their drinks and overhears Katie's comments]
Katie: Or what, Bruno? Cement shoes? A dip in the jersey marsh?
Bonnie: So are you gonna answer the lady or what?
Bruno: She's -- she's kidding. Tell the waitress you're joking. Katie, what are you doing?
Katie: Well, you're the one who said you own me. I wanna know exactly what that means.
Bruno: I already told you. "Own" was a poor choice of words. I meant -- I meant you're mine.
Katie: See?
Bruno: "Mine" as in my lady, my girl. I thought I was yours, as in your guy.
Katie: Don't you think that's a little premature?
Bruno: Wasn't stomping grapes fun? Buying designer clothes? How do go from that to me killing you?
Katie: Well, let me put it this way, Bruno. You're the kind of guy who gets what he wants when he wants. You shoveled out a lot of money to help me in a bad situation. And you obviously want something in return.
Bruno: Yeah, Katie, I want you. The fun you.
Katie: Yeah, whatever. What I'm saying is we have a deal, right? Some sort of deal?
Bruno: Yeah. What we have is the oldest deal in the world.
Katie: And what is to stop me from just walking out on it? Or just walking out on you?
Java Underground Bar
Bonnie: Okay, so I typically don't like to butt into your clientele's business, especially since it's so boring. But I thought you should know -- the cute little couple over there at the back table?
Isaac: She's married to a friend of mine. What about 'em?
Bonnie: Yeah, well, blondie just asked musclehead if he planned to kill her. And since he didn't say no, well, I just thought you should know. Just in case you have a policy against murder.
Craig's Suite
Simon: Too late for what? Didn't she come back from St. Maarten?
Craig: Oh, she's back. And in rare form, too.
Simon: What do you mean?
Craig: Well, there are certain details a sister doesn't really give a brother. You know, Simon. But there is a certain glow.
Simon: Please, just -- just get to the point.
Craig: Well, she's happy, man, you know? She's constantly chirping about -- what's his name?
Simon: Bruno?
Craig: Yeah! "Bruno this, Bruno that." Bruno's boat, Bruno's island house. I think he has a house on every sandbar.
Simon: Look, I know all about him. I know where Katie went. I just -- please, just tell me, where is she now?
Craig: I don't know. Probably somewhere in the Italian Alps.
Simon: All right. So I guess I blew it, huh?
Craig: Pretty much.
Simon: Oh, come on. She can't be serious about this guy, can she?
Craig: You forbade her to be serious about you. So why shouldn't she make a life on the arm of some high roller? Why do you care?
Simon: Well, I don't want her to get hurt, do I?
Craig: She's a big girl.
Simon: And I --
Craig: You what? You don't have to be coy. I can take it. You what?
Simon: I can't believe I'm telling you, but -- and I love her. Yes.
Craig: You love her?
Simon: Yes. She's infuriating. She's frustrating. She's nothing but trouble but, yes, I do. I -- I love her.
Craig: I know what you mean about all of that. But don't you think you should have told it to her face?
Simon: I don't know. I mean, sometimes I knew it, I guess. But it didn't really hit home until I was somewhere else. Without her.
Craig: Go and find her.
Simon: I don't know to start.
Craig: Try Margo. She knows everything.
Oakdale Police Station
Margo: Simon, I thought you would've been long gone.
Simon: Well, I'm back. I'm looking for Katie. Have you heard from her?
Margo: Well, yeah, I had her arrested yesterday.
Simon: What?!
Margo: Grand theft. A rented plane.
Simon: Ah -- look, I told her to take care of that or she'd be in all sorts of trouble.
Margo: Yeah, Katie always listens to everything we say.
Simon: Can I talk to her?
Margo: Well, if you think she's down in her cell, no, she's not.
Simon: So where is she?
Margo: Some guy came by in a very expensive Italian suit, made a few calls and all charges were dropped. So my guess is she's with him.
Simon: Craig was right. So what? Has she fallen for this guy or --
Margo: No, I don't think "fallen" is quite the word. But any guy comes by and shells out $250,000 has a certain appeal to a lady in distress.
Simon: Do you know where they were going?
Margo: No, they didn't say. But from the looks of this guy, he isn't turn gonna down any game in town. So, not that you heard it from me, but I'd check the back room at Java.
Simon: All right, thanks, Margo. I've gotta get to Katie before she does something really crazy.
Margo: You're about 20 years too late.
Java Underground
Katie: So, Bruno, what are you gonna do to make me stay here?
Bruno: What do you want me to say, Katie? We had an arrangement. Do you need me to spell it out for you?
Katie: Nothing like talking things out, right?
Bruno: Okay. I take care of you. I show you the world. I make sure you're well fed. I make sure you're happy, and I buy you all the clothes you want. You? You take care of me. You show up gorgeous with that beautiful smile. And you pay lots of attention to me. Is that clear enough?
Katie: Mm. What if I change my mind? What if I say, "Bruno, you know what? I'm leaving you right here, right now.
Bruno: I wouldn't do that if I were you.
Isaac: Is there a problem over here?
Bruno: No. No, I don't think so. Are we having a problem, Katie?
Katie: No. No. No, everything's fine.
Isaac: Make sure it stays that way.
Bruno: Let's get something straight -- threats? Threats are for weak men. I don't make them. Okay? So before you think about reneging on your deal, understand that I will do whatever it takes to make sure it's secure. Okay?
Katie: Okay.
Bruno: You see? We've talked things out.
Java Underground Bar
Isaac: Hey, Simon. How you doing, man?
Simon: Good.
Isaac: I thought you left Oakdale.
Simon: I'm looking for Katie. I thought she might be here. You haven't seen her, have you?
Isaac: I'm not so sure about the guy she's with, though.
Simon: I met him. I don't like him.
Java Underground
Bruno: Katie, I wanna take care of you. I mean, so bad? Is there anybody else that wants to do that for you?
Katie: No, I guess not.
Bruno: Then don't think so much. Let it happen. What have you got to lose?
Katie: Nothing, I guess.
Java Underground Bard
Simon: [watching Bruno move in on Katie] I am too late.
Java Underground
Bruno: [kisses Katie] That wasn't so bad, was it?
Katie: No, it was great.
Bruno: Oh, come on, Katie. We're gonna have to work on that enthusiasm of yours.
Craig: Katie?! Can you help me with these cufflinks? Look at you. Hey!
Simon: Lily.
Katie: You came back.
Simon: Rose, Rose, I need to talk to you second.
Margo: Simon what are you doing here? Please just tell me it's a visit, okay?
Katie: Mm, delicious. You should try some.
Simon: I saw Katie at Jake and Molly's wedding, all right? At first, she kissed me. I mean, she really kissed me. It was obvious that she was thrilled to see me. And then Bruno says one word to her, and she shuts down. She starts pushing me away.
Bruno: Listen, Katie -- imagine how I feel chasing you, and all I get in return is a girl that blows hot and cold. You know, you're wafflin' so much, I feel like I'm in the house of pancakes.
Simon: So is Katie back yet?
Katie: Hi. My name is Katie Peretti Frasier, and I seem to be in a bit of trouble. I was wondering if you are offering sanctuary tonight?
Margo: Man, Simon, you must have broken speed records to get down here.
Nun: May I help you with something?
[Doorbell rings]
10-02-01 ... Diamond's Aren't This Girl's Best Friend
Katie: Bruno bought it for me. He wants to show me off at Jake and Molly's wedding.
Craig: Molly invited you to the wedding?
Katie: Yeah, can you believe it? She said if it weren't for all the rotten things I did to her, she never would've found Jake.
Craig: I wish I would have known. You would have saved me a tea set, and we could have gone together.
Katie: Oh, no, we couldn't have. I belong to Bruno now.
Craig: You gave up on Simon?
Katie: Simon's gone.
Craig: Oh, really? He was here yesterday. I spoke to him.
Katie: Simon's here?
Craig: And hot on your trail. I told him all about Bruno.
Katie: You told Simon that Bruno and I were an item?
Craig: Hey, it worked. Simon went running out of here, green with jealousy.
Katie: Oh, please don't tell me you sent him to Java.
Craig: Well, I may have mentioned --
Katie: That means he saw me kiss Bruno!
Craig: Well, that was careless of you.
Katie: Me? You're the one with the loose lips. Oh!
Craig: I've never received any complaints before.
[Knock at door.]
Katie: Oh, that could be Simon. Keep you mouth shut.
Bruno: Bellissima. For you.
Katie: Thanks. Jewelry.
Bruno: We gotta get that sparkle back, right, Craig?
Craig: Be good to her, Bruno.
Bruno: Of course. She's my girl.
Craig: I'll see you at the wedding.
Bruno: So, have you heard from that husband of yours lately?
Katie: Why?
Bruno: I just can't believe anybody'd walk out on you. Not that I'm complaining. If he were still around, I'd have to get rid of him.
Katie: What do you mean, "get rid of him"?
Bruno: Katie, I'm crazy about you. Don't you know that yet? I mean, it's not every day I drop a quarter mill on a girl I just met.
Katie: You don't have to remind me.
Bruno: So how about, after this wedding, you and I have our own little honeymoon?
Walsh Garden
Lucinda: Ah, Simon. Will you tell this wonderful warrior that she can finally afford to relax?
Lily: It's good to see you.
Simon: Actually, I came to say good-bye.
Lily: Last time I talked to you, it sounded like you were giving the marriage a real chance.
Simon: Yeah, well, it seems that our Katie's found another guy.
Lily: Really?
Simon: Yeah.
Lily: I don't believe it.
Simon: Yeah, neither could I. Some friend of Rose's. He's rich. He's whatever. He's --
Lily: I'm sure, if you crooked your little finger, she would come running.
Simon: I'm no good for her, Lily. She wants the whole nine yards. And I've never made a commitment that I couldn't break.
Lily: You never broke any promise you made me. Don't sell yourself short.
Simon: Look, I'm just gonna go congratulate the groom and just get outta here.
Lily: Okay.
Bruno: Hey, are you okay?
Katie: Oh, I just kind of have a headache.
Bruno: Take an aspirin.
Katie: I will. But I was thinking I'm gonna feel a lot better if we could just go home after the ceremony.
Bruno: Let's talk about this later -- in private?
Jake: Hey, hey, hey.
Simon: Hey.
Jake: Taking off on me?
Simon: No, of course not. I'm gonna stick around until you do the deed.
Jake: You are gonna stick around. You are gonna dance with Molly. And then maybe we'll let you leave. Just maybe.
Simon: Sure thing. Hey. Good luck, man.
Katie: [Looks around and catches sight of Simon.] Simon! Excuse me.
10-03-01 ... Reunited and it Feels So Good ... Er, Hold That Thought
Simon: I couldn't stay away from you, Katie.
Katie: You could've figured that out sooner.
Simon: It's too late, right? You've moved on, haven't you?
Katie: Moved on? Is that what my louse of a brother told you?
Simon: He said that you and this Bruno guy were starry-eyed. Are you? Are you really happy with this moron?
Bruno: She's happy as a clam. Maybe you'd better rethink who you're calling a moron, moron.
Katie: Don't get upset, Bruno. Okay? He's still my husband, and I have a right to talk him.
Bruno: Go ahead. Say what you have to say. As long as it's good-bye. Your wife and me, we have a wedding to attend. The ceremony's already started.
Katie: Why don't you go without me?
Bruno: No.
Katie: They're not gonna miss me.
Bruno: That would be rude.
Katie: Those people don't even like me.
Bruno: Maybe because you do strange things that you're gonna regret. It's time to make some changes.
Katie: Well, Bruno, it has been so lovely knowing you but, as you can see, my husband's come back for me, so --
Bruno: Katie, the kind of marriage you had means nothing. The agreement between you and I means everything.
Katie: Listen, I promise that I will pay you back every cent of the $248,000 that I owe you.
Bruno: $248,602.22. But who's counting? The airplane company's happy, and so am I. I don't care about the money.
Katie: You don't care about me. There are plenty of girls out there who are smarter and prettier and more fun than I am, who'd really appreciate what you have to offer.
Bruno: And I've had them all. But not you. You're my unobtainable little object.
Katie: Really? Well, I don't think that's gonna cut the ice with my husband.
Bruno: That's not a problem. I'll just have a nice, long talk with him.
Katie: I don't have long. Bruno's at the bar. He's gonna come looking for me.
Simon: Katie, what is going on?
Katie: Say it again.
Simon: Say what? What?
Katie: That you came back for me.
Simon: I came back for you. I got to Tahiti, and I realized without you, everything's is a huge bore.
Katie: I could've told you that! I did tell you that a million times. You just wouldn't listen. And now everything is so messed up. [ Katie grabs Simon and pulls him into a kiss ]
Bruno: There you are, Katie. Saying good-bye again don't you just love her long good-byes?
Simon: It doesn't look like good-bye, now, does it?
Bruno: No? First you tell me to get you a drink, and now you don't want it? You have to make up your mind, honeybun.
Simon: Don't call her that.
Katie: Come on, Bruno. Let's go.
Bruno: Whatever you say, honeybun.
Katie: No, don't, don't, don't, Simon! I'm with Bruno now.
Simon: What? What are you talking about?
Bruno: You heard the lady. She knows exactly what she's saying and exactly what she's doing.
Walsh Garden
Rose: Hey! What are you still doing here? I thought you were snorkeling in the South Seas.
Simon: Yeah, well, maybe I should've stayed.
Rose: Oh, Katie and Bruno still an item?
Simon: Well, he seems to think so, yes.
Rose: What does Katie think?
Simon: She's not making any sense at all.
Rose: Aw. I thought that was part of her charm.
Simon: No. Yes, it is. But this time, she's -- she's acting more weird than normal, if that's possible. Look, tell me -- I just need to know. Is this guy gonna be good to her?
Rose: You're really worried about her, huh?
Simon: Look, do me a favor, please? Can you take your old pal Bruno and check out the billiard room or something?
Rose: Oh.
Simon: I need to talk to Katie privately.
Rose: Yeah. Got nothing else to do.
Simon: Good, thanks. Appreciate it. Thanks.
Bruno: Something on your mind?
Katie: That's a new and interesting accessory. It's not loaded, is it?
Bruno: What good would it be if it wasn't loaded?
Katie: Why do you need a gun?
Bruno: I got this gun for tricky situations.
Katie: Like what?
Bruno: Like that airplane rental company that was hassling you.
Katie: I thought you paid those people. You didn't hurt anyone, did you?
Rose: Excuse I need to talk to you for a minute. You don't mind, do you? [ Rose escorts Bruno off, so that Simon can have a moment with Katie ]
Katie: Stop bothering me, Simon. I told you it was over between us. Just leave, okay? How many times do I have to tell you?
Simon: Is that the truth? Is it? Is that -- this is what you really want?
Katie: Bruno is very good to me. All right? So just --
Simon: Have a nice life. [ Simon leaves ]
Bruno: Honey bunny. I think we've had enough of this wedding. What do you say we go home and get some relaxation?
Katie: Whatever you say, Bruno.
10-05-01 ... On the Run for True Love's Sake
Simon: No, I need your help.
Margo: Well, listen, if it's about the shooting at Lucinda's, I --
Simon: It's not. I heard about that, though. Luke and Lily?
Margo: They're fine. They're fine. Thanks to Jack. We're taking his statement now.
Simon: Right. I hear he's a pretty darned good shot.
Margo: Yeah. Well, I'll relay the message.
Simon: Look, I'm here on another matter.
Margo: All right, unless it's life and death --
Simon: It is, Margo. It is.
Margo: Whose?
Simon: Katie's.
Craig's Suite
Bruno: You know, I -- I can't figure you out. At the wedding, you were so sick you wanted to come home. And now you got an appetite that could choke a horse.
Katie: Simon says I'm as fickle as the weather. Pickle?
Bruno: I'll pass. Where do you put it all?
Katie: Simon says I'm not happy unless my mouth is occupied. Talking, laughing, eating, drinking. Kissing. I'm sorry, I'm okay.
Bruno: Are you sure?
Katie: Mm-hmm.
Bruno: I'd offer you some vino, but too many unknown factors. Will she get burst into tears again? Will she remember? Will she forget?
Katie: Only one way to find out.
Bruno: No. No, you can leave that there. That's fine. It's time for dessert.
Katie: Simon says --
Bruno: I've had enough of "Simon Says" for a few hundred years. Okay? You want to play games? I got games two people can play. We can play 'em all night long, Katie.
Oakdale Police Station
Margo: Well, honestly, what do you expect her to do? Give her a little credit for moving on.
Simon: No, I know what moving on looks like, Margo. This isn't moving on. I mean, if you'd just seen the way her face lit up when she saw me. And then Bruno steps, and the whole life just drains out of her.
Margo: Well, Katie's the Queen of erratic behavior. And, look, these torches don't stay lit forever.
Simon: She's afraid of him. Margo, he's obviously made some kind of threats. Look, if Katie has moved on to greener pastures, then so be it. I will believe her. Only if she tells me face-to-face when he's not around.
Margo: Well, what do you want me to do?
Simon: I want you to find out everything you can about this Bruno Portolano.
Margo: Okay, Portolano. I'll see what I can do.
Craig's Suite
Katie: Pancakes. That's what I want.
Bruno: No. No food. Focus on us. Do we understand each other?
Katie: What's to understand?
Bruno: You're distracted, Katie. And don't tell me it's 'cause you're craving hot fudge. Okay? If you're thinking about that pathetic husband of yours, I'm gonna have to do something about it.
Katie: No, no. Really, you don't.
Bruno: Yeah? I got a sure-fire way to clear your mind.
Katie: You know what? I have a better way to clear my mind. How about a nice, long, luxurious bubble bath?
Bruno: Now you're talking.
Katie: You know what? Actually, that will be a solo thing, 'cause I'm kinda shy.
Bruno: Wait a second. This coming from a girl who stomped grapes wearing next to nothing? Katie, I'll make you unshy. You belong to me now. Okay? It's time you learned that.
Katie: Yeah, you're right. You are right. So I'm gonna run to my suite and get a nightie for after the bath.
Bruno: Yeah? Well, I hope they look good in a pile on the floor, 'cause that's where they're gonna end up.
Katie: Uh -- I'll be right back before you know it.
Bruno: I don't think so. And let you out of my sight for even a second? No way.
Bruno: Katie, what -- what is all that?
Katie: My clothes.
Bruno: I thought some lingerie and unmentionables.
Katie: Well, I realized that maybe it's time to move out -- pack up and move out, because every time I walk into this suite, I risk running into -- the man whose name I dare not mention. So when he sees that I've moved out, he'll realize that our marriage doesn't mean anything, and that now I belong to you.
Bruno: You belong to me. You belong to me. With those four words, a whole new life is gonna open up for you. We're gonna have a blast, just like we did in the beginning.
Katie: I can barely wait.
Bruno: So what do you say we slip into that bubble bath now?
Katie: You know what? I'll tell you what. You go and get everything all warm and frothy, and I'll go get the rest of my stuff.
Bruno: Can I give you -- can I give you a hand?
Katie: No, no. I got it. Unmentionables. I'll be back in two shakes of a lamb's tail.
Bruno: Don't take too long.
[ Bruno leaves the Suite, while Katie goes to her room. She re-emerges with her rabbit, Snickers ]
Katie: You ready for the adventure of a lifetime, Snickers? That's right, this one's big -- bigger than when you and I got rescued together, bigger than when you had to rely on the hotel staff and Craig for your sustenance while I was in Malta. This time, we are really running for our lives. I know, I don't want to leave either. But I can't control Bruno for much longer. I mean, don't get me wrong. He is attractive. He's quite gorgeous, actually, and fun, when he keeps his gun and his other things in his pocket. But he's no Simon. Simon, who came back to Oakdale for me. Simon, who was just about to say those three words that I've been dying to hear him say. But it wouldn't be worth hearing him say them if the next thing I hear was Bruno pumping six rounds of ammunition into Simon's chest. We gotta leave. We gotta get out of here. We have to. Are you ready? All right. Good-bye, Simon. Wherever you are. [Katie takes her packed bags and her rabbit and leaves through the back door. Meanwhile Simon comes in the front door.]
Simon: Katie? Katie, you home?
Bruno: Katie, baby. I found a bottle of bubbly to go with our bubbles. Bottoms up, joy toy. Katie?
Simon: What are you doing here? And what have you done with my wife?
Simon: Katie's left. She's gone.
Bruno: Yeah, she's gone from you, but not gone from me.
Simon: No, she's gone for good.
Bruno: How do you know that?
Simon: Well, man, she's taken her rabbit, hasn't she? So, what did you do to frighten her so badly?
Bruno: I showed her some affection, that's it. And if Katie has run away, which she hasn't, it's only because she's been treated so bad, she doesn't know when she's got it good. What you need to understand is that she's with me now. So deal with it.
Katie: So what are you saying? She's yours? Is that it?
Bruno: Yeah, she belongs to me -- Katie's words.
Simon: Oh, right. Why don't you just turn around? I want to see the matching tattoos.
Bruno: Excuse me. I'm gonna leave now. I'm gonna get in that nice, hot bubble bath Katie asked me to get ready for us. Because here's my philosophy. You leave her alone, she'll come home, wagging that adorable little tail behind her.
Simon: Wait, Bruno. You forgot something. [ Simon decks Bruno with one punch ]
Bruno: You lousy son of a --
Craig: Ah, gentlemen? Something to do with Katie? Don't let me interfere.
Bruno: Where do you think you're going?
Simon: To find my wife.
10-08-01 ... The Return of Sister Kathryn?
Craig: Simon, no luck?
Simon: No. No, I think she packed everything and left. Even Snickers.
Margo: Snickers?
Simon: Yeah, Snickers, her pet rabbit.
Craig: Ah, hare freight!
Margo: Well, did she leave alone or with this Bruno guy?
Simon: I really don't know, but I'm pretty sure it was alone.
Margo: All right. Well, why don't you let me track him down? And I'll ask some questions.
[Margo's Cell Phone Ringing]
Craig: Margo, what's all the fuss about? I've met the guy. He seems harmless enough. Huh? Simon, Bruno may have picked up a few twitches along the way, but I don't think he's a threat.
Margo: Okay, thanks. That was my contact on the East coast. Seems this Portolano has been known to have mob ties in New Jersey.
Simon: So tell me again, Craig, how harmless this guy is?
Margo: You know what, Simon? This guy could be dangerous. I don't want to have to worry about Katie and you. So why don't you let me put somebody on it, and I'll let you know how it shakes out, okay?
Simon: Fine.
Craig: It never ends, does it, Margo?
Margo: What, dealing with our family?
Craig: I meant your job.
Margo: It's the same difference.
[ Craig chuckles, and Margo lets herself out ]
Craig: Ah, Simon! Katie's gets in trouble on an hourly basis. She'll be all right.
Simon: She'd be still stuck on that island, Craig, if I'd listened to you.
Craig: Trust me on this -- I know women.
Simon: Oh, spare me, please. Beating a murder rap brought by your own wife is not really my idea of success with women.
Craig: All I'm saying is listen to me now. I won't steer you wrong.
Simon: You're saying you know something that I don't? Because if you do, Craig, you'd better come clean. 'Cause I'm kind of in the mood to beat it out of you.
[Craig laughs]
Craig: Simon, this thing with Bruno isn't real. It's just a plan to make you jealous. And, Simon, it seems to have worked.
Craig: Katie and I made a deal to stop chasing amour, concentrate on something else in life.
Simon: So what are you saying, that Bruno was Katie's "something else"?
Craig: She wanted to make you jealous, Simon. But you know you had her in your pocket the whole time, didn't you?
Simon: Well, things have definitely changed between us since Malta, or so I thought. But she seems to be getting in over her head with this guy, Bruno.
Craig: She said he was a tad possessive, but then she is a tad dramatic, huh?
Simon: Look, I think it's a little more serious than that, Craig. When I saw her at the wedding, she practically threw herself at me. And then, Bruno shows up, and she goes ice cold. Look, I'm pretty sure that she's afraid of what he might do.
Craig: You really think she's afraid he might hurt her?
Simon: Maybe, but now that I think about it, maybe she's more afraid of what he might do to me.
Margo: We have no evidence that Bruno has Katie or even if she went with him against her will.
Simon: Come on, Margo. Of course he forced her to go!
Craig: Oh, bucko, Katie's a very resourceful woman. I know this is a very foreign concept, Simon, but trust your wife. Katie will find a way out of this mess. She always does.
Outside a Convent
10-15-01 ... A White Picket Fence, a Bunny Named Snickers and Guacamole on the Host
Simon: I'm just worried sick about Katie. Have you found out anything about this Bruno?
Margo: Yeah. Well, I got a call from a nun. A Sister Mary Bastalista. This is where Katie is.
Simon: What, a convent?
Margo: Yeah. Katie asked the nuns for sanctuary.
Simon: That's because she feels threatened. That's why. I've got to get to her before this Bruno guy does.
Margo: Hey, hey, hey, hey. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Now that we know that she's okay for the meantime --
Simon: Margo, I really have to --
Margo: Listen -- you asked me to check out this Bruno guy and I did. And now, I have some questions for you.
Margo: Look, you and I both know that Katie can be a little out there.
Simon: Yes, she is.
Margo: And she's my little sister and I love her.
Simon: I know that. And you have been a big help. And I mean it, thank you.
Margo: Well, now, you can be an even bigger help. You know why she took off, don't you?
Simon: Yes. Because of me. I know, I messed up. And I really -- I'm gonna make it up to her.
Margo: I know. And I'm not trying to guilt-trip you. Katie's a handful, and I know it. But when she comes back, I would like her life to be different.
Simon: And it will be. It will.
Margo: So you'll be truthful with her?
Simon: Mm-hmm.
Margo: Then go and find her, and you need to promise me that you'll be straight with her. Because, Simon, she is in love with you.
Simon: I know.
Margo: And you know that she never would've gotten messed up with this Bruno guy if she hadn't been wanting to prove something to you.
Simon: I know, I know. And now, I know what I have to say to her. I do.
Margo: Yeah. What you should have said months ago, that the two of you never should have staged this wedding just so you could stay in the country.
Simon: Yes. It was wrong. I know.
Margo: All right. Then you can make it right. Go and you find her and you convince her that this ridiculous marriage is over, and I know it'll be painful for her to hear, but in the long run she'll be better off. What?
Simon: I don't want to end it.
Margo: What?
Simon: Yeah. I -- I love Katie, and I want to give it a shot.
Margo: What?
Simon: Yes. Believe me, it took me long enough to realize it myself.
Margo: Simon, if you don't end this now, you're gonna be spending the rest of your life with her.
Simon: I know.
Margo: Simon, the rest of your life.
Simon: Yes!
Margo: No, let me be very clear with you, Simon. If you go and you get her and you tell her that you don't wanna split up, then you get ready for 50 or 60 years of Katie. And I'm talkin' a house and kids and a white-picket fence, and possibly a dog and a bunny. And if, down the road, you do want to break up with her, she will hunt you down and make your life miserable. And, quite frankly, I'll help her. So you be clear with yourself, Simon, and Katie.
Simon: I will be. I wanna go get her.
Margo: Okay. The convent is just out past Luther's Corners. And these are the directions.
Simon: Thank you. I really mean it. Thank you.
Convent
Simon: Yes, I'm here to see Mother Superior. It's about a visitor who came to your convent.
Nun: And the visitor's name?
Simon: It's actually my wife. Katie Peretti Frasier?
Nun: Yes. You will have to see the Reverend Mother, Sister Mary.
Simon: Well, is she gonna be much longer?
Nun: I don't think so. She's in with the other gentleman.
Simon: Who's that? How did you get here?
Bruno: I got my ways -- just like you, it seems.
Simon: I'm sorry, Mother Superior. You cannot let this guy near my wife, Katie!
Sister Mary: I'm afraid that's irrelevant, gentlemen. Katie is gone.
Simon: Excuse me, what do you mean, Katie is gone?
Sister Mary: I'm sorry. I did not mean to seem so dire. What I meant to say is Katie has left the convent. She has gone away, moved on, vamoosed.
Simon: Why? Why? Did you let this guy here near her or what?
Bruno: Wait just a minute. Come on.
Sister Mary: She told one of the sisters that she had not yet finished her quest for tranquility -- her spiritual journey.
Simon: And do you know where this spiritual journey was taking her?
Sister Mary: No. I have no idea.
Simon: Right. And you just let her leave? Like that?
Sister Mary: Well, to be perfectly honest, Mr. -- ?
Simon: Frasier. I'm her husband, as I mentioned to the sister right here.
Sister Mary: Oh, I see. Well, to be perfectly honest, Mr. Frasier, your wife's stay with us has been a bit of a nightmare.
Bruno: Ah, that's just because you don't understand --
Simon: What are you even doing -- will you just shut -- I'm sorry. I'm very sorry. Please, can you explain to me what actually happened?
Sister Mary: Well, first of all, she was completely unable to keep the vow of silence at meals.
Bruno: That's my little songbird.
Sister Mary: Yes, and when it was her turn to lead the evening prayers, she offered makeover tips for those confined to black and white wardrobes. She also suggested that we should petition the "Popester," as she referred to our Holy Father, about "that chastity thing." She said, and I quote, "poverty and obedience are enough already!" After one week with her, three -- three -- of our sisters have given over their vocations entirely!
Simon: Well, she's very, extremely sweet girl once you get to know her. And helpful, too, yes.
Sister Mary: Oh, yes, yes, I know. When she receives the sacrament of the Holy Communion, she told us that the host would go down easier with guacamole.
Simon: Well, that's a good point. I'm sorry -- if you weren't gonna keep her here safely in this sanctuary, why did you call Margo Hughes?
Sister Mary: Her sister?
Simon: Yes.
Sister Mary: Yes, yes. Well, to be perfectly honest, we were desperate. And Ms. Hughes said that a gentleman would come to get her. But before either of you arrived, Katie was gone.
Simon: And you have no idea where she went?
Sister Mary: I can only hope that she finds whatever it is she's looking for, and that she never again requires sanctuary from our order. Now, if you gentlemen will excuse us. Sister?
Simon: Thank you. Thank you. Well, you heard her, didn't you? Weren't you listening? Katie obviously wants no part of you.
Bruno: What makes you think she wants any part of you?
Simon: I know she does. I'm gonna go find her.
Bruno: Where?
Simon: Why don't you mind your own business? Why are you even hanging around like such a bad smell? Go back. Go back to Atlantic City, all right? Nobody wants you here.
Bruno: Whoa, slow down, pal. You're not going anywhere.
Simon: Get your hands off me.
Bruno: Or what?
Simon: Or I'll get the Mother Superior in here to rap you over the knuckles.
Bruno: Look, Katie changed my life.
Simon: Yeah? Don't take it too personally.
Bruno: Listen, I am not gonna take this from a guy who marries her and can't even tell her he loves her.
Simon: Listen! What the hell do you even know about our situation?
Bruno: What do I know? I know you used her to stay in this country. You had her brother foot the bill for the two of you. And you never once told her how beautiful she was. Or that she had a smile that could make a joint checking account look good.
Simon: Well, thanks for the psychoanalysis, but you're a -- you're a gambler, right? Yeah? Why don't you go back to blackjack? 'Cause I'll tell you, you don't stand a chance with Katie.
Bruno: When I find Katie, it'll all change.
Simon: Really? Hey, lots of luck.
Bruno: Look, if you get in my way, we'll see who's got the good luck and who's got the bad.
10-31-01 ... Those Three Little Words
Margo: Hopefully, that's the bat catcher.
Simon: Hey. Have you seen Katie? Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt.
Jack: No, no. That's okay. I was just on my way out. Listen, Margo. If you need anything, please --
Margo: I told you what I needed -- you back on the force.
Jack: I'll call you.
Simon: I'm sorry about --
Jack: No, no.
Margo: What are you doing here? I thought you went after Katie. What, you didn't find her?
Simon: No, no. I was hoping she called you or something, anything.
Margo: No, not a word. What about her pinky-ringed boyfriend?
Simon: I don't know. But I do know that we have to find Katie before Bruno does.
Margo: Simon, you promised me that you would find her.
Simon: Believe me, Margo, I have tried.
Margo: Well, you can't just come here and dump this on my doorstep. What do you want me to do about it?
Simon: Well, apparently, you're her sister. Maybe you can help.
Margo: But she is a spoiled, willful little brat, and if anything happens to her --
Simon: Are you all right? You okay?
Margo: My nephew was killed in a car accident.
Simon: Craig's son?
Margo: Yeah. The funeral is today.
Simon: Wow. I'm really sorry. When did this happen?
Margo: Oh, a few nights ago.
Simon: I'd met him a couple times. I've seen him. He was a really good guy.
Margo: He was a really good guy, so -- so what about Katie? When was the last time she was seen?
Simon: Please, you're right. Don't you worry about it. I'm sure -- we know Katie. She's gonna be all right.
Margo: Yeah, you were sure you were gonna bring her home, too.
Simon: Look, I have covered thousands of miles. Now, it seems that every time I get closer, I'm a day behind catching up with her. You wouldn't believe this. The last time I know, she had hitched a ride to L.A., and that was about a week ago, and then I -- then I lost her. Margo, I am sorry. If anything happens to Katie, I won't forgive myself.
Margo: I almost believe you, Simon.
Simon: So what should we do? Maybe -- I don't know. Maybe you should open an official investigation or something like that.
Margo: You want Katie back?
Simon: You asked me the same thing the day that she ran away to the convent.
Margo: No, no. I asked you if you still wanted to be married to Katie. That's what I asked you.
Simon: Look, I have done so much thinking on the road the last couple of weeks, and I have realized something. Marriage, I don't -- whatever. I can take it or leave it, but this -- this. God help me, I want Katie back. And if I have lost her, then I've only got myself to blame.
Exterminator: I'm from Pest Arrest.
Margo: Oh, please, yes. Come in, yes.
Exterminator: How can I help you today?
Margo: Well, it's not down here. It's up in the attic, actually. The last few nights I've been hearing noises. I think there's bats or something. It's through the door right at the top of the steps there.
Simon: The worst thing about all this is that I think that Katie's been moving around so fast, because she's afraid of what Bruno might do to me.
Margo: Well, we did find that he has mob ties in New Jersey. And my contacts are still investigating, but no such luck.
Simon: Still, still, Bruno's been full of threats. Look, I just hope that he hasn't t to Katie first, that's all.
Margo: I don't think that this family can handle one more crisis. [ noises from the attic ] What the hell is -- what?
Simon: Well, it sounds like whatever is up there is fighting back.
Exterminator: I think I found the problem. He must have got lost.
Katie: Hey, give me back that bunny -- that bunny belongs to me, mister. Oh, it's okay, sweetheart. No one's gonna hurt you, Snickers. [Faces a shocked Margo and Simon.] Hi. I'm back.
Margo: Thank you. Don't you dare take that bunny out of that cage! I'm not cleaning up after him.
Katie: Aren't you glad to see us?
Margo: Oh, baby. Of course I am. I was worried sick about you. We all were. Simon was traveling all over the country looking for you. He just got back.
Katie: Really? You were looking for me?
Simon: Uh, yeah. I'm just glad you're safe.
Katie: Oh, I really wish I would have known that, 'cause I -- I wouldn't have gotten myself into so much trouble.
Margo: Katie, why were you hiding up in the attic?
Katie: Well, I got back a few days ago, and I didn't really know where to hide.
Margo: Are you hiding from Bruno?
Katie: Yes. From everything. I'm sorry I didn't let you know that I was here and safe. I just -- I needed some time to think. You have no idea where I've been.
Simon: Yes, I do. Yeah, I do. The convent, the ashram, the commune.
Katie: I just didn't really feel safe anywhere I went. The nuns at the convent were so angry with me. They kept yelling and yelling, which I know was practically my fault, because I made them so angry that they broke their vow of silence. And then, I went to the commune thinking that that would be okay. But the work was so much. It was like work, work, work. And so I thought the ashram would be the best place to go. Until I saw Bruno there trying to bribe someone for information. I figured that was the best time to leave. But at least I'm going to be back with the family in time for the funeral. You hear pretty much everything that goes on in this house up in that attic. And I heard you talking about Bryant. Oh my God, I feel so terrible. I have been the worst aunt in the world to him. I can't believe it.
Simon: Hey, it's gonna be all right, all right? You are home safe and sound. That's the most important thing.
Katie: I know you're just trying to tell me that to make me feel better.
Simon: I am not. I am not trying to tell you anything to make you feel better, okay? God, I missed you so much Katie, I love you.
Katie: You love me?
Simon: Yes. Yes, I do.
Katie: Bruno's not gonna be too happy about that.
Simon: I don't care. I don't -- I don't care what Bruno thinks.
Katie: We need to care, because we shouldn't even be in the same room together. I'm scared of what he's gonna do.
Simon: Come here.
Margo: All right, that's it. I'm going to the station, and I'm gonna track down this Portolano and have him brought in.
Katie: I just don't want him to get angry.
Margo: Listen, baby sister, I love you. I'm so happy you're home, in spite of everything.
Katie: Thank you.
Simon: You come here.
Katie: If you love me, then it was all worth it.
Simon: Life just is not the same without you, Katie.
Katie: You know, a couple of people have told me that before, but they didn't mean it in a good way.
Simon: I do. I mean it in the best ways.
Katie: You do?
Simon: Yes.
Katie: I want to hear you say it again.
Simon: Katie Frasier, I love you so much.
Katie: Oh, I love you more than you could ever know.
[ Doorbell rings ]
Simon: Forget about that. Come here.
[ Doorbell rings ]
Katie: Okay, it's probably the exterminator. I just -- I'll just get rid of him.
Simon: Get rid of him.
Bruno: Well, if it isn't my honey bun and her husband. Thanks. I knew you'd lead me back to Katie.
Katie: I'm not going anywhere with you, Bruno. I love Simon, and he loves me.
Bruno: How much, huh, Katie? You better decide how much you love this guy, and you do it quick. Because if you don't do what I say, you will regret it.
