| Participants Melinda Manore, R.D., Ph.D., FACSM -Teaches both graduate and undergraduate nutrition courses at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. She is also the Nutrition Column editor for ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal and is completing a book titled Sport Nutrition for Performance and Health. She is also a member of USA Gymnastics National Health Advisory Board. Dr. Manore is particularly interested in women's health issues and disordered eating.Aurelia Nattiv, M.D. -An assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery at UCLA. She also serves as team physician for the UCLA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. She is director of the UCLA Osteoporosis Center. She has written numerous articles and has been recognized nationally for her work and research on the female athlete, especially with regard to medical problems that have impact on bone health in the female athlete. Ron O'Brien, Ph.D. -The most successful diving coach in U.S. history. Eight-time Olympic coach whose divers have won 12 Olympic medals. Medal-winning athletes include Greg Louganis, Mary Ellen Clark, and Jennifer Chandler. Currently serving as USA Diving's technical director. Lynne Rolley - USA Tennis director of programs. A former Top Ten player, and assistant U.S. Federation Cup coach. In her current position, Rolley has worked with many top players including Jennifer Capriati, Lindsey Davenport, Mary Joe Fernandez, Lisa Raymond, Meredith McGrath, and Chanda Rubin. Ben Smith -Head coach of the gold medal-winning 1998 USA Women's Ice Hockey Team. Guided USA Hockey's women's national teams to medal-winning performances in the Three Nations Cup, the Friendship Cup, and the IHF Women's World Championship. Head coach for the Women's Ice Hockey Team for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Steve Varechok, L.C.S. W ., C.S.C.S. -A licensed clinical social worker and certified strength and conditioning specialist, and a 12-year veteran in private practice. He specializes in providing psychotherapy services and in developing physical conditioning programs for clients with eating disorders. Mr. Varechok has been the strength and conditioning coach for Division I collegiate gymnastics programs and for other female athletes. Deanne Vochatzer -Head coach, 1996 Olympic Women's Track Team. A former world-class hurdler, Deanne is currently the women's head coach at the University of California at Davis, a perennial track powerhouse. Audrius Barzdukas -Associate Director, USOC Coaching Division. Former director of Team Services of USA Swimming. Evidence The consensus statement was derived from published research and a literature search on the Female Athlete Triad, as well as the clinical and coaching experience of panel members. Consensus Process The panel, working in a structured discussion format, developed their conclusions based on scientific evidence enhanced by shared experience. The statement was discussed in a symposium, and feedback was given to panelists. The statement was circulated to panel members for review, comment, and final revisions. |
