THE
HANDS OF THE PEOPLE
The United States is at war. There is a state of political, legal, and cultural
war between the supporters of the right to bear arms, on one hand, and the supporters
of the eradication of guns from our society on the other hand. The radical right,
whose most visible and most heavily armed component are the “militias”, and the agencies
of the federal government, the ATF (U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms)
and the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), have escalated this war, with dozens
of casualties piled up on both sides, plus a couple of hundred dead bystanders at
Waco and Oklahoma City. The bloodshed at Ruby Ridge and Waco caused by attempts to
enforce earlier gun control laws, and the reaction to the Brady Bill and to the assault
weapon ban were major factors in turning Congress over to the Republicans in 1994.
But still neither side is ready to step back from the brink and think about the consequences
of what they are trying to accomplish.
In all the verbiage from pro and anti-gun
sides and the hollow political posturing there has been no objective investigation
of the roots of the American fascination with firearms, the historical and legal
background that led to current day Americans being the most heavily armed citizenry
in the world, and the effectiveness of governmental control of those arms. The Hands
of the People is designed to show the rich historical background of American firearms,
the citizen soldier, and personal liberty in an interesting, engaging, yet comprehensive
and accurate style. It is a major contribution to the solution of the current dilemma
of gun control versus personal rights. In developing the concept of this book the
author asked the following questions:
What was the militia referred to in
the Second Amendment to the Constitution, how did it develop, and what is the meaning
of the Second Amendment?
Why are Americans the most heavily armed private
citizens in the world and why have we had such a fascination with firearms?
What are the current day “militias” and extremist groups and what is driving their
growth?
How did gun control develop, is it working, and if not, why?
