Magic Knight Rayearth was a manga (comic book series) written by CLAMP and published in Japan by Kodansha Ltd. in 1994. It was made into an anime (animation series) consisting of two TV seasons and one Original Video Animation series (i.e a direct-to-video mini-series).
Rayearth is an example of shoujo anime, i.e. anime intended for young girls. However, like Sailor Moon, Rayearth has reached a much wider audience.
About the Writers
Rayearth was written by CLAMP, a team of female manga (comic) artists and writers.
CLAMP is noted for creating shoujo (young girl) manga that are also
appreciated by a wider audience of teen and adult fans.
Other manga by CLAMP include RG Veda, X/1999, Tokyo Babylon, CLAMP School Detective Service, CardCaptor Sakura, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, Wish, and Clover. RG Veda is a fighting-fantasy adventure story, Tokyo Babylon is about a woman with psychic/spiritual powers, and CLAMP School is about three elementary school boys who solve crimes and fight for justice. Card Captor Sakura is a magical girl story and X is an occult fantasy.
As of 1997, the members of CLAMP were:
- Nanase Okawa (scriptwriter)
- Apapa Mokona (main artist)
- Mick Nekoi (assistant)
- Satsuki Igarashi (assistant)
You might have noticed that Mokona is also the name of one of the characters in Rayearth.
