The Background of Shogi

As for presenting this page, I decided that it would be very similar to FAQ pages and therefore have a Q&A type of presentation mode. Please Enjoy!

 Q: When was Shogi invented?

A: The traces of shogi go up to the 13th century (as there is written proof about this) though some people claim that it was started in the 6th century (though there is no written proof about this).

Q: What does it originate from?

A:The origin of Shogi probably came from an Indian game called ashtapada. The first form of ashtapada is said to have been a game with four players , but the latest studies show that the ashtapada was played by two players as a wargame. Some people mantain though that Shogi derived from Chaturanga.
Ashtapada's board has 8x8 sqares. The reason that this number is used is that the Indians had a king and minister that went together in the center of the board while the other pieces would be placed symmetrically therefore making an even number unlike the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean chess that only had 1 king and therefore to put the king in the center and the other pieces symmetrically they needed an odd number .

Q: What is Chaturanga?

A: Chaturanga, is a word that means "four limbs" that probably refers to the four branches of the Indian army elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers. This means that chess is at least 2,000 years old. The exact age cannot be determined because the game was originally played with dice, and references to "skilled dice players", as far back as 5,000 years ago, may or may not be in reference to an early form of chess.

Q:Why was Shogi invented?

A: It is said that Shogi was actually invented to exercise the mind of generals, and was originally used for examples of a real battle.
