Roys' Austin-Healey
February 2001
February 09th
Well, once again I have been
relaxing these last couple months and not doing too much work on my Healey.
Working in a tin garage with temperatures outside soaring into the 40's (over
100 Farenheit) is not a good combination. On the nice days I have been doing
small things to keep my hands working on my Healey. I added a double cigarette
lighter for my cell phone but it can be easily removed by a new owner if he/she
wishes to keep "the original look". I measured and cut the carpeting and fine
tuned the dash a bit more.
Another project I am working on is my back lights. I cut
a couple holes to accommodate the extra lights I am installing. Someone
suggested that I not just cut the holes and then simpley install the lights
because the new lights would then actually be pointing up instead of back as the
other lights do. I am in the process of seeing whether I can build and install
some light shrouds without interfering with the natural look of the cars lines.
Using computer enhancements my son-in-law quickly redid a photo to show me what
they would look like and how feasible this option would be. In my opinion it
just can not be made to look naturally part of the vehicle.
Next little bit of work I
did was rebuild the engine mounts. When my Healey rolled the engine mounts were
crushed. I cleaned them, beat them back into shape and coated them with a
protective layer of primer before I proceed to paint them. When I bought my
wreck, the engine was not mounted and was, in fact, in boxes in the back seat. I
can only assume that the engine mounts must be attached to the engine first and
then the engine and gearbox will be lowered into place and then bolted to the
frame.
