X-Reference Naming Format

Within our office, I will be proposing the following changes:

  • The sheet titled "X-{bldg no}-{floor no}.DWG", once xref'd, will be renamed "X-PLAN.DWG" from the XREF Manager dialogue box.
  • The sheet titled "XA-{bldg no}-{floor no}.DWG", once xref'd, will be renamed "XA-PLAN.DWG" from the XREF Manager dialogue box.
  • The sheet titled "XM-{bldg no}-{floor no}.DWG", once xref'd, will be renamed "XM-PLAN.DWG" from the XREF Manager dialogue box.
  • The sheet titled "XP-{bldg no}-{floor no}.DWG", once xref'd, will be renamed "XP-PLAN.DWG" from the XREF Manager dialogue box.
  • The sheet titled "XE-{bldg no}-{floor no}.DWG", once xref'd, will be renamed "XE-PLAN.DWG" from the XREF Manager dialogue box.

The purpose of this change is to allow for the utilization of the feature called Saved Layer States.

The Saved Layer States feature allows users to store the specific layer settings for a given viewport, i.e. the "Demo" viewport, for use in a later drawing or project. It will save the user the time and effort of having to select which layers get frozen within a given viewport type.

Absent the use of a naming format such as the one proposed, this feature can not be implemented. In our current XReference Naming format, each project is given a unique set of drawing names, and consequently, a host drawing contains layer names unique to that particular project. Therein lies the problem.

By renaming each Xref within the XREF Manager Dialogue Box, NOT within Windows Explorer, we can create layer name lists that are consistent from drawing to drawing, from project to project.

The Saved Layer States feature would, then, become useful.
