  • 08-08-01 ... A Discussion of Romantic Potential: Yay or Nay?

  • Opera House Basement

    Katie: Shh, shh!
    Simon: What?
Katie: I heard footsteps, but they're gone now. It's okay. Go ahead.
    Simon: Okay.
Katie: Can I ask you something?
Simon: Only if it includes the phrase "can I help?"
Katie: I'm serious, Simon. I've been helping. Wasn't it my cross that got us out of those handcuffs in the first place?
Simon: Yes. Yes, it was. How can I help you, Katie?
Katie: When we get out of here --
Simon: We run to the closest sanctuary is what we do.
Katie: I'm not talking about here here. I'm talking about Malta and everything. When we get out, what's gonna happen between you and me?

Simon: Okay, what is wrong with this picture, Katie? We're hostages here, trying to get through that wall before a bunch of gun-happy goons burst in here to finish us off, and you, what do you want to do? You want to have a cup of tea? You want to take a moment out for an in-depth analysis of our romantic potential? Katie: No time like the present.
Simon: Here. Yeah, take this. This is all yours 'cause you obviously don't have enough to do. I'm going to listen for the guards. You work your way through that wall. Excellent!
Katie: Our entire relationship and future that I'm talking about.
Simon: Out entire future, Katie, could be less than your two-minute attention span if we don't get through that wall.
Katie: Well, if life outside of this prison doesn't include you in it, frankly, I'd just as soon stay here.
Simon: Fine. Fine. Here, give me that. Suit yourself. Because as soon as I can squeeze through that wall, I'm out of here.
Katie: You would, wouldn't you? Just take off and never look back. Fine. Don't even think about me, growing pencil-thin as I waste away in this disgusting joint. Losing every little bit of color I had in my face from baking in the sun, looking for your diamond. Don't think about me getting ravaged and molested by those gross guards out there. No, no, no, you just go home and you enjoy being back at the Lakeview, lounging around. And when people come up to you and they say, "hey, Simon, whatever happened to that perky, little blonde that used to be married to you?", You can just say, "I dunno, mate, dunno. Last time I saw her, she was eatin' bugs off a store room floor in Maltese."
Simon: I thought you didn't want to be called perky.
    Katie: Simon --
Simon: Listen, Katie. Didn't I come and rescue you off that island? Didn't I? Yes? Yes, I did.
Katie: Yes, you did. Probably because you thought I had your diamond. And you yelled at me the entire way home. And when I finally got you to admit that you actually loved me, you promised me a good night of good old-fashioned you-know-what, and did I ever collect even an hour of it? No. What are we doing instead? We're risking our lives for your ex-girlfriend who, might I add, never gave you a second of happiness. And even though just yesterday, I got you to promise to spend three days with me in a honeymoon suite because I had the perfect handcuff release tool just where you could get it, I'm not holding out any hope of you ever fulfilling that promise.

    Katie: Mm, more.
Simon: No, no, please, please. And what if you -- don't talk. Please don't talk.
    Katie: But Simon --
Simon: No, no, no. Enough. Look, I'm getting somewhere in that wall, okay? And when I'm done, we're out of here -- both of us.
Katie: Okay, but about afterwards, you never answered my question.
    Simon: Come on.
    Katie: What are you doing?
Simon: I'm answering your question. Okay?
Katie: You mean -- you mean if we get out of here and we get past those madmen and we actually get off this idiotic island, when we get back to Oakdale --
Simon: If we get back to Oakdale, we'll take it one day at a time, all right? Now let's get out of here, okay? Yes?
Katie: Well don't let me stop you. Fire up those muscles and dig.
    Simon: All right.
    [Lily screams upstairs.]
    Lily: No!
Simon: Oh, my God, that was Lily.
Katie: How could you possibly know that was Lily? How would you know what her scream sounds like?
Simon: I've heard her scream before.
Katie: Oh, don't even make me ask.
Simon: Listen, Lily and I have been through some tough spots. I definitely know that was her.
Katie: Fine. Where did it come from?
Simon: Somewhere in the opera house. Look, we've got to get to her, okay?
    Katie: Wait a minute, Simon.
Simon: We don't -- can you just quit it with your insane jealousy for just two seconds, please?
Katie: If you would stop bossing me around for two seconds, you would know that I know how to get past those guards.
    Simon: Fine. How?
Katie: Brains, baby. I think it's about time that Samson put down his tool and let Delilah take over.

Katie: Please, please help me. Help me! Please! It's Simon. He's gone. He took off, and I don't know what to do! I'm sorry, I was trying to be good, but he just kept insisting on leaving. Please, I don't know what to do. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please don't hurt me for this.
    Bodyguard # 1: Dove? Dove?
    Katie: Right here.
    Bodyguard #1: Where?
Katie: Right here. He went through this hole in the wall and then he drug these in front of it. That selfish con artist didn't even take me with him!
Bodyguard #1: What is this? You are playing with me?
Katie: What? No, I don't know what you mean.
[Simon reaches out from inside an old armoire, grabs the guard and pulls him inside.]

    Katie: Simon? Simon?
[Simon comes stumbling out of the armoire.]
Katie:Oh, oh, thank God. I so worried. Are you okay? Are you okay?
Simon: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine. Let's get out of here. Stay close behind me, okay?
Katie: No, I should probably go first. I'm a better distraction.
Simon: No, I've got the gun. Stick close behind me, please.
Katie: Okay. Like glue, sweetheart, now and forever.
    Simon: You ready?
    Katie: Yeah.
[Simon and Katie run out of the room. Seconds later we hear gunshots.]

  • 08-09-01 ... Katie's Sleepin' With Her Shoes On

  • Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

Lily: [On the phone] Mother, I'm sorry that I missed your call, but I am here in Malta with Simon and Katie, and we have gotten some leads and some contacts, and I'm sure that we're going to find Holden and Luke very soon. Please give Faith a big kiss for me, and tell her that I love her. I miss my little girl.
[Lily hears someone trying to open the door and screams]
Simon: Wait, wait! Lily, wait. It's us. It's us.
Lily: Oh, it's so good to see you guys. I didn't think I'd ever see you alive again.

Katie: Simon was amazing. He knocked out one of the guards. He took his gun.
Simon: And we shot up the place and got out of there.
Lily: I'm so sorry. I never meant to put either one of you in any danger.
Katie: It's okay. It was fun. Well, not fun, but exciting.
Lily: I've had enough excitement for my entire life. I saw Dante.
    Simon: So did we.
Lily: He is Damian's half-brother. He wants the Grimaldi Empire. That's why he's after Luke.
Simon: He hasn't got him yet though, right?
Lily: No, not yet, but it's only a matter of time. He's got people everywhere. He wants me to lure Damian to some cafe in the hills so he can kill him.
    Katie: What?
Lily: If I don't do it, he's going to kill Luke.
Simon: Look, Lily, he's gonna kill Luke anyway.
Lily: No, he's not gonna do that. He said that he won't.
Simon: Listen, Luke is Damian's heir.
Lily: But see, Luke isn't a threat to him, 'cause Luke does not want the Grimaldi Empire.
Katie: So you're just gonna let Damian get killed?
Lily: Yes, if I have to.
Simon: Lily, Lily, Lily, you have to think about this.
Lily: Damian would do the same thing. He's already proven that. He would sacrifice all of us to protect Luke.

Lily: So I agreed to bring Damian up to the cafe Dellarte in the hills, and Dante said he would stop pursuing Holden and Luke.
Simon: All right. Okay, do you have any idea where Damian is?
Lily: No, and I only have one week to find him and bring him there.
Simon: That's okay, all right? That's bought us some time at least.
Lily: Not much time, and in that time, Dante could be using that time to look for Luke himself!
Simon: Look, Holden and Luke's luck has got them this far, right?
Lily: Dante has men everywhere looking for them. If I could just find Holden and Luke before this week's time. I could avoid this entire situation!
Simon: Okay, but they can't have gotten far. I mean, they escaped just as we got to the opera house.
Lily: I checked everywhere. I asked questions at the harbor, the train station --
Simon: Wait, wait. What about the church?
    Lily: What?
Simon: The church -- when we were locked in that room, we kept hearing the bells from the nearby church.
Katie: Yes, and I heard them from the jail, too. They were really loud.
Lily: Then Holden must have heard them, too.
    Simon: Yes.
Lily: You're right. Simon, you're absolutely right.
Simon: Here, wait, wait. Take the passport. The embassy opens at 8:00, but the guard will let you in, okay?
Katie: No, I don't think so.
    Lily: Katie, it's called asylum.
Katie: No, it's called 6'4" in his socks and at least 280.
    Simon: What?
Lily: That's one of Dante's men.
Simon: With an Uzi strapped to his back.
Katie: Yeah, he looks like the shoot now forget about it later type.
Lily: Oh, my gosh. What are we gonna do now? He's watching every movement we make.
Simon: At least we know that they don't have Holden and Luke. Otherwise, that big guy wouldn't be planted out there.
    Lily: Sooner or later --
    Simon: Okay, he'll fall asleep.
Katie: Or recycle the bottle of wine that he just drank.
Simon: Okay, okay. Whatever. We just have to wait.
Katie: Fine with me. I am so exhausted. I have to take a nap.
Lily: And I'm too wired to sleep.
Simon: We're gonna sleep. Please, will you wake me when tiny out there nods off? None of this Lily to the rescue by her lonesome?
Lily: No Lily to the rescue by her lonesome.
Katie: Come on, Simon. We haven't slept in days.

    Lily: Simon, he's asleep.
    Katie: What?
    Lily: He's asleep!
    Katie: So am I.
Lily: No. Dante's goon, the guard, is asleep.
    Katie: Oh, he fell asleep?
Lily: Yes. He must've nodded off because of the wine. He's asleep. He's slouched over by the garden wall. We've got to get to the church right now.
Katie: Let's go. Just let me get my shoes.
    Lily: Simon. Simon, wake up.
Katie: Oh, I slept in my shoes?
Lily: I've got to go. I'm going.
Katie: No. Wait, wait, wait. Don't go. Hold on. Simon. I took a nap, but he hasn't slept in days.
Lily: I will be back in 20 minutes.
    Katie: What about the guard?
Lily: Once I'm gone, there's nothing that he can do.
Katie: What if he sees you come back? Just hold on. Simon, we can't let her go. It's too dangerous. Just wake up, would you? Simon
[Lily can't wait any longer and runs out of the room, intent on finding Holden and Luke on her own.]
Katie: Lily! Lily! Simon's gonna kill me. All right, just keep snoring, tiny. Looks like she got past you. Besides, how much trouble could she get in in a church, right?

[ Simon is sleeping and mutters something in his sleep.]
    Katie: What? What was that?
    Simon: Love.
Katie: Hmm, three guesses of what you're dreaming about. Let's see, who could it be, Ilsa, Monique, Svetlana? Oh, no, no, wait. I have a better idea. Definitely sounded kind of like "Lily."
    Simon: Katie.
    Katie: You're dreaming about me?

  • 08-17-01 ... Simon's Marital Expertise: He IS the World's Greatest Husband

  • Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

Simon: Hey, I'm back. Katie? Lily? Anyone in there? No notes and --
Katie: Hey. Oh, it says "world's greatest husband." At least that's what the guy at the souvenir stand said.
Simon: Oh, right. [ Katie grabs Simon and kisses him ] Katie, Katie, I --
Katie: I've been waiting all day to do that!
Simon: Wait, wait, wait. Where have you been just now?
Katie: I went to get a bucket of ice so we could have a glass of wine. You like white best, right? Oh, I want every day to be like this -- you come home from a rough day, and I greet you with dry wine and a wet kiss.
Simon: Katie, wait. I have something to tell you!
Katie: And then -- no, and then we can sit on our porch and cuddle and drink wine and watch the sun set. And we'll do this, and then you'll take me up to bed, and you know what comes next.
Simon: Wait, stop right there. Lily could walk in at any moment.
Katie: She's gonna be gone for hours.
    Simon: Why? Where is she?
Katie: I think she went back to that church.
Simon: What?! What, you let her go back out there alone?

Katie: What difference does it make if Lily want to spend the night at the church?
Simon: I still can't believe you let her go back out there.
Katie: Stop saying that I let her do things, Simon. I am not her mother. She's fine.
Simon: She's upset right now, okay? She's in no state to make decisions like that.
Katie: I know. I understand that, but if it makes her feel better to be at the church, praying for Luke and Holden, then that's what she should be doing -- where are you going?
Simon: Well, I'm gonna go and find Lily and talk some sense into her, aren't I?
Katie: Right, and when you're trying to talk sense into her, she's gonna have one question for you -- "have you found Damian?" And what are you gonna tell her?
    Simon: No. No, I haven't. No, not -- but I'm getting some -- but I'm --
Katie: But what? Why bring her bad news? She's already freaked out enough that Dante told her she has one week to bring Damian to him. One week. Days have gone by. We've found nothing. We've looked and looked. You went to Sicily! This guy does not want to be found, all right? This is not a big island.
Simon: So what are you saying, Katie? What are you saying? We just give up?
Katie: No, of course we don't give up, but at least let her be in the church and have her hope.
Simon: But she's all by herself out there, though, you know?
Katie: I know. I understand that. But if you -- did you ever think that maybe she's staying away from us as a favor?
    Simon: What do you mean?
Katie: So you and I can be alone, like a husband and wife should be. Lily's not the only one that needs you.
Simon: Well -- Katie, I'm -- look, I'm sorry, okay? I know you're feeling neglected. But, hey, think of all the benefits.
    Katie: What benefits?
Simon: Well, look -- I'm like kind of an expert in marriage, right?
Katie: Yeah, five times over. You don't have to remind me.
Simon: Yeah, okay, but I've worked out that every relationship follows a kind of a pattern. It's pretty predictable. Okay, first, there's the attraction, all right? And then you go out, and then there's great sex. Katie: Sounds good so far.
Simon: It is, and then you get married, and there's more great sex, and then it all becomes a bit too familiar, and then the fire goes out, and the thrill is gone, and the marriage is over.
Katie: So you're saying the longer we don't have sex, the longer our marriage will last?
Simon: Bingo! That's exactly it. Don't you get it?
Katie: Yeah, and it's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my entire life!

Katie: Okay, let me get this straight. You don't want to have sex with me because you're afraid it will ruin our marriage?
Simon: Well, we still have that precious element of mystery between us. Why risk losing it so soon?
    Katie: Oh, Simon --
Simon: Oh, please, don't get upset.
Katie: Upset? Why would I be upset when I finally have proof that you really love me?
    Simon: Wait! I didn't say I --
Katie: We fit together like we were made for each other, and that scares the hell out of you, which is exactly why you keep running after lily every time we are alone.
Simon: No, I'm trying to help Lily.
Katie: Yes, that's part of it, but the other part is that you know when we make love again, it'll be perfect, and you'll finally have to admit what you've been trying to deny ever since Halloween, that you love me! That's exactly what this is all about!
Simon: If you're -- wait, wait, wait. If you're suggesting that the only reason I came all the way here was because I tried to avoid consummating our marriage, then that is ridiculous.
Katie: So, you're not afraid of what'll happen when we make love again?
Simon: Afraid? No, no, why should I be afraid?
Katie: Okay, then prove it, big boy! Come on, I dare you.
[Simon grabs Katie and pulls her down into his arms and kisses her.]
Simon: It is always going to be good for us, Katie, because I'm good.
    Katie: We're good -- together.
Simon: That, too. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go.
Katie: Simon! [Katie sighs] Okay, you know he expects you to follow him, so you might as well just do it.
    Guido: Greetings, Signora Frasier.
Katie: Um, do I know you?
Guido: Not yet, but you do not need to fear me. In fact, you can think of me as a Santa Claus. I come bearing gifts.

Guido: Thank you for being so gracious. This should not take long.
Katie: Oh, it's fine. I have nothing better to do anyway.
Simon: What do you think you're doing?
Katie: Well, what difference does it make? You have damsels to rescue and dragons to slay.
Simon: Who is this, and why are you letting him into the room?
Guido: Allow me to introduce myself. Guido Boggia, Chief Inspector, Malta police.
Katie: And you have no need to worry, I already saw his badge. Now, can I get you a drink?
Simon: No one is getting anything until I see some identification. Thanks.
Katie: You see, you have nothing to worry about. Now, about that drink?
Guido: As tempted as I am, I assume we should get down to business.
Katie: Oh, yes -- the gifts! He has presents for me. Isn't that sweet?
Guido: In fact, I have one for each of you.
    Simon: Plane tickets?
    Guido: Paid in full.
Katie: Wow? Where are we supposed to be going?
Guido: Home, to America. Buon viaggio.

Katie: Thank you so much for these tickets. They'll definitely come in handy when we're leaving.
Simon: Don't be so naive, Katie. I'm sure there are strings attached, right?
    Katie: Are there?
Guido: Forgive me for asking you, Signora, but I noticed in your papers that your maiden name is Peretti. Are you Italian?
Katie: Yes, actually, half, on my father's side.
Guido: I knew it. Those eyes. If I were not married for 30 years and the father of six bambinos, I would be -- how do you say it? I would be putty in your hands.
Simon: Why don't you -- how do you say? Answer the question? Are there strings attached?
Guido: No, the tickets are yours, free and clear, but you must use them immediately if you want to call that the catch?
Simon: Look, we came here to Malta to help a friend. We're not getting on any plane until I've talked to her.
    Guido: An American friend?
Simon: You know exactly who I'm talking about.
Guido: I can only imagine that this is Signora Snyder, since this is her room.
Simon: Look, why don't you just drop the act and be straight with us?
Katie: Simon, there's no need to be rude. The man is just doing his job.
Simon: Oh, I have no doubt, but I'm not going anywhere until I find out what that job is. What's really going on, inspector?

Guido: My officers are waiting outside to escort you and Signora Frasier to the airport.
Simon: Yeah, well, that's fine, because I'm only gonna come straight back.
Guido: You are so obstinate. Believe me that no one is going to hurt Signora Snyder.
Simon: I'd like to see you prove that.
Guido: Very well. This is a travel order requesting your departure. Look at the signature, if you will.
Katie: What's wrong? What is it?
Simon: This was supposedly signed by a Grimaldi, but it wasn't Dante. It was Damian.

  • 08-20-01 ... Damian Calls the Shots

  • Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

Simon: I don't care if Damian Grimaldi did sign those travel orders, we are not being forced back to the states. Katie, please, just stop packing. Stop packing.
Katie: Have you seen my pink -- never mind, I'll just get more when we get home.
Guido: The longer you stay here, the more dangerous it will be for you. I am offering a safe passage home.
Simon: Look, if Damian really did sign those papers, it's only because he knows that we are getting close to him.
    Guido: Signora Frasier?
Katie: Simon, honey -- think about all the plans that we made for when we get back home. Wouldn't it be terrible if we got killed instead?
Simon: Katie, I know you're frightened. All right? But we cannot abandon Lily when she hasn't even found Holden and Luke.
Katie: He does have a point.
Guido: I know you care deeply for Signora Snyder, but since the police got involved, I -- I assure you that--
Simon: Look, your assurances mean absolutely nothing. Where is Lily Snyder now?
    Guido: I don't know.
    Simon: Yes, you do.
    Guido: I can't tell you.
    Simon: Yes, you will.

    Simon: Come on, let's go.
    Katie: Where are we going?
    Simon: To find Lily ourselves.
Guido: All right. I will take you to Signora Snyder.
    Simon: What's the catch?
Guido: After you see that she is well, you go straight for the airport.
    Simon: Fine, it's a deal.
Katie: See? A little give, a little take and all our problems are solved.
Guido: Signora Snyder is being held at the Prefecture of Police. I'll tell her to expect you.
Simon: We've got to get Lily out of there. If she's locked up, she can't bring Damian to Dante.
Katie: I've been thinking about that. How is she gonna go through with it?
Simon: Look, Dante gave Lily a very clear choice. Bring Damian to him, and Luke and Holden live. Fail, and they die. It's not gonna be easy for her, but everything that she loves is at stake.

    Jail Cell

Guido: [Frees Lily from her cell] Signora Snyder. I hope this has not been too unpleasant for you.
    Lily: I've had better accommodations.
Guido: You are free to go. Turns out the good Friar had slipped in the bathtub.
Lily: And wound up in an alley?
Guido: Perhaps he crawled. In a small, old-fashioned country, anything is possible.
    Simon: Lily! You all right?
Lily: I'm -- it's good to see you guys.
Katie: Is that your cellmate? Ah, he reeks!
    Lily: Oh, no, he's -- he's harmless.
Guido: Mr. Frasier? Move this along.
Simon: Yes. We have to leave.
    Lily: What?
Simon: It seems your ex-husband is having us deported.
    Lily: Is this true?
Guido: I would prefer to say that our guests are being asked, respectfully to come again another time.
Simon: Damian wants us to leave for some reason. I don't know what it is, but I could easily find out.
    Lily: How?
Simon: Give me five minutes with him. I'll show you how.

  • 08-21-01 ... "A Treasure Worth Valuing"

  • Malta Police Station

Katie: Damian can't really just kick us out of Malta, can he?
Simon: No, no, no, listen. Lily, I've already told this guy here that nobody's deporting us until we find out what happens to you.
Guido: Signore Grimaldi is a very powerful man. It's not easy to ignore his orders.
Katie: What happens when you get deported, Simon? I mean, are we going to have criminal records?
Simon: No, no, we're not. I've already spoke to the American embassy. I put in a call to make sure someone's on duty 24 hours. Lily, listen. I will find Damian. Go there with Katie and get some help.
Lily: The embassy? What about Luke and Holden?
Guido: Signora Snyder, you are free to go. Is there a problem?
    Lily: No. [ remembering Damian's word ]
Damian: No matter what they offer you,
don't tell them you've seen me.
    If you betray me now,
there's no chance for any of us,
    especially Luciano.
Lily: No, there's no problem. I'm sure Katie and maybe the Inspector will make sure that there are nothing -- no charges brought against you if you leave the country. You just take Katie home. I'll be fine here on my own.
Simon: What? How can you say that when no one's even explained to you why you're in jail in the first place?
Lily: It was a misunderstanding. There was an incident at the church. They thought I witnessed something, but I didn't. But we understand each other, Inspector.
Guido: Si, Signora, si. You are really free to go. I'll get you the papers.
Lily: I'll go with you to the airport to make sure that the two of you get off okay.
Katie: Okay, great. Let's get out of here before that drunk wakes up and starts dry heaving.
Simon: No, no, I don't like this. Something is not right.
Lily: You always, always told me to trust my instincts. My instincts brought me to Luke and Holden, when everybody else told me that they were dead. My instincts kept me safe. Please, I'm begging you. Please, just go.
Simon: What? What? So I'm supposed to leave you here in the hands of the inspector general? I wouldn't trust this guy as far as I could throw him.
Katie: Simon -- what Simon means is, the inspector's just -- as kind as he's been, you're in a foreign country. It's not your own. You have to be careful, right?
Guido: We are running out of time for you and your wife, Mr. Frasier. I suggest we go to the airport now, or you'll miss your plane.
Simon: Why do I get the feeling that if you said the word, we'd be allowed to stay in this country?
    Lily: I don't know. But I wouldn't say that.
Simon: You've got to be planning something, Lily. We are not getting on any plane until you tell us what your plan is.
Lily: I will -- I will talk to you at the airport. I can go along for the ride and bring them to the airport, yes?
Guido: Yes, I assume you can. The car is waiting outside. Go ahead. Go ahead. I'll be right there[ Airport in Malta ]

    Maltese Airport

Guido: We are on time for your departure, Signore and Signora. Boarding will begin in a few minutes.
Simon: Can I speak to you, please, alone?

Guido: Signora Snyder is very close to your husband, Signora Frasier.
Katie: Everybody sees it, don't they? Even you. Oh, if I could be half as close to him as she is.

Simon: You want me to tell Lucinda that you know that Holden and Luke are alive when I get back?
Lily: No, because she'll send the National Guard, and she'll only put my family in more danger. Just tell her that you were deported by the authorities and you found nothing and that I'm safe.
Simon: You've seen Damian, haven't you?
    Lily: Yes.
Simon: And does he know that his rotten brother has Holden and Luke?
Lily: Yes. But he has people all over Malta looking for them.
Simon: What are you going to do?
Lily: He says he wants to meet me somewhere private to explain the whole mess.
Simon: Where? Where are you going to meet?
Lily: He mentioned an orchard, but I suggested the Cafe Dellarte.
Simon: Right. It's the cafe Dante chose, isn't it? I don't know, Lily. If Damian was smart enough to stage his own death, then don't you think he might figure out that you're going to set him up?
Lily: Maybe. But I saw the look in his eyes. He trusts me. He does not believe that I am capable of doing what I need to do. And I am lucky. I have the element of surprise on my side. I'll meet him and then -- then hopefully --
    [Lily cries]
Simon: You are breaking my heart, Lily. Are you sure you can do this?
Lily: No one should ever have to do this -- set up my son's father to the people that want him dead. But if it means seeing my husband and my son alive, then this is just the way that it has to be.

Guido: Where in the United States do you call home, Signora?
Katie: Oh, the Midwest, actually. And please, call me Katie.
Guido: That's a lovely name. It would be Caterina in Italian.
    Katie: Caterina Peretti.
Guido: Are you sure you are only half Italian?
Katie: Yes, just half on my father's, his family was originally from Tuscany.
Guido: Oh, bellissima. Bellissima, Toscana, bellissima. That is the most beautiful region in Italy, an inspiration for Michelangelo. You did not have the opportunity to visit there when you were in Europe?
Katie: No, actually, I really didn't have a vote on the itinerary.
Guido: Perhaps some other time, at happier circumstances, you will visit the Tuscan vineyards life has stayed for hundreds of years the way it used to be. You will see the hills, the vineyards, the olive groves. You and your husband will stay in a beautiful stone villa built on the side of a hill and discover the wonders of paradise together.
Katie: Oh, you make it sound so beautiful.
Guido: Well, it is something to hope for, no?

Simon: This game that you are playing, Lily, could destroy you. How do you expect me to leave?
Lily: I have to do this alone. I am the one who got Holden and Luke involved in this craziness. I am the one that has to end it. Please, please, try to understand.
Simon: You could be putting your life on the line if you give Damian up to his brother.
Lily: No, this is the way that it has to be.
Simon: Oh, fine. If I can't convince you, then, please, just think about Luke.
Lily: He's all I think about.
Simon: How is Luke going to live with the guilt that if in saving his life, you give up your own? But if you do survive, how is he ever, ever going to understand that in saving him, you sacrificed his own father?

Simon: So you're going to go through with this, no matter what happens to Damian?
Lily: Part of me will always love Damian, because he's Luke's father. But the fact of the matter is -- is that Damian put us in this hell in the first place. And he chose to face off with Dante and put Luke in danger. If he gets in the way of me getting back my husband and my son, he's brought this on himself. Hasn't he?
Simon: Tip him off. Tip him off. Can't you tell Damian what Dante's up to? He's got a lot of power here. He might be able to figure something out.
Lily: No, I can't take that chance. Dante said he would kill Holden and Luke if I tipped off Damian.
Simon: His word means nothing. If you go through with this, you could end up losing all three of them -- Damian, Holden and Luke.
Lily: Stop it! I have thought about this from every single angle? I don't have a choice.
Guido: I insist that you and your wife board the plane now.
Simon: Yeah. Yes, yeah, we'll be there. Look after yourself. Be safe.
    Lily: I will.
Katie: I'll be praying for you, Lily, that you find Luke and Holden safe and sound.
Lily: Thank you. No, I mean thank you so much for all your help.
    Guido: It is time now.
    Simon: Yeah, we're ready.
Guido: Caterina, I wish you much happiness in your life. You are a treasure, a person of great value and such a special woman. Remember that.
    Katie: Thank you.
[Katie and Simon board their plane.]
Guido: Do not be sad, Signora. You have traveled through some dark times, but the clouds are going to lift up. Believe.
Lily: I pray that you're right.
Guido: Come, I will walk you back to your pensione.

Airplane in Malta Prior to Takeoff

Katie: You and Lily talked for quite a while.
Simon: Yeah, I'm worried about her.
    Katie: What else is new?
Simon: You had a pretty long conversation yourself, didn't you? With the inspector.
    Katie: He's a nice guy.
    Simon: How nice?
Katie: He told me all about Tuscany. That's where all the Peretti's are from, you know?
Katie: He said that heaven would not compare after seeing Tuscany.
Simon: I'm sorry. Katie, I'm really sorry that you didn't get to see Italy. I'm sorry about that and a whole lot more. [Simon leans over and kisses Katie.]

Katie: What else? What else are you sorry about?
Simon: I'm sorry I'm not going to be on this flight with you. I'm gonna stay here in Malta --
Katie: Wait, what are you talking about? We're about to leave the gate.
Simon: Which is why I have to go now.
Katie: No. Simon, stop it. What are you talking about? Inspector Boggia's not going to happy about this. And how are you going to get through customs?
Simon: You don't want to know. It's easier for one person than two, so don't follow me. Okay? It's too dangerous. I'll see you back in Oakdale. [Simon gets up and starts to walk off the plane]
Katie: Maybe you won't! Maybe when you get back home, you won't have Caterina Peretti to kick around anymore! I am a treasure, Simon! A treasure worth valuing! Got it?!

  • 08-24-01 ... If Crash-Landing a Plane Wasn't Enough, I Went to the Opera

  • The Lakeview Lounge

Bartender: Madame, can I get you anything?
Katie: Um, yeah, give me anything, as long as it's Italian.
    Bartender: I'm Italian.
Katie: Grazie. Do you accept lira?
Craig: Lira, huh? I'll have whatever the lady's having. Of course, I use the term "lady" loosely.
Katie: Well, of course, you use every lady loosely.
Craig: It depends how tightly they're wound. I thought you were lost in the Bermuda triangle.
Katie: And I thought you were on death row by now.
Craig: Ah, but I am free, and you are back. So here is to my sister.
    Katie: Oh, to my brother.
    Craig: What is this?
    Katie: Chianti. It's Italian.
Craig: So was Mussolini. So are you celebrating your checkered past?
Katie: Not so past. I've just been to Malta.
Craig: The Bermuda triangle and Malta, too?
Katie: That was over a month ago. Me, a crashed plane, a desert island, not that you care.
Craig: Well, I was a little preoccupied with death row, which I have beaten, not that you care. So, you escaped the desert island and then went to Malta? Why?
Katie: Well, Lily found out that Holden and Luke were alive and well and detained in Malta, so she headed there, and Simon and I went with her.
Craig: So Lily went to Malta, and Simon went after Lily, and you went after him.
Katie: For your information, not only did Simon come and rescue me from that island, but somewhere in between a Maltese jail cell and an opera house, he fell madly and deeply in love with me.
Craig: Ah, and where is he now? In Malta?
Katie: Simon is still in Malta because he is a man of honor.
Craig: Ah, so he's honoring Lily.
Katie: You know what you are? The pot calling the kettle black.
Craig: Well at least I'm not simonized.
Katie: You may have beaten those charges, Craig, but how long did your marriage last to Barbara? What, a good ten minutes? And you were the first person she thought of when it was time to charge someone. So don't lecture me, okay?
Craig: You're not doing much better.
Katie: I am loved. Simon may be in Malta, but he loves me. I'm not sure anyone loves you.

Craig: It must be nice being loved.
Katie: It is divine. That day that Simon flew all the way to that island to come get me, I -- he kissed me like it was our last day on earth.
Craig: Simon Frasier, man of honor.
Katie: Yes, he is a man of honor.
Craig: And you deserve nothing less, Katie. I am very happy for you. I am.
Katie: Why are you being nice all of a sudden?
Craig: I'm always nice to you. I took you in, you and your husband. I even gave the man of honor a job, and look what happened. [ Craig takes a sip of his Chianti ] Grape juice. Bartender, I'd like a real drink, please.
Katie: How do you do that? How did you know?
    Craig: What? Vodka neat, two.
Katie: We were on the plane. We were about to take off, and oh, why did you have to start being nice? I could have pulled it off.
Craig: What are you talking about?
Katie: I flew halfway across the world. I crash-landed a plane. I found his diamond. Yes, I lost it, but doesn't effort count for something? I got thrown in jail. I got kidnapped by thugs. I went to the opera, Craig. What else can I do for this man?
    Craig: Stop.

Katie: Thank you, Ann Landers. Since when do you know anything about love?
Craig: Oh, I've been amassing a catalog of everything that doesn't work. And believe me -- believe me, chasing the object of your desire is definitely under "doesn't."
Katie: That's what Simon wants. He wants me to stop chasing him.
Craig: That's what he thinks he wants. If you stop, he will miss you. I guarantee that.
    Katie: You've tried this?
    Craig: Here I sit.
Katie: Waiting for your significant other to notice that you're gone?
    Craig: The clock is ticking.
Katie: Hmm. I got to tell you, Craig, no amount of ticking is going to turn Barbara around.
Craig: No, that bomb already blew, but what's Barbara got to do with this?
Katie: The object of your affection. No, no, no. Yes, of course, I read about the trial. Those kissy-kissy pictures. You are waiting for Carly Tenney.
    Craig: No.
Katie: Yes. You said we both needed to stop.
Craig: Well, I meant you and Simon in general. You know, you make yourself a little less available, make him a little more jealous. I can tell you, he wasn't happy when you flew away on that plane.
    Katie: Really?
    Craig: Oh, yeah.
Katie: You're just trying to change the subject.
Craig: When's our hero coming home?
    Katie: Who knows?
Craig: Well, look, listen. Why don't you go take a bubble bath, call room service? You'll feel better.
Katie: So you really think you could get Carly Tenney away from Mr. True Blue, Oakdale P.D.?
Craig: [ Looking at her nails ] Get yourself a manicure, too, huh?
Katie: Again I ask -- why are you being so nice?
Craig: When Simon was half out of his mind with fear that something had happened to you, I couldn't do anything. Now I can. So go on.
Katie: So he was really, truly worried about me?
    Craig: Yeah, yeah.
Katie: You know, I take it back. You are quite lovable. So this hard-to-get thing, you really think it'll work?
    Craig: I do.
Katie: So why not give it a chance? Whoever she is, let her chase you.
[ Katie leaves to go upstairs ]

[Rose catches a glimpse of Katie who has returned to the Lounge. Rose ducks out of sight]
Craig: Okay. Ah, very nice, Katie.
Katie: Caterina Peretti of the Tuscan Peretti's.
    Craig: Signora.
    Katie: Ciao Bella.
    Craig: Ciao Bella.
[Rose calls Lucinda on her cell phone.]
Rose: Hey, Ms. Walsh? It's Rose. You'll never guess who's back in town, Katie Frasier. I'm sure she knows what's going on with Lily and Simon. Now, get down here and talk to her right now!

  • 08-27-01 ... A Promise is a Promise

  • The Lakeview Lounge

Lucinda: Well! If it isn't Katie Peretti! Not on a desert island but here at The Lakeview. Looking very fetching this evening, too.
Katie: Thank you. It's Katie Peretti-Frasier, actually. And I was just on my way out.
Lucinda: Oh, but I'm sure you could spare a few moments for me.
Katie: I don't know why. We're not exactly friends, are we? And I have places to be.
Lucinda: Really? Tonight, so late? Looking so fetching? Where are you going?
    Katie: Tuscany.
    Lucinda: Tuscany?
    Katie: Yes.
Lucinda: Oh, Tuscany! Oh, Tuscany. I love Tuscany!
Katie: Oh, really? You've been there?
Lucinda: Oh, of course, darling. Of course I've been there. The hills, the air. The light, the wine. The food. Are you planning on a little holiday with your hunky husband? Where is that charming man?
    Katie: He's -- away.
Lucinda: Yes, dear. He's in Malta, with Lily, where I sent him. Is he still there? Have you heard from him?
    Katie: Yes.
Lucinda: Is he still helping Lily, helping her find Holden and Luke? What?
    Katie: Yes.
Lucinda: Hmm, "yes." Okay. Did he speak to you today? What is going on in Malta? I need to know. What is the last thing Simon said to you?
Katie: The last thing Simon said to me was that he would kill me if I opened my mouth, so --

Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

Lily: What are you doing here? I put you on a plane to go back home!
Simon: I don't know. I've got this thing about being deported.
    Lily: Where's Katie?
Simon: Hopefully she's safe and sound and silent back in Oakdale.
Lily: Well, what about the police?
    Simon: What about them?
Lily: They're going to find you, Simon. And they're going to put you on the next plane out of here.
Simon: I made a clean getaway. You and I are the only ones who know I'm here.
Lily: Good. I'm glad you're here. I'm really -- it's really great that you're here.
Simon: Look at me. Did something else happen since the airport?
Lily: I don't think I can do this.
Simon: You can't do this? You can. You can do this. You have to think about holding Luke in your arms again, safe at home with his father.
Lily: Every time that I think about Holden and Luke being safe, all I see is Damian -- dead!

    The Lakeview Lounge

Lucinda: My poor daughter. Went off on this quest with nothing but a message in a bottle and some hope. Now, I haven't heard much from her, a few words, and nothing whatsoever from Simon. I just need to know -- is she in trouble, in danger?
    Katie: She's fine.
    Lucinda: "She's fine."
Katie: She's doing lots of things.
    Lucinda: Yeah? Like what?
Katie: She's going to the opera. Going to church. Enjoying the petunias.
Lucinda: Really? You saw her when you were there? I know you were there because she told me you were there with Simon.
Katie: Well, if you have such open dialogue with your daughter, then why don't you ask her instead of bothering me?
Lucinda: I just need to know what's happening. Are they achieving their goal in the search for Holden?
    Katie: I cannot say.
    [Lucinda laughs]
Lucinda: Oh, darling, I do understand. A promise is a promise.
    Katie: Good.
Lucinda: I can honor that kind of thinking. I mean, obviously
Katie: I thought so. I was hoping that you'd say that.
    [Lucinda laughs]
    Katie: Ciao.
Lucinda: Sit down, darling. You flibbertigibbet darling! You know more than that, and I want to know what it is! What is going on? I want information about what's happening in Malta.
Katie: I cannot and will not. Sorry.
    Lucinda: What's your price?
    [Katie sighs]
    > Katie: You're trying to bribe me? What, like I'm some lowlife from nowhere? I'm sorry, Ms. Walsh. I'm not like other people. I don't take bribes.
    Lucinda: Everybody has a price.
Katie: I am a Tuscany Peretti, okay? I'm a gift. I'm a treasure. And we live by a code.
Lucinda: Darling, the only code that you have is an area code. I need to know what's going on in Malta. Now, please tell me before I have to resort to force.
Katie: Go right ahead. I will die without a whimper.
Lucinda: Would that that were true. Come on, darling!
    Anything! Something! Anything.
Katie: Do you understand the word "no?!" No!
[Katie walks away, but looks back to see Lucinda clearly upset. She reconsiders and goes back to talk to Lucinda about what she knows.]
Katie: Okay. But you have got to promise -- you have got to swear on your mother's grave and a stack of bibles that you will not tell anyone what I am about to tell you.
Lucinda: On my mother's grave? It's a deal.
Katie: She saw him. Lily saw Luke, and he's alive.
    [Lucinda exhales]

Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

Lily: Oh, it's such a beautiful island, you know? So many friendly faces. But you're the only one that I can trust. What would I do without you, Simon?
Simon: Well, there's always signora Cordina.
    Lily: Oh!
Simon: I'm sure, now that she's back, she's keeping a watchful eye on you.
Lily: Yes, that watchful eye. Hmm. Ignoring all of my questions.
Simon: What about the police inspector?
Lily: Oh, yes, him, he who locked me in a jail cell with Damian but won't answer a simple question of who he's working for.
Simon: Wait, wait, wait, wait. You were in jail with Damian? I visited you in that cell.
Lily: Yes, remember that drunk man passed out on the floor? It was Damian.
    Simon: Ah, that was him.
    Lily: Yes.
Simon: Well, it seems to be his specialty, doesn't it, traveling incognito?
Lily: I really wanna find him. I really do, before this deadline.
Simon: I've spent the last few hours scouring this town, trying to pay off anyone who might have an idea of where he's hiding.
    Lily: Nothing?
Simon: No, not quite. Well -- I did find out that Dante's up in the hills at a restaurant that's like his headquarters. I assume that's the Café Dellarte, where he wants you to bring Damian.
Lily: Yes. Where it all begins -- and ends. For one of us, for some of us, maybe for all of us.
Simon: Come on. You cannot think like that.
Lily: No, I cannot keep living this fantasy that I'll bring Holden and Luke home safe and sound, and we'll live happily ever after.
Simon: It could work, Lily. It could work. Well, if Dante weren't out for blood.
Lily: We have to think of a plan that works to our advantage and Damian's.
Lily: We have to think of a way to warn Damian that he's walking into a trap.
Simon: What if he's already on his way to the cafe?
Lily: Well, then we have to stop him! We have to think of something.
Simon: Lily, Lily -- if I continue to search for him, the only thing I'm gonna find is the inside of a jail cell.
Lily: What are we gonna do? Think of something!
Simon: We have -- we have to get a message to him somehow.
Simon: Look, I think our best bet is Signora Cordina.
Lily: We don't know who she's working for.
    Simon: It doesn't matter.
Lily: It does matter, because if she's trying to sell out Damian, then any message we try to get him she'll give to Dante first.
Simon: All right. So we put the message in some kind of code.
Lily: Right, something that only Damian would know is a warning. Right, yes, but what?
Simon: All right, you have to think of a name or a place that only you and Damian associate with danger.

Lily: Hello? Hello? No. No one there.
Simon: Who do you think it was?
Lily: Oh, one ring means "please phone home." My mom. Tell me what you think.
Simon: All right. "Looking forward to the Cafe Dellarte. I promise the same unforgettable ambience you remember from the Cafe Rigoletto, once upon a time." What's Cafe Rigoletto?
Lily: He'll understand. [Knock at door] He has to. His life depends on it. Okay.
Signora Cordina: You sent for me, Signora?
Lily: Yes, I -- I wanted to apologize for my behavior earlier. I haven't slept much, and I'm just -- I'm really worried about my son.
Signora Cordina: There is no need for apologies. I understand.
Lily: Could you do me a favor? Please?
Signora Cordina: That is what I'm here for.
Lily: Could you please contact Damian for me?
Signora Cordina: I don't know where he is, Signora.
Lily: I need to get him a message. It's important. It's very important. Please, could you find somebody who could get that to him? Please, please?
Signora Cordina: I will do my best.
Lily: I know you will. Thank you. I'll be waiting for a response. I guess now all we have to do is wait.
Simon: No, no, no. Let's move, just in case she comes back with Dante. We're going to the Cafe Dellarte.
    Lily: So this is it?
    Simon: Yeah. This is it.

    The Lakeview Lounge

Lucinda: It's just amazing. It's amazing. Lily knew. She knew. She knew all along. She didn't grieve. She couldn't, you know. She didn't believe. She knew. It's -- oh, God bless her. God bless Lily. God bless little Luke. And God bless Holden, sweet Holden.
Katie: And my sweet husband, who is doing everything in his power to help your family. Don't forget about him.
    Katie: Whoa!
Lucinda: You're a Tuscan treasure. God bless you, too.
    [Lucinda laughing]
Katie: Oh, that reminds me of sweet Guido.
Lucinda: Oh? Sweet Guido? Now, who's that? Is that somebody you met over there on --
Katie: Yes, you can say that.
Lucinda: Where did you say that Lily was, now?
    Katie: Oh, I didn't.
Lucinda: Yes, I think you did. I distinctly recall you saying --
Katie: No, no, no, no. The only thing that I said was that I swore to my husband that I wouldn't breathe a word about where he and Lily are, what they're doing, anything. So -- he would take me to divorce court if he found out that I told you.
Lucinda: Dear, am I supposed to concern myself with your marital difficulties?
Katie: This is not just about my marriage. It's about lives. Lives are at stake. So please don't do anything stupid.
Lucinda: I thought you just said that it was your marriage that was at stake.
Katie: Everything is at stake! Everything. You cannot do anything with the information I just gave you -- anything! Anything at all, ever!

Lily's Room at The Cordina Villa

    Lily: Is anyone watching?
Simon: No one I recognize, anyway.
Lily: This is -- this is gonna work, I know it. Damian will get the message, and he will protect himself. I do. I know it. I can feel Holden and Luke in my arms already.
Lily: You're starting to sound like Katie. An unshakable optimism.
Lily: I guess there are worse things you can be. She's resilient. You have to give her that much.
Simon: Yes. Yes, she is. And she won't take no for an answer. And she'd walk across hot coals for me.
Lily: Well, she's smarter than I thought, I guess. It's amazing for a woman, what she'll do when she finds the love of her life.
Simon: Yeah. Well, and right now, we've gotta go to that cafe to find yours.

    The Lakeview Lounge

Katie: If you tell even one person, you'll be serving them a death warrant.
Lucinda: Who would I tell, darling?
Katie: You own a newspaper! For all I know, it could end up on the front page all across the world tomorrow, and all of their lives will be in jeopardy immediately.
Lucinda: But I wouldn't do that.
Katie: Even under the pain of death?
Lucinda: Darling, I never reveal my sources.
Katie: You have got to swear to me. I know is your daughter, etcetera, over there. But it is also my husband, the only man I have ever loved. If you put his life or mine in danger 'cause you can't keep your mouth shut --
Lucinda: Darling. You go home. You go home now, all right? Before you put your own life in danger. They're all comin' home, and they're all gonna be all right. Comin' home before you can say "bella figura." Okay? So buona notte, ragazza.
    Katie: Buona notte.
    Lucinda: Okay? Okay.
[ Lucinda takes our her cell phone and calls Matthew ]
Lucinda: Matthew? Get the cobwebs out, Matthew. Get my passport. Wake up Eunice. Tell her to pack. Get my pilot. Find him. Have him file the flight plan. This evening. Malta. Yes. Malta. We'll meet at the airport. And tell no one, please. This is a matter of life or death.

  • 08-31-01 ... Bruno Enters the Picture

  • Café Dellarte in Malta

Lily: I'm here to meet Dante -- Dante Grimaldi. This is the Cafe Dellarte, isn't it?
Dante: You defy me and come alone?! You were supposed to bring Damian.
You understand the price you'll pay for this?
Lily: Damian will be here any minute. Your brother, he promised me. And he will show. He would never, never go back on a promise to me.
Dante: Why should I believe your lies?
Lily: Why would I lie to you? You have my husband and my son. [Struggling noise and Dante's men haul Simon into the Café.] Oh, Simon! Oh, Simon, are you okay?! Are you okay?!
Simon: Apart from this growth on my back, I'm fine.
Dante: You have invited a friend?! Oh, well. Signora Snyder, I'm afraid you and your friend made your final mistake.

Simon: Look, I have done nothing but wait outside in plain sight. I haven't got a weapon. Hey, I simply came here for the coffee. I hear it's the best in Malta.
Dante: Do you think I've forgotten what you've done to one of my men?
Simon: He was holding me hostage.
    Dante: Silence! Search him.
Simon: I came here for one reason and one reason only, okay? To make sure Lily was all right. When she came inside to do her business, I sat outside minding -- would you please get that firearm out of my face?
Dante: Enough! Enough from you! I don't have time for this right now.
Simon: Oh. Oh, yeah, that's right. Well, just let me know when you finish killing your own brother, all right?
    Lily: Simon, don't. Please.
Dante: You know, it's too late. It's too late to try to save your insolent friend, Signora. But I had hoped you'd prove yourself by delivering the man you promised.
Lily: Damian will be here. He will. I promise.
Dante: Yeah, but since you did not keep your word, then maybe I'll have to persuade you to tell me the truth about my brother's plan. You know, persuasion --
Lily: I don't know! I don't know! I don't know Damian's plans! I swear, I just spoke to him, just for a few minutes. He said he wanted to talk to me to explain to me why he brought our son to Malta. He begged me to meet him so I could understand. And I told him to meet me here. Look, I set up my own son's father. What else do you want from me?
Dante: I want you to be inspired to greater honesty!
Lily: I'm telling you the truth, Dante.
Dante: Well, perhaps your husband will help you tell it better.
Lily: Holden's here? Holden, he's here? Holden?
Dante: Of course he's here! But neither you or your friend can talk to him. Don't make a sound, okay?
Simon: Go easy, all right? These guys are just dying to use us as target practice.
[ Dante's men drag out Holden, but there is a burlap sack over his head ]
Lily: Oh, it's him. It's Holden. I know it is.

Katie: Wow. Who won the lottery?
    Maitre'd: No one did, ma'am. It's a it's a very impromptu birthday celebration. Mrs. Snyder's sister.
Katie: Oh. These are Rose's friends? Where are they from?
Maitre'd: I wouldn't know, Mrs. Frasier. There was a last minute reservation that was made in the name of -- Mr. Portolano.
[Katie catches the eye of Rose's friend Bruno.]
Katie: Oh. He's Italian. I knew it. Excuse me. I'm going to be in the lounge dining on antipasto if anyone asks.

    The Lakeview Lounge

    Katie: Craig, Bryant. Buona sera!
    Craig: Buona sera, Signora Frasier.
Katie: Oh, Craig, the accent -- perfecto! [Craig laughs] To think you're not even half Italian. Hey, what have we got in this snack mix, beer nuts, peanuts, corn nuts?
Craig: I think it's all nuts, huh?
Katie: Like you, huh? Il pazzo -- loony. Hello. Do you still have that wine list I gave you?
    Bartender: Yeah, it's --
    Katie: Grazie!
Bruno: The Barbaresco is an excellent choice, that is, if you like Italian wine.
Katie: It seems that everything excellent is Italian. At least, that's what my people in Tuscany say. I'll have a glass of this.
Bartender: This one's only served by the bottle, ma'am.
Bruno: We'll take it -- two glasses.
    Katie: Do I know you?
Bruno: I'm the guy that fell in love with you in the other room.
    Katie: Nuts?
    Bruno: Most definitely.
Craig: Looks like your auntie's made a new friend over there.
Bryant: Yeah. Why is she doing that?
Craig: Flirting with Mr. Open Gums?
Bryant: Yeah. To hear Katie tell it, the sun rises and falls on Simon Frasier, so why lead that poor guy on?
    Craig: Mixed signals, Bryant -- a woman's doing, a man's undoing.

Bruno: It's amazing. I never thought I'd come to Illinois and find a girl with an Italian sparkle in her eye. My people are from Palermo.
Katie: Would that make your people and my people neighbors?
Bruno: That makes them simpatico. You can feel it, can't you?
    Katie: I feel so -- so --
    Bruno: Tuscan?
Katie: Tipsy, actually. Are you sure that you don't have to go back into that party?
Bruno: Rose has got friends on all sides. She won't miss a guy she only saw when the casino flew him in to drop a hundred.
Katie: A hundred dollars isn't a lot to gamble, is it?< [Bruno laughs] Oh, you mean $100,000?
    Bruno: I import Italian cars.
Katie: Ah. And you came all the way to Oakdale on a lark?
Bruno: And what a beautiful lark it turned out to be. I was going to invite you back to the party, but I don't think rose would mind if I threw a little party for two.
Katie: Somehow I think that's the best present I could ever give Rose D'Angelo.

    Café Dellarte in Malta

Dante: Do you see our prisoner here? The more lies you tell, the more he'll have to pay.
Holden: Who's there? [Lily gasps] Luke -- Lily, Lily!
    Dante: Hold your fire!
Holden: Lily, what are you doing here? You can't stay here. It's way too dangerous.
Dante: Get her away from the prisoner! Get her away from the prisoner!
Holden: Get your hands off of her!
    Lily: Let me go!
[A struggle ensues and Simon is stabbed.]
Lily: Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
[Simon falls to the floor and as he looks up he recognizes a woman with a scarf on her head sitting at a table.]
    Simon: You --

    The Lakeview Lounge

Katie: They even have these little Italian nuts in here somewhere.
    Bruno: This?
    Katie: Oh, yeah,
    Bruno: It's a pignoli nut.
    Katie: Mm.
    Bruno: Perfect.

Bruno: What is it? Am I making you nervous?
[Katie puts her hands behind her back and tries to remove her wedding ring.]
    Katie: Huh-uh.
Bruno: Then what's the matter? You're not -- you're not married, are you?
