The Fourth Block: FLOW AND STYLE

Flow is the final outcome of the perfect balance line of the body to the skate in the springboard of the circles, turns, and tracing. In other words, your body balance again and also knowing exactly what part of the skate you are skating on. (Some teachers explain this by saying “Middle Front or Middle Back”). It is important for students to know where their weight is, for instance, on change of edges. Many times on forward change of edges, buckling will cause the weight to shift to the ball of the foot, thereby causing friction and losing flow. Another thing that increases flow is how on moves through space. Just the mere fact of extending your leg and bringing your leg in, in a figure, creates flow. The continuous movement in the free leg is a real factor in the flow of he figure. Now, style is one of the most difficult words to define. I will define it like this: “It is the fine line of exquisite presentation that skaters have that is simply an outgrowth of their technique.” If they are competent in the technique of their skating, they have learned their positions properly and where to do them, then they will learn to execute them with a certain or a real competence and know–how.
