Ian Buchanan joins the cast of the Bold and the Beautiful in 1993

Dr. James Warwick came to B&B shrouded in mystery, particularly in regards to his childhood in Scotland. Viewers later discovered his mother had died in childbirth and that her loss was so traumatic for James`father that he mentally abused the young James. Ultimately, the abuse left James unable to have any kind of relationship with a woman until he became reacquainted in Los Angeles with Dr. Taylor Hayes, a star student from his days as a college professor. Ian Buchanan who play James, explains that initially, James was described as a sort of gothic psychiatrist who had been Taylor`s mentor. "I liked playing him because he was very dark and mysterious", Ian says. Gradually, the character started to lighten up a bit.

Though Ian was no stranger to soaps, having starred as Duke Lavery on General Hospital, he`d enjoyed great success in prime time on Twin Peaks and On the Air. He still looked forward to returning to daytime in a regular role. "I love to be exhausted when I go to bed at night and wake up thinking about the character. And I knew the only place I could do that would be on a soap."

After being away from soaps for four years and working in film, which has only one camera, Ian initially found it difficult readjusting to working with several cameras again. When I started on B&B, I remember being more nervous than I had ever been in my life. I was completely frozen. It took me about two weeks to actually conquer it.

Before jonining B&B in 1993, Ian occasionally wondered what it would be like returning to General Hospital, where his character enjoyed a hot storyline with Finola Hughes, who played Anna Scorpio, who he counts as one of his closest friends. "As I got older, I thought it might be interesting to see what Duke was doing when he got older, if he had lived. (Duke was murdered). But now that I`m doing B&B, all those thoughts have completely vanished."
