1)Ahead of time, make individual dough pizza crusts and freeze.
When ready to make the pizzas, gather any sauce, cheeses and
toppings you would like. Let the children create their own
pizza for lunch. Cook until cheese is golden brown and crust
isn't doughy.
2)Ahead of time, make large pizza crusts and freeze; one per
family in your care. Have the children create their own
families pizza using sauce, cheese and toppings. Wrap in
plastic and place in the freezer. When each family arrives
at pick-up time, surprise them with the night's supper. I
like to do this twice a year as a gift to the families. I
do warn them ahead of time not to prepare supper for that night,
but a surprise is fun too. You give the family a great, fun
meal and encourage "family dining" as well.
3) Save a pizza cardboard from your next pizza. Clean if
needed.
Apply glue to it and wrap brown felt to cover it. Cut
various "toppings" shapes from other colors of felt. The
kids will enjoy making pizzas in their pretend kitchen or
restaurant. Save a delivery box as well and other props that
are appropriate to create a pizza parlor.
3b) instead of using felt pieces, use the craft foam sheets
found at WalMart or any craft store. Put the shredded yellow
cheese in a used Kraft Mozzerella bag, etc...
4)Talk about the letter P for Pizza. What other "P" words
can go on a pizza? (pepperoni, pineapple, pickles, etc...)
What are some other "P" words that would be silly on a Pizza?
(plums, pears, pants, porcupines, pine trees, pigs, prunes,
pine cones, people, purse, etc....)
6) Talk about where the pizza ingredients come from.
Show them each if possible. Crust - flour from a farmer's
field; Sauce - from tomatoes in a garden; Cheese -
from milk from a cow; Mushrooms - garden; Pepperoni -
meat (not sure exactly from what! Look on the package)
Pineapple - fruit from a tree in maybe Hawaii; Ham or
Canadian Bacon - meat from a pig; Sausage - meat from a
pig or cow; Peppers - vegetable from the garden; etc.......
7) From Lynn in MN
In a magazine (not sure which one!) The childcare provider made
a "pizza garden" She had the kids help her make a circle
garden. Then put borders in to form a "pie shape".
In each "pie" her and the kids planted oregeno, tomatoes,
onions, peppers, etc.
