Roys' Austin-Healey
The Disassemble
Once I removed the panelling and some paint work I found some of the worst panel repairs I have ever seen in my 40 years as a Panel Beater. The brazing was terrible and, where possible, had to be completely cut out and redone. There were large portions of body work that were completely eaten by rust and so had to be cut away and new sections welded in. Also, a number of the captive nuts on the car had been stripped of thread and things like coach bolts with a slot in the head had been screwed into things like gearbox mountings, exhaust manifold and the front suspension. There were also parts of the car that had been changed, like a different front grill and surround, to make it look like a 3000 Mark II. The 5 wire wheels were all included but were too rusted and damaged to salvage. I almost gave up the restoration when I saw the state of this once fine car but I couldn't bring myself to scrap the car.
