SOU: How would you describe Jack?
Matt: What he perceives himself to be is what he really is not . . . He sees himself as the perpetual bachelor, like it is the only way to go. [As a bachelor] he can be in charge and give orders, that's like the best thing for him to do. He is really not good at any of those things. That's where Jennifer comes in. Although she is younger than he is, she is probably a lot wiser about life in general . . . Jack is socially retarded.

SOU:How is playing a character who is reluctantly falling in love?
Matt: It's a lot of fun, makes me look at [love]. It makes you really examine all of these things. I think there is a lot of stuff on that we tend not to look at... Love is so many different shades of colorings. It is scary. I think Jack is really scared.

SOU: Why do you think the relationship between Jack and Jennifer has become so popular?
Matt: What it is with Jennifer is that they've (the writers) just allowed this kind of thing to develop to the point that it started playing itself. Even the games that go back and forth between couples. [Fans ask] why do they keep going like this, it's just because they both like to play the game. He likes that manipulation and power play, and all that politics has a sexuality and romance of its own. It's safe, and that's one thing that Jack likes to be. He's been through it before with Kayla and that blew up in his face. And the same thing with Melissa, it got out of hand.

SOU: What do you see as the attraction between Jack and Jennifer?
Matt: I see their relationship as the healthiest thing he has experienced. It is based on two people learning journalism and publishing and how to become better at what you do... But people can turn off the sound and know that there is something going on between these two people, yet when they turn it up they hear them going at each other like cats and dogs.

SOU: How do you like working with Melissa Reeves?
Matt: She wants to try and do a lot of different things and just have fun. A long time ago when we started work together, I dubbed her character 'the last daytime virgin'... Melissa thinks it's funny, too. Jennifer has had so many boyfriends and has been around for so long, most people just figure they missed the show when she lost it. Melissa has a great sense of humor. It's not like we want to make things wacka wacka funny, but people are funny. Life is kind of like a comedy. Here is this older man (Jack) and a younger woman (Jennifer), he should be wiser and stronger, but he is neither. She is the one who is really running it. It is funny.
