MOVIES THAT CENTER AROUND THE PORTRAYAL OF LADY CAROLINE LAMB:
- Lady Caroline Lamb:
Starring Sarah Miles as Lady Caroline Lamb and
Richard Chamberlain as Lord Byron. This 1972 movie's plot revolves around Caroline's affair
with Lord Byron that started in 1812. As a movie, I have to say it's not the best one made, but
for Caroline/Byron buffs as myself, I found the movie fascinating to see how
the director portrays each character. This movie is given 2 stars by
Video Movie Guide 1998, which was written by Mick Martin and Marsha Porter.
MOVIES THAT CENTER AROUND THE PORTRAYAL OF LORD BYRON:
- Gothic:
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Lord
Byron, Julian Sands as Percy Shelley, and Natasha Richardson as Mary Shelley.
Music by (surprisingly enough) Thomas Dolby! Made in 1987, the movie's plot is about the summer in 1816 at Byron's
Geneva estate where Mary Shelley writes "Frankenstein" and Byron's doctor
Polidori writes "Vampyre." This movie is very dark, bizarre, grotesque, and erotic, but keeps
true to the eccentricness that characterized Byron's personality. Again, the movie guide gave this movie 2 stars.
- Haunted Summer:
Filmed in 1988, this movie
stars Phillip Anglim as Byron, Alice Krige as Mary Shelley, Eric Stoltz as
Percy Shelley, Alex Winter (a.k.a. Bill in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure) as
Dr. Polidori, and Laura Dern as Claire Claremont. This movie is also about the summer of 1816, but is far
less bizarre than "Gothic." On the contrary, it is more beautiful, poetic, and romantic. This movie also received
2 stars.
- Bad Lord Byron:
Bad Lord Byron stars
Dennis Price as Byron, Mai Zetterling as Teresa Guiccioli, Joan Greenwood as Caroline,
Linden Travers as Augusta Leigh, Sonia Holmas as Annabella Milbanke, Raymond Lovell as
Hobhouse, and Irene Browne as Lady Melboure. The movie centers around a mock trial of
Byron's life. The judgement is to see whether Byron was really a bad person as the movie's title
signifies or whether he was just misunderstood. The women in Byron's life present most of the testimonials...
which is dangerous for Lord Byron, I must say! The movie was made in 1949 and is also fun to watch
to see historical portrayals. This movie was not listed in my movie guide book, but I predict that it, too, would've
received 2 stars.
