& Teaching Books
The most comprehensive
and academically based complete teaching method for Panpipes comes
from the Romanian born Costel Puscoiu , who is now based in Delft
in the Netherlands where he teaches the instrument. The work
is called "New Method for Panpipes" and is in five parts.
Part 1 caters for an introduction and the basics of learning to
play through to part 5 which details advanced techniques. The
work is based on sound musical theory and is a must for the serious
aspirant amateur or professional Player.
Accompanying each
part of the "New Method" is the five part "Classical
Repertoire for Panpipes" each part of which contains pieces
the difficulty of which reflects the stage of instruction in the
corresponding volume of the "New Method". Also available
is a series of practice studies called "The Art of Rhythm"
Another excellent
instructional work , recently translated into English , is the
beginner's book by the great German Panflute virtuoso Ulrich Herkenhoff.
This is also a step by step guide to learning to play and is highly
recommended to those contemplating taking up the panflute.
The original "definitive"
panpipes teaching book was written by the famous Gheorghe Zamfir
in the 1970s. The work is only available in the French language
but is penned by the world's most famous panpipes player.
Also available from
Costel Puscoiu are the four volumes of "Recital Pieces for
Panflute" which contain sheet music (solo and accompaniment)
for a number of pieces from the straight forward to the very demanding.
Such classical works as Mozart's "Rondo Alla Turca"
and Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 feature.
Costel Puscoiu
also has available sheet music for Romanian Folk music as in the following
volumes.
The following work
is written in the key of C major as opposed to the traditional
G major of the Romanian panpipes.
